Video is pretty OK, title is stupid, but one thing that always irks me (and is pretty unimportant), is calling the Defence Forces Cemetary (where Bronze solider was relocated to) an "outskirt of Tallinn". This term is almost always used in English media. Like seriously, it is in the city center district. Roughly 2km from its previous location. It was indeed relocated from its extremely prominent position in the extreme heart of Tallinn to a more peaceful location, but it wasn´t hidden away in some deep dark forest.

Pretty sure the 2007 Bronze soldier riots would have seen a follow-up, as in Georgia and Ukraine, had Estonia not been member of NATO already. The doctored image of 'demolished' Bronze soldier is just a piece. Russia sent actors and TV crew over, to film their deep grievance near the Bronze soldier. While local news showed same men in merry conversation and laughing few moments prior. Naši, Putin's youth organization, was sent over stand honor guard by it in Soviet uniforms. Naši also blocked (and briefly broke into) Estonia's embassy in Moscow for several days, something the hosting country is obliged to protect against, while Kremlin blatantly refused to take any action. Russian diplomats meeting with riot organizers prior to the event. Stories of Russians being discriminated were also ever present, but this had been case since breakup of Soviet Union. And initially west bought into as it still believed Russia being on path to a normal state. This was when Bush Jr. looked into Putin's eyes and 'peered into his soul'

@@ThriveTalesTV That is an often repeated lie by Kremlin trolls. Yes Russia invested some, in industries that it needed, but it took much more than it gave. There are publicly accessible bank records in Riga, left behind by the occupying force. A Latvian historian went though the records for Latvia, search KZbin for Keep permanently. Between 1949-1990, 40,6 billion rubes moved from Latvia to USSR Central Bank, 24,7 billion to other direction. This is not counting maintaining the occupying force and exports of industrial - agricultural products. But more importantly, much more was NOT built because of the occupation. GPD per capita, Estonia was slightly wealthier than Finland before occupation. After occupation, Finland was 12 times wealthier. Since regaining independence(and losing all the Russian "investments"), Estonia's GPD per capita is 2x that of Russia 23,312 vs 10,126 (aka hasn't built anything for you smoothbrains). Manufacturing value added per capita Estonia 2,59k vs Russia 1,22k . Before going with next lie about living on EU subsidies, same ratio of 2x times higher GPD per capita, was before joining EU in 2004. This is with Estonia having very little natural resources, vs Russia's massive natural resources. Just selling oil and gas provides 20% of its GPD and government budget

While I understand that native Estonians were not so happy about the Russian minority that moved in during USSR during the occupation, I still think the integration work could have started earlier on after independence, making them feel at home and accepted as Estonians. Good to see that happening now and when I speak with younger people of Russian descent it seems almost all can speak both languages (at least in Tallinn) and probably just focus on the same things as other young people. Work, study, explore other countries etc. But I think that integration should also allow everyone to exercise their culture and language.
@markust60392 жыл бұрын
Agree, but there was (still is a bit) a lot of misstrust between the communities because of obious reasons (many Russians would still see Estonia part of Russia and Estonians caary hate from the past) and people lived in parallel worlds, many still do. The new generation, both Estonian and Russian, is with a new mindset and speak 2-4 languages so I think only time will help (with more intensive investments to integration). First 15 years of independence went towards rebuilding the country and only in the last 15 years has the country had the time to deal with "less pressing" issues.

@@markust6039 Yes especially the 90s were chaotic in Estonia as well. I remember coming with the ferry to Tallinn and was greeted with (homeless) children begging for money. @@Chris-pf8by That’s how collapse looks like. Now it’s coming to the west. It will happen. It’s just a matter of time. The USSR system collapsed and the people were left to fend for themselves. It will be the same here in the west but maybe worse because people here are more spoiled.
@wolfswinkel89062 жыл бұрын
@@Chris-pf8by if you're Estonian, do you believe Russia has the desire to subjugate Estonia by force like in 1940, or relate on more civil terms as Belarus and Kazakhstan in recent times? The Estonian model of ethnic Russian integration seems a lot more civilized and constructive than the Ukrainian model (banning the language and denying them of basic amenities) so I find it hard to believe Russia will feel the compulsion to liberate its population there like in Donbass.
@mihkelmatsina14312 жыл бұрын
i agree that the ideal reality would be integrating russians, however the majority of them dont want it. they seclude themselves off from estonians and refuse to learn the language. and extreme example is when in 1991 the goverment here was giving free citizenship to all russians living here, but a good few of them thought that the republic was bound to be short lived and the russian army would soon arrive once more. they later had to go through a much more tedious process to get citizenship.

I can't believe the Estonians don't want to glorify their occupiers . There are still an awful lot of Estonians whose parents or grandparents were murdered at home or in Siberia. It caused intergenerational trauma It was by design that Russian speakers were encouraged to settle in the occupied countries . If there's no assimilation they're more likely to support the Red Empire and believe Putin's propoganda . (like the amazing Sputnik shot , and Covid is a western fabrication ). It's a big factor in how he orchestrated Crimea .
