Come into the Nutnfancy Workshop as we re-edge the Hall of Fame Endura 4 (in a cool orange color). This is the Edge Pro Apex sharpener in action again and it's my favorite. You will see it produce wicked sharpness again even in my unskilled hands. Get it at: www.bladehq.com... Likability Scale on Edge Pro Apex: 10 out of 10

Look at Nutn's hand shaking around the 7 minute mark as he tries to hold that blade steady on the Apex table. Imagine having a dozen or so blades to do at a time. Imagine the challenge of keeping an 8" or 10" blade at a constant angle while you grind with the other hand. The Apex can do a great job, but I'm not sure it hasn't been seriously bested by the Wicked Edge, which holds the blade in place with a clamp, leaving the operator with only one task - grinding - to concentrate on.

If you use frog tape, the water won't affect it so much. Also, anyone buying an edge pro needs to also buy a drill collar so they they can maintain the correct angle when switching to different stones. Over time, the stone thicknesses will vary causing your sharpening angles to change as you switch stones.

I don't understand carrying a dull knife. I like to keep my knives sharp enough to easily cut receipt paper. The Spyderco sharpmaker works great on my delica 4 FFG and all my other knives. With all the different sharpening options these days, there is no excuse for a dull knife.

+Russel Bush I agree that a knife should never be dull, but that's a bit extreme. You can still easily take care of business with a dull knife if you're stabbing and not slashing... Prisoners use much worse every day and many people still die.

The thing about the Apex is that it uses water stones and they are a very soft stone and they will develop a hollow in them after some use. The hollow adds inconsistency to it. Water stones can be flattened on a glass plate with sandpaper though. I use a lot of water stones in my woodshop for my chisels and I flatten them after every sharpening session.

I use a similar sharpener and it is exceptionally good. For myself I put duct tape either side of the blade to avoid scratching, and sharpening I just go till I feel the burr on the other side, then flip and sharpen till burr, then move up to the next stone. Finish on a leather or balsa strop with honing compound. An angle cube is good for getting an exact angle. That said, I'm sure Nutnfancy has far more knives than I do.

Hey I'm currently designing a knife, I have the general sizing and stuff done so far. But I don't know jack about steels, I need a steel able for long term outdoor use but can still maintain an edge, I'm thinking aus 8. Also if your wondering about the knife, 7" tanto with a usable belly, 4.5" lond handle thats .75" thick and 1.25" wide. The blade is .25" thick sp it can take a beating. Going to make a short video of it soon, just incase i missed something.

I just bought a bit of timber and some 5mm balsa and stuck the two together. Like you say, the risk with stropping is ending up rounding off the blade and while I know there are people who swear by convexed edges I like the nice flat angles. I use Veritas compound and just draw it in a criss cross pattern on the balsa, same thing with the leather strop on wood. A friend has suggested using a hairdryer and some white oil (have to ask him what that is) to spread the compound evenly over the strop.

Nutn, I know you don't want to modify your technique, but have you thought about adding magnets to the bottom? They will hold your knife in place more securely. Obviously the stronger the magnets, the more secure. High grade earth magnets would lock your knife down, keeping it the same angle.
@newcoyote
@newcoyote 11 жыл бұрын
You're right.The stone defiantly need to be flattened.The stones also wear at different rates so when you lock the arm at a specific angle,the different thickness of each stone produces a different angle making for poorer results. This can be corrected with a drill stop collar.There are videos on YT that show how to do that but it would be nice if it was explained in the instructions.Something like that could be over looked if you're not thinking of every variable.Consistency is key.
@freman007
@freman007 11 жыл бұрын
A Tanto you have to sharpen in two steps, the first is the main section of the blade, and the second the tip. Same principle though, match the angle with your sharpener (unless you want to reprofile), sharpen (you'll feel a burr on the opposite side, which is telling you the steel has been made as fine as it will go), flip over, sharpen, move up to the finer stones. Then set the angle to match your tip and repeat the process.

The degrees is not standard on the Edge pro, it may very well be for the machine, but not on the knife bevel itself because it's due to the amount the knife hangs over the edge of the blade holder on the device. Graduation marks would be nice, or an angle finding cube that carpenters often use so you can dial in the exact number you're looking for.

Nutn, I suggest leaving the dust/detergent mixture on the blade and not wipe it off every time you switch the blade's side. The metal dust/oil mixture is what helps sharpens the blade more evenly

Giulio Rossi Check out the KME sharpener. It's the same exact same thing except it has a clamp that holds the knife in place rather than having to hold it in place by hand. The clamp rotates around so you don't even have to undue it when flipping the blade over. It's about $190 on with the base or $140 without it.

Hi Tony, I have been using one for a few years now, and in my opinion the Apex is one of the best systems for large blades. Theoretically there should be no limit, as you sharpen one section of the blade you can just move it over on the table and hit the next section.

