“With Storm Shadow and other missiles Ukraine can start to change the picture for Russian forces inside Crimea.”
Ukraine could capture or isolate the whole of Crimea as it has “really degraded” the area by cutting off the Kerch bridge, says former US ambassador Kurt Volker.

That's the only long term solution for Ukraine's security. NATO has been very successful for keeping peace within and for its member states. The alliance is far too big and powerful for any aggressor to poke the dragon when all are bound by the treaty to join the conflict if an aggressor makes war on any single member state.

The Ukrainian armed forces have demonstrated that they are currently NOT capable of capturing an area as large as Crimea. Even reaching the Crimea would be a very difficult task because there are too many trench systems and natural obstacles in the way. The only way they could seize such a large territory is if there were a massive collapse of the Russian army, and/or a revolution in Russia. Neither of these things seems likely at the present time.

Volker says something at the beginning that is crucial for everyone to understand. Ukraine isn't fighting for romantic reasons. It's not fighting because they want to keep their flag. They are fighting so that future Ukrainians do NOT have to fight and they can concentrate instead on building a prosperous and thriving independent nation that doesn't have to concern itself with invasion every few years. They are fighting for PRAGMATIC reasons, not hypothetical reasons. For this reason, the whole of Ukraine including the Crimea needs to be returned to its pre-annexation disposition. Given Kiev the weapons and they will win. Russians will leave Ukraine and Ukraine will leave Russia. The war will end. Putin will be out or otherwise totally rendered to the margins, and we can have something like peace.

@davidfulton179 No, the Kiev government is fighting for rabid anti-Russian nationalism based on ridiculously twisted history. For more than a decade as Russia recovered from the 90s the Ukraine recovered with it. In fact, the Russian Federation supported the Ukrainian government with cheap gas, fees for transport for gas to Europe, easy entry into the RF for Ukrainian workers, contracts for heavy industries in the Ukraine, and financial support. And the Ukrainians still stole gas and didn't what they owed to Russia. Nevertheless as the RF recovered so did the Ukraine. However, a certain faction of Ukrainian ultranationalists, supported by the west, couldn't stand the ties with Russia, couldn't stand respecting the rights of Russian speakers and those who identify as ethnic Russians (45% and 17% of the population respectively) and started destroying just Russian/Ukrainian heritage even before 2014. They then fomented, with US and EU support, the Majdan coup. And contrary to popular believe, entry into the EU isn't a key to prosperity. Some Eastern Europe countries like Estonia have been relatively successful, countries like Latvia and Lithuania have lost population...including some of their 'best and brightest' to emigration to western europe, while others like Romania and Bulgaria remain the basketcases they have been for nearly two centuries. Russia could have helped with that.

Pummelled to nothing maybe, but no sign whatsoever of Crimea being recaptured.

If Russia is forced to evacuate, what stops them? The Donbas has a long contiguous border with many supply routes. Crimea is being isolated and untenable.
@richardredmond1463
@richardredmond1463 2 сағат бұрын
@@donaldclifford5763 Why would Russia suddenly be forced to evacuate? Ukraine has tried for two years to properly cross the Dnieper and have failed. They would have to take all that land of Kherson back first, then take Crimea from the land side since they have no navy. There is no sign of that happening unfortunately.
