Putting a Carli Suspension Pintop 2.5 System on Our Power Wagon

Power Wagons are capable, but there's still lots of room for improvement! We took our stock RAM Power Wagon to a whole new level with a ‪@thecarlisuspension‬ Pintop 2.5 suspension system featuring 2.5" diameter King shocks. We finished the build off with 37" Toyo RT tires wrapped around a set of 17" Trail Ready wheels. It's far from done, but it's already a massive improvement from stock!

We’ll probably re-gear eventually, but it’s not bad actually. The diesel trucks don’t mind 37s at all, but on the gas trucks re-gearing is a little more worth while.

Shouldn’t need to re-gear the PW for 37’s since it comes with 4.10’s right? I have the Cummins that came with 3.42’s and I geared to 4.10’s when I went 37’s on my Carli kit. Looking at getting a PW now so just curious. Gearing def not my forte for knowledge.

@@Jibbs_actual If the PW has a stock 4:10 w/35” tire and you go to a 37,” I would think the 4:10 is sufficient. If you feel that you lost some power w/the 37’s, consider a bump up to a 4.56 or a 4.88. Your OD will help you retain hwy mileage. I have 4.88’s (posi) and lost only 200 rpm’s in 6th (my 6th gear is a .54/1 OD). Consider a locker or posi - you’ll love it. 👍

@@Jibbs_actual the only change in mpg I saw was around town (I have a 6spd w/OD). It dropped slightly to 12-14mpg. Hwy stayed same at 17-18 (2wd) 5,500 lbs. **I have a SC w/both pulleys and tune** (swapped out the 4:30 LSD to 4:88 posi). So I’m getting good mpg. If you feel ‘seat of pants’ power diminished, go to bigger gear. Otherwise good to go. PS: 37s remove 30-40 HP but they look so cool. 👍

An update to my post from 6 months ago... My pintop system arrived 4 days ago. I'll say this to help set the narrative. Once the off-road installers I chose to do the work (who specialize in big vehicles and have built many LandCruisers and the like ground up) were so impressed with the Carli radius arms, they took pics of them in the box and every time one of their other customers showed up while I was also there, the guys showed everyone who came in what I ordered. All were super impressed. I've spent north of $12,000 with CJC Offroad ordering everything from the suspension to BajaDesign lights and everything in between. I wouldn't order what I need for my PowerWagon anywhere else. I ASKED them for some vinyl to add to my truck wit their logos. Why? They do that good a job consistently. Cody has helped me pick the right components more than once when I call sales. Thanks all.

Excellent upgrades! They make an already admirable ¾ ton pickup, so much better. The one question that comes to mind is how they impact the payload and towing capacities. What are the before/after capacities? Of course, there will be some level of estimation involved, unless you have a way to measure it accurately.

Funny is I have 17,000 miles on my PW and I got the rear coils broken in and no longer do I have the rear hope and put a aftermarket steering stabilizer and no longer brakes sideways on hard braking. Yes a good suspension fixes all these problems but I didn’t want to build another truck since I have built jeeps in the past to where it drives better then stock with 40’s and no steering stabilizer bar needed and no axle steer. If I was driving offroad at 50 then like you said aftermarket suspension is needed for better handling and braking but for California $hitty roads and the slow offroad it does fine. If I find anymore weak points I’ll address them as they come.

CJC, anothe great piece of content. Question: the guys at Tiny Rig recently installed a Alu-Cabin on my PW (Phenomenal Job from Daniel and Team). On out last trip to Baja, we did experience some signifant sway ON-ROAD / HIGHWAY Driving. Will this suspension upgrade help reduce/elimate that sway (side to side bounce). We even got into a situation where the PW's traction control must have kicked-in and auto breaking was applied. Welcome your inputs before we pull the trigger. Thanks.

Sadly what you're experiencing isn't uncommon. These trucks have two factors that cause that: VERY low payload capacity (under 1,400 pounds for the Power Wagon) and more importantly a rear suspension design that has a ton of lateral movement as it cycles. We offer this system with a high capacity coil called the R2. That with a few extra add ons will get rid of that issue and get you the best setup possible. A few comments for the watchers from the owner of a 2021 Power Wagon optioned with the 75th Anniversary package and the safety package only. 1. I remain very interested in this upgrade so I asked Ram about warranty coverages. They commented if I were to replace the shocks and/or springs with an aftermarket kit and it has any lift associated with it, the warranty for anything suspension, transmission, differential, and swaybar disconnect would be voided upon installation. I'm attempting to get confirmation of this from someone other than the dealer but it's been rough going. The Magnuson-Moss Act, however, states the dealer must 'prove' the change caused the failure submitted for warranty repair. I have heard, however, it's been at the dealer discretion more frequently than not. I honestly don't know what would happen. 2. The comments about needing a kidney something or other and a mouthguard for the road in question is a bit of an exaggeration. Yes, it's somewhat rough but certainly not excessively so. I would say the shock upgrade with the reservoirs would last far longer and wouldn't deteriorate the feel over longer 'Baha runs'. This is from personal experience. 3. The axle hop mentioned is 100% a huge problem, maybe even more so than mentioned here. Even on a gravel road with a small incline I experience axle hop in 2WD and lost traction quite easily. I have to switch into 4H or go 5MPH. 4. I imagine the 37's with that offset and with the Toyos, the ride quality would be much more stable in those real articulation challenges. I'd love to get a firm answer from RAM about the warranty. I have less than 1000 miles on my truck and would do this upgrade tomorrow if I didn't lose warranty coverages.

