Putting A G80 Locker In My Chevy S10

Eaton G80 locking diff with 3.42 gears in my Chevy s10.

Although this video is 2 years old, I'll throw my $.02 in the mix. If you have an early 2WD S10, the hot ticket is to find a '98 or newer 2WD S10 Blazer that has the disc brake rearend in it at the local picknpull. Most of these have the 3.42 gear installed. It may or may not have the G80 Gov-Bomb locker in it. Take the entire rearend home with you. Next find a '98-02 Camaro/Firebird with the G80 in it and take this differential home with you. This will be the 7.5/7.625 Torsen differential that GM put in the f‐body to hold up with the LS1/ manual 6 speed, and it bolts into the S10 rearend. Remove the POS Gov‐Lok and install the Torsen differential using the S10 gearset if you like. New gearset, bearings, races and seals are a bonus. You're going to have figure out some stuff with rear brake lines, e-brake cables, and 4 wheel disc front to rear balance/valving and master cylinder issues. Good luck.

so i may have helpful info to anyone thinking about doing this swap. I believe the 2000 and earlier S10 4x4 all came with a locker, but 2 wheel drive didnt, and the 2 wheel drive also had a 4 inch wider differential. I bought a whole rear end from a 98 s 10 4X4. I found good info from others on the width rear end i would need to put under my 55 chevy truck, and that it has to be the 4X4 due to the wider width. full size trucks and blazers are too wide, and S10 2 wheel drive too narrow. I was lucky to find ot had the eaton locker in it, but not happy to find out it unlocks at 20 MPH. Ive watched a few videos on mods to keep it locked until deceleration that others may want to check out

I 100% recommend Lincoln Lock or any Diff locker If you get stuck on wet grass Lincoln Lock it.

All older 1989-1991 4x4 have locking gears not too sure what size i belive 7 or 8 but i got a 1989 4x4 and it always is locked unless mines stuck but its not welded either ik cause if not it would have been toast days ago

I take it you used the shims & bearings from the donor vehicle. It'd be Interesting to hear how its held up Looking to change the gears on my Sierra with 3.73s i got from a tahoe. I wanna save the TruTrac that's currently in my truck

As long as you have the right shims in then the backlash will be correct you can measure how it is originally or just get it close to how it felt original

Where did you get that locker?! That thing would fit PERFECTLY in my 94 sonoma. I'v been looking to upgrade.

I got it from a 4x4 Jimmy or blazer . In the glove box it will say g80 somewhere on the sticker.

I'm curious. Do you run straight gear oil in this unit or do you also add a limited slip additive in the oil?

No just straight gear oil works fine

What did you set your pre load to and how tight did you torque the pinion shaft nut ?

The pre load I just made the same so tightened it until the drag felt the same as before. idk the torque spec you can probably look them up easily

Ok, so I have some redundant questions. I currently have a 1993 2.8/T5 Sonoma and had tranny issues or at least thought so. Out of nowhere my rear end locked up on me while driving. I found a rear and from similar truck but that truck had a 4.3/700r4. How would that new rear end affect the truck as far as top speed RPM and all that? Not sure which gear ratio belongs to which set up, maybe you have some insight. I’ll be opening them up soon so I guess I’ll find out which gear each one has.

It just might have the same gears in it the 3.08 gears where pretty much stands in the 2wd trucks

Look in the glove box for the build option list. The 3 most common S10 gear ratios are GU4-3.08 GT4-3.73 GU6-3.42. You can google "S10 axle code" and find a complete listing. G80 is the code for the Gov-Lok differential. My '93 2.8 T-5 is GT4, 3.73.

It lasted almost a year but what did it was the v8 swap, didn't last long with the v8

The front is a smaller size and it wouldn't work they sell lockers after market for the front

Ummm... S series vehicles never had double headlights hahahah now the 2nd generation is 1994 1/2 to 1997 that had one piece headlights with 2 bulbs. Then 3rd generation was 1998 to 2004ish. But as far as double headlights there were none. I know this because I'm 38 and since I was 14 I've owned probably 75 S series. Including the first one which is 1982 production came out.

Appreciate the answer. If I understand correctly it's best to get locker and axles out same rear end ? Or is it a different model axles should come from?? I want try and find these for my truck when I get back on project. I installed 2 1/2 lift ,new 31 tires , 4x4 cable ingagement ,. Found a blower kit but way out of budget lol

@@jefferyknight9279 if you have the 3.08 open diff and go to 3.42 it will give you better acceleration but on to highway the rpms will be a bit higher so around town it might improve mpg but it will go down a bit on the highway. But it's not too much of a difference it's worth it.
