Russia has never had the strongest or the best army. The occupation of states by Russia was not determined by armed force, but by the ability of agents and spies to disassemble, destabilize and corrupt the political elite of countries. This is happening in Europe right now. Putin invested a lot of money to gain influence in the media and at various levels of power in opinion-forming and non-governmental organizations, such as environmental ones. In Poland, we also have the fifth column. How to recognize it? It's easy . It is enough to check who has been pursuing the Kremlin's goals in recent years. I respect this but for speaking out, but apart from his own safety (and that of his family), maybe his wealth as well, he doesn't have any bigger responsibility to anyone, no public or countrywide threat from Russia will come from his words, but this would happen if a leader says the wrong thing, anyway it's actions not words that are needed, that's what I judge Western leaders on.

The characterization of Putin tallies much with his rise to power. KGB training, obedience, execution of order first questions later and of course secrecy. But most important of all is Loyalty. His loyalty to the Mayor, who helped him, his loyalty to Yeltsin, who knighted him irrespective of their character _ corrupt, drunkard or not! What really counts in any Mafia gang is really the utter dedication to the Patriarch rather than to an idea or an ideology. This whole inner circle is based on that kind of ethos and that is why, despite a better judgement, the taboo associated with disloyalty makes one even accept personal death or the annihilation of the world as a better choice. It has something sacred associated with it. And if you grow up within such a community, you tend to project it as the reality about the world. You distrust and generally disrespect people, who profess humanism or other ideologies and the only thing you believe in and respect as the member of the mafia tribe is the Power and the Whip.

@@alexsartre2453 Western democracies allow voices like Mearsheimer or Noam Chomsky. They are all well regarded intellectuals in their fields globally as well as in the west. The difference lies in the fact that anti-government voices, political or non- political, in Russia is suppresed by the kremlin. Most of the times that suppression is violent. That's a clear difference there. Mearsheimer's coined his views to be "offensive realism". If you apply this to the ex- Warsaw Pact countries, it actually justifies the will & need of these smaller, sovereign states to look for security by joining NATO currently, against the ever present existential threat of kremlin. However Mearsheimer vehemently criticises NATO's eastward expansion. That's a contradiction IMO.

He is not going to concede on those bare minimum demands. Of course Ukraine should not have to, but its a pick between two evils. I really dont want to see Putin rewarded for this, but I cant believe he will back off from those demands. Waging war for years would cripple both Russia and Ukraine, countless lives will be lost. it is unbelievable that people in the West don't seem to grasp that such widespread sanctions on Russia will boomerang and effect everybody... some European countries are just hoping (eg. Germany, Belgium) that the consequences of the sanctions and any counter sanctions from Russia (see Russia's rubles for had from enemy nations) are less severe on them then on Russia... just check the standard of living metric in the UK --> it is the worst in almost 70 years and it is going to get worse moreover, Russia wants to decouple from the West... the world is realigning with Russia moving more into Eurasia with its partnership with China and trade deals with China, India, Pakistan, Iran etc... Asia had 7 times the population of Europe... as long as Russia can withstand the short term impact of the sanctions, it will prosper long term because it is a commodities superpower interviews like this with Khodorkovsky are just distractions --> Putin is evil, WMDs, prolong the war in Ukraine etc. instead of discussing the full ramifications of the war, sanctions, Russia's Asian ambitions, the economies of Western Europe, the energy shortfalls that are coming for Europe, the China-Russia alliance that will be far more potent than the Warsaw Pact etc.