Jason, unfortunately the truthful answer about warranty comes down to the dealer. Some have zero issues with quality suspension systems. Others will use them as an excuse to not warranty a headlight assembly. Our recommendation is to find a dealer that’s comfortable with modified trucks, and use them to install the system and perform warranty work. Our favorite is Peterson Ram, Jeep, and Ford in Idaho. We actually work directly with them to install Carli Systems at their dealership on brand new trucks!

Love the truck, love your guys product. But what happens when you do what most guys are doing like adding a canopy and roof top tent and stuff like that. Does it just squat the rear-end way down? How do the coils handle any kind of weight.

Carli's rear coils have a 2k payload capacity (more than the 1,400 pound factory capacity) but 2k gets used up quickly so you have to be weight conscious with your set up. A RTT is fine, but campers ETC are a no go on Power Wagons. We always prefer single rear wheel 3500s for overland style builds.

Did you have to trim anything to get those 37's to fit without rubbing? I was thinkin of going with 37x12.50R17 to avoid the rubbing issue unless 13.50 doesn't rub without having to trim.

To fit 37s on a Ram truck we recommend a +18 to +27 offset wheel that is no wider than 9,” as well as some mild trimming of the plastic fender liner and maybe pinch weld depending on the tire.

The torsion bar independent front suspension design lacks strength and travel. Unfortunately increasing travel or upgrading ride quality requires some major changes up front. While you may see a lot of companies offering bolt in coil over swaps, you’re still extremely limited on travel numbers without fabricating a new suspension set up!

The sway bar can stay or go. We chose to keep ours since that’s half the fun of a PW! As far as money saved, that math and choice is all up to you but there’s nothing particularly worth saving about the PW suspension aside from the sway bar and articulink radius arms which we kepy! The PW and Hemi trucks so get their own specific shock and spring tunes from Carli to make up for the weight changes though!

@@sh0cktim3 hp is only 260 but the torque is 480 lb ft, which i think is like 20 lb ft or so more than the v8. So if you wanna hot rod then the v8 would be the way to go. But rock crawling, regular 4 wheeling, the diesel would be great I'm thinking.

For these trucks the height increase up front is key to improve wheel travel and ride quality. The only way to increase wheel travel from ride height on a solid axle truck is to add a little height to separate the axle and frame.

Honest question, with all the changes to the stock setup, why get a power wagon and not just a regular 2500? Similar to an AEV conversion or something; then you’d have the option of a diesel.

All we changed is the suspension, which isn’t very special on the Power wagon. Lots of people prefer all the other benefits of the platform like the winch, lower weight of the gas engine, lockers etc!

I just purchased a 2022 Ram power wagon. Ive watched every video out there on suspension. I plan the order the set up on this video except the +2 coils in the rear. My question is, why did brad with trail recon add air bags after all the suspension work and the plus 2? I have a scout yoho camper that i will have in there occasionally. It weighs 950. Thanks in advance for the information

His camper weighed over 2,000 pounds when fully set up, which means it exceeded the Power Wagon's max GVWR. While the R2 coils sit level with 800-1,000 pounds in the truck. If your camper will be over 1,000 pounds when loaded with gear, we recommend that you add the same Firestone airbag/daystar cradle setup that Brad runs as well. We highly recommend keeping your camper as light as possible however so you don't exceed GVWR. @CJC Off Road thanks for the quick reply. Do airbags take away from the ride when its empty. I watched a video your guys posted with some questions about airbags. I wasn't 100 clear at the end of the answer. Lol. Will i still get the great ride with airbags ?

Sadly yes they do. Airbags both limit up travel and add spring rate, but there's really no other way to squeeze that capacity out of a 2500, so if you want to keep the truck it's the best way to reconcile everything. That's usually why we steer people with campers into the 3500 platform as it's just better suited for high payload situations. The other option is to reconsider your camping setup, and keep weight under 800 pounds. When you're under that mark, you can use R2 coils alone and have zero impact to articulation, travel, and ride!

The OEM Power Wagon does sit taller than the normal 2500 Rams!

I ordered a pintop leveling kit for my Superduty in November, still waiting, no exact ETA available. Kinda frustrating because I really need tires and I have to get the leveling kit on before the tires.

Unfortunately COVID has done a number on manufacturing and we're seeing the results of that in extended lead times. Normally all this stuff is on the shelf, but this year has been a major upset. Just know what everything will ship out as soon as the parts are available. We've been waiting months for the parts for this truck to even make this video!
