Exactly, not all the hyperbole please and retired generals that circlejerk around the amazing Ukraine army and tremendous losses of Russia. If Russia wants, despite tremendous losses, they could carpetbomb Ukraine. (my opinion is that Ukraine Army is great indeed, but I think there might be too much hopium in western media). The perspective of this panel was great and reflects what people actually feel about this war. My wife is Polish and she has a, perhaps irrational, fear of Russia which is inflated now to great heights where she is not sure Russia will stop at the Ukraine border.

Eastern Europeans were under occupation multiple times and betrayed/ abandoned in WW2. And words don't cost anything nor mean much. We want actions and gear. We need an united EU military 105% ready and use NATO (mainly the US) only as a backup/ nuclear deterrent. It would take weeks for the US to mobilize and it's better to stop the enemy at the border than to let them roll over Europe and then try to push them back. Involved countries would be destroyed 2 times instead of 1 (or preferably 0 times).

I think the NATO countries that were once part of the USSR are safe but Moldova and the other former USSR nations that are not NATO members may be absorbed by Russia. Another factor that might change Putin's view of confronting NATO is the dismal performance of the Russian military in Ukraine, plus how long they are bogged down there. My understanding is that 100 of the 150 active military units that Russia has are in Ukraine and the other 50 are needed to guard other borders, so there are no reserves available. If the Russians are tied down in Ukraine for an extended period of time, either in a war or as an army of occupation protecting the Russian puppet leader installed by Putin, they certainly will not be in a position to threaten NATO countries. The other factor is the sanctions and the impact on the Russian economy. Russia is losing lots of equipment in Ukraine and it will be expensive to replace, assuming they can afford to replace it in the first place.

He's so weak. His entire base of support is being attacked. He has to go insane or get eliminated. As any human in threat of elimination would do in his situation...he will go the aggressive route. But the performance of his military is humiliatingly. It proves he has bad information and a corrupt system of managing his military. He looks extremely vulnerable at the moment. The powers that be may want to take advantage of this weakness.

I understand that given his recent action in the Ukraine it might appear as though Putin has completely lost his mind, but I assure you he is a thinking man and he is well aware that his Army is a complete failure and he knows that if he cannot invade Ukraine successfully that he stands zero chance of “marching all the way to the Baltic”. I understand that our Polish and Baltic states brothers and sisters are nervous right now, but I truly believe this will pass without spilling over beyond Ukraine…I deeply hope I’m correct.

I would not worry too much about Russia attacking a NATO member state even if they are helping Ukraine. Once that happens NATO including the 800 gorilla (US Military) would hand the Russians the worst defeat since WWI. If it's one thing us Americans know how to do is built, overpay for, and use weapons to take apart a modern military. Now I say all of this from the safety of being very far away in the US. I do pray for all of Ukraine and the rest of Europe for this madness to end soon.

I'm watching DW a lot these days - enjoy the perspective. I have friends in Germany and a German family member. I think of Ukraine first thing when I get up, and last thing at night, every time I take a bite of food, or drink water, or come in from the cold. On the jets, I'm hearing that Poland did not contact relevant USA officials before releasing news. Gen. Wes Clark, whose opinion I trust, has said this was basically bungled all around, should have been kept quiet from the beginning - said that had this not blown up in the news, there simply would have been more Ukrainian jets showing up in the skies. I want Ukraine to get the jets, but now? Who knows. Put "em on trucks and roll 'em across? Uff!

As a German let me tell you it was rather a good opportunity for the ultra nationalistic polish Government to blame Germany once again. Old polish Folklore. It was a political trap for Germany and surprisingly the US to beat the domestic nationalistic drum. The minute it was announced the polish PIS party associated social media accounts had their argumentation online, while nobody in Berlin or Washington knew. They put the Migs into the German basket of Rammstein Air Base without even asking Germany. They knew nothing would happen, yet they still can sell it as "look we demand the hard way". If they had balls they could to it from Poland.

Everyone is claping Poland in the back but noone is willing to do something themselves. Sure you can throw military and medial aid via Poland and feel good for yourself, but Poland cannot do everything themselves, mig29 move from Poland was smart. It is forcing others to realize that easy effort of "i send you some arms and change my photo on facebook" help is not a way to go and everyone needs to do something themselves... USA/UK/NATO have given lots of weapons and training and intel... and poss things we dont even know about. if you mean active conflict, then I disagree.... putin needs the option to backdown from here... if he pushes into nato, then he'll get a war with nato.. with the potential to esculate into a nuc conflict. Otherwise nato shouldn't push to fill the gap between nato and russia by entering this conflict. theyre trying to reduce civilian deaths and suffering.. getting directly involved if nato can avoid it would just increase them.

THe current military situation on Earth is like a scaled up version of the situation in Medieval times. Local Barons held the power and the suffering of ordinary people was great. Then the planet went to nation states where large scale military force became the norm and each nation state held a monopoly on physical force and the power of life and death of its people. Now because of the planetary scale of nuclear weapons it is now time to take control of all weapons of mass destruction, Nuclear, Chemical and Biological into a sort of world government hands. This will be extremely difficult to accomplish but its need is clearly outlined by the planet scale mexican stand-off we face now. The Ukrainian people are now a sacrifice on the altar of avoiding nuclear exchange and the rest of the world are powerless to resist Russian aggression unless they risk nuclear annihilation.
