“It’s a part of Russian pressure. It's saying, here we are and we're capable of doing this. Beware. Take us seriously.”
UK officials should have “greater protection within the vicinity of Russia” warns Sir Michael Graydon after Russia reportedly jammed the satellite signal on an RAF aircraft carrying the UK defence secretary back from Poland.

It's just a simple RF jammer they have used. It's basically an amplified, low power, directed RF transmitter on a band of about 1550MHz. The more power that is used, the greater the range. Unfortuately, there is no way of effacing the jam without losing the GPS signal itself. So it's self defeating. A self plotting arangement would solve this problem, where the SA window/viewer on most military jets still tracks aircraft location based on last known location and the aircrafts speed, Bearing, Range & Altitude... even if GPS goes down. All this data comes from the aircrafts on-board sensors. This, at the end of the day, is nothing to be worried about as most commercial/private aircraft have tripple redunancy when it comes to location and situational awareness. A directed EMP weapon, whilst requring huge ammounts of energy, IS the thing to be worried about, literally bringing an aircraft to it's knees, as ALL aircraft these days use electronic Fly-By-Wire, Electronic launch systems, etc.

Wrong. There are properly equipped aircraft that can deal with this stuff. Ever heard of anti radiation, as in microwaves, missiles? Ukraine has been using them to great effect in destroying Russias anti-aircraft capability.

the plane "experienced GPS jamming when they flew close to Kaliningrad. It didn't threaten the safety of the aircraft and it is not unusual for aircraft to experience GPS jamming near Kaliningrad, which is of course Russian territory." confirmed by Downing St spokesperson. Russia's use of GPS interference across Poland and the Baltic has proliferated in recent months. The aim may be to disrupt Nato military exercises but it is also interfering with commercial shipping and aircraft. Ships and aircraft have other means of navigation but the institute warned such jamming could have dangerous consequences.

Its a bit of a wakeup call for the forces of NATO given how many of them rely on GPS to navigate and target their weapons. I think NATO just got a taste of what Russia was talking about a couple of years ago when they were warned about the advanced Russian weapons. I can now imagine the Ukrainian F-16 pilots having to navigate around the war zone using the road signs because his nav computer doesnt work against Russia.

Frankly, it’s no big thing.. Most aircraft can also use the Russians Glonas system, The EUs Galileo system or the Chinese BeiDou system for position fixes..as well as various the systems..GPS is the best known in the West, but it’s not the only one..
