I use Telegram often and wish all my family transitioned fully. Telegram is just like Discord, but better (depends on what you do) but discord is really good for calls which Telegram is catching up

Signal (the app) stores less afaik, but I don't think it has the same features as for "hiding phone numbers" and such. Think right now having both is the way to go.

Signal only requires you to have a phone number to create an account. After that you don't need it anymore. Signal lacks the near discover features and some more niche unique to telegram things. Signal is basically a de-facebooked whatsapp featureset wise. Also you're correct they store less. IIRC the US gov asked signal for user data on someone and they complied with all the data they had on that user which was the account creation date. (Mental outlaw made a good video on this)

Key thing here is that the founder of Telegram owns the private keys and at any time can change his mind and sell/give them. They can also be stolen. This thing cannot happen with Signal because no one owns the private keys except from the users. Use Signal. Maybe this video is a sponsored one but when we talk about privacy, Signal is the way to go.

Telegram is a great messenger. There's a lot of cool features, like fully customizable UI colors; stickers (animated and video stickers included) that you can easily make yourself; actually safe and private, video messages; ability to transfer files (almost all types of files) up to 2GB; there are channels, groups, awesome bots, and lots of useful shit.

Photos with dog and middle finger have nothing to do with Ukraine. In first case Pavel told that government wanted him to ban page of Alexey Navalniy and he refused. If I remember correctly middle finger was for the company that wanted to buy vk, I think it was Sberbank or Gazprom but I may remember things wrong. Also development of Telegram has began before he fled Russia, I think it was in 2012 and by 2014 one third of vk team was working on Telegram.

I sympathize with you and the Ukrainians, at the same time I have researched about the Ukraine-Russia geo-political situation at hand, and I kind of get what both sides want. The downside of Russia is that they have chosen war as their tactics. Just to be clear, war is not justified, but there are double-standards when we see the Western nations (USA specifically) does the same in countries like Yemen (which is happening at the moment and far worse), Afghanistan, Lybia, DRC and it doesn't get the same coverage since it won't serve their interest. Whether we want to admit it or not, the West has benefited from wars and ravaging countries in Africa and the Middle East. There are two sides of the coin.

I just dont understand why end-to-end encryption is optional in the app, by default you have an encrypted connection to the servers, but on server side they can see the content of your messages. The app is open source which is good, but what happens with the data on server side is still a out of your hands.

E2E would be great but it's very restricting. You cannot have cloud sync with E2E, which is one of Telegram's greatest features.

Please don't call Telegram encrypted, without explaining that chats aren't end-to-end encrypted by default. This is the biggest thing that gets Telegram in trouble with the "media". Anti-telegram infosec individuals are very vocal that Telegram "claims to be encrypted" but "it's not E2EE by default". They whine about this under headlines like "Telegram isn't Private, don't use it". This severely hurts adoption. Let's not give them any ammo to state that people are using Telegram cloud chats under the impression that they're E2EE.

I love Durov. He is a good person, strong and moral. Good character. I also like Putin. They have two different opinions on how things should be run. I will say that while Putin is a strong, reliable leader, he cannot comprehend the digital age. One, he refuses to engage in it, only having a computer but has never sent an email. Two, and I hate to put it this way, but he didn't grow up with the internet culture and is simply afraid of it. Just like he sounds "special" when he speaks English, no hate from me because I butcher Russian, Putin should not make too many comments about the internet.
