This is not only uncharted ground for the Syrians. It is a huge light of hope for all other countries that have been under decades of brutal dictatorship. The most striking example being North Korea - the population of which is probably kept in complete oblivion of the events in Syria, like anywhere else. But there is Iran, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Belarus, Myanmar, Turkmenistan, several African states, etc. The turnover in Syria is most definitely being followed closely by both leaders and opposition in these countries.

Until Pootin is expelled from occupying other sovereign lands, he is not a loser. Losing men, money, and equipment does not matter to him; they are all expendable assets. Land acquisition, spheres of influence, and mass control of the populous are what matter the most to him. Pootin is older, and Assad is much younger. If I were Assad, I wouldn't get too comfortable; once Pootin is gone, his days of sanctuary will be numbered. No one likes hangers-on, especially when they (oligarchs) believe you are bleeding them of wealth. A window looms no doubt?

The Russians are definately pulling out of Syria. There are vids of a convoy heading towards Tartus possibly hundreds of Russian vehicles long, with locals shouting out what sounds like "Putins dogs" and waving the soles of their shoes at the convoy (check out the meaning of this in this part of the world). :)

I erased my earlier comment because I wanted to preface it with some background and make a point less emphatically. Preface: I want to see Syria achieve freedom and prosperity. While liberal democracy and capitalism are particularly unpopular, I can't find something superior. Main point: I think it is likely that Syria will trust Turkey more than any other country. NATO should help rebuild the Syrian army with Turkey taking a leadership role. Turkey has had an imperfect achievement of civilian control over the military, but countries that have achieved this are less prone to return to dictatorship. Finally, countries like the USA and the UK can point to the fact that most of our citizens are content with democracy and that we believe this has been the basis for our prosperity. I can't blame them for being a little skeptical that the 'Coalition of the Willing' is willing to help them. The Ba'ath party has fallen forever.

I laughed very loudly when he said that Kurds of the region are _extremely_ secular, and they are the most incredibly democratic actors in the region. 1- Single party autocracy is not democracy. We couldn't explain this to Germans for some reason. 2- If you wanna learn how secular some Kurds are, look up Konca Kuris, Turkish feminist author who was kidnapped by the Kurdish Hezbollah, tortured for 40 days and brutally killed. Kurds of the region, before everything, they are known for honor killings. Good thing that they are now modernizing themselves, thanks to their diaspora in Europe. But in a real democracy, without the western support, Kurdistan, too would find their own Erdogan, don't worry about it.