Hey Nutn! I know you said not to do this in your video, but I just wanted to mention... I think you should take a couple minutes out of your day to look at a video of the Wicked Edge sharpening system. It uses the EXACT same technique that you use on the Edge Pro (which is a system I own) except you don't need to hold the knife in place, and you can sharpen each side of the blade at the same time. I can see how you strain to keep the knife in place.

I have found that it you don't let the knife get dull enough that it needs to be reprofiled and there are no nicks in it just starting at 600 and finishing with 1000 is by far the fastest way to go and it will get the edge shaving sharp every time.

Another benefit is that it has markings of each degree of angle on each side as you had suggested would be nice on the Edge Pro. I don't actually have a Wicked Edge, it is a bit out of my price range, and I have recently really gotten into sharpening on Japanese water stones (you won't find a dull knife in my house, and I have a lot of knives, let alone in my pocket as an EDC). However, I think that the Wicked Edge will give you the same beautiful results in a fraction of the time.

The in-n-out of the sharpener in 5 min can work, under some conditions. Re-profiling a factory edge is not one of those conditions. Honing a blade that you've already profiled, and put a double bevel on is one of those conditions. It's also less about the number of passes, and more about just working an edge until that side is finished (i.e. you can feel a burr along the entire blade). Already-profiled blades take much less time to sharpen, but this video accurately depicts re-profiling time.

I didn't want that here, still don't and if guys take offense, oh well and I don't care. This is just old school Nutn shop vid, nothing else. Use what works for you, I'm happy with this system...obviously.

IF YOU CANT AFFORD A SHARPENER: Buy a couple pieces of 300, 400, 600, 1000, 1500 wet or dry sandpaper. Use a sharpie on the edge show you know if you are making the proper contact and use a firm mousepad for backing. Apply some water and use them like a whetstone. Then strop on a leather belt. Not the best but gets the job done until you can afford a sharpener.

(Pt.2) Then when the edge is starting 2 get really sharp & sort of a polishedness to it the take it to the ( make sure U use alternating edges of cardboard after a while so ur not just rubbing it against the steel particles) then take the knife 2 the leather strop w/ some green(or fine) stropping compound & strop 3-5 times each side equally checking the edge as it goes then edge will have a slight 2 medium polish on edge then after each days worth of tasks repeat on strop only and

I prefer to use my belt sander, takes seconds, just as sharp as your wicked edge, but with the sander you get a convex edge as opposed a flat edge you get from that system. Convex takes less metal off the edge, and lasts longer than a flat edge. And for finding what angle you used last, it's as simple as taking a sharpie and blacking out the edge, then when you make a pass you'll see what you are taking off by looking at the black left on the edge.

(pt.3) edge will stay very sharp for very long time and you won't need to sharpen it as often and not taking away so much material blade will naturally last longer believe me or not I swear it works and takes only a few minutes try it sometime let me know how it works you'll be surprised (naturally the first time you do this it will take a while to polish the edge and there is alittle bit of a learning curve with different steels but once that edge is polish takes 30sec to 5min for same results

This is the one of the only vids I've watched nutn that I couldn't believe you wernt open to people's insight. All of you complaints about the apex are fixed in another knife sharpener. One that is, frankly, better in every way. I've used the apex, lansky, stocks, stones..you name it and the sharpener I landed on that stuck is the wicked edge. The wicked edge is a lot like the KME Sharpener expect that the KME isn't as steady and doesn't have quite the same capability for fine tuning the angle as the WE. Although, the wicked edge is like $150 more so it's up to you if its worth the extra money. The WE is great in the sense that you can obtain the same exact results every time you sharpen.

Not trying to be a smart-ass, but the way of creating an edge that I've been taught uses strokes AGAINST the edge exclusively, until a burr is shaped along the entire length of the blade, then turn the knife around, do the same, then switch to a finer stone. I've had good resullts with that. Now I'm seeing Nutn grind up and down the edge, and to be honest I'm not very impressed with the time that Edge Pro took to create an edge. Could that be due to going "wrong direction"?
@freman007
@freman007 11 жыл бұрын
Hey guys, chill out. Everyone has their own method of sharpening and as long as the end result is something you could potential shave with, who cares how you get there. I carry a small cheap stone to work because the knives they give us there are mucho blunto. Scrubbing in a decent edge is the work of a few minutes and means I'm not fighting with a blunt knife. On the other hand, like Nutn, I like my personal knives to be really nice. Systems like the EdgePro and Lansky are good for that.

I have done a decent job on my delica with the smith's sharpening system, but it does not gleam like that edge...

This reminded me I had to sharpen my knife. (Benchmade 940, your reveiw) Was used to cut up some carpet, 'cause my dad couldn't find his razor knife. Pretty dull to slicing coarse paper while listening to this on a Spiderco Sharpmaker.

I am amazed on the edge you can put on this. Great video on the Edge Pro.

Nice. Would diamond would make the job faster and easier? 1000 is good biting edge. Have you tried running the stone vertical to the edge?

does 1000 grit start giving a mirror edge? Also. How does sharpening a FFG blade effect blade angle?

And how many knives do you carry? Are they all that sharp? Because I EDC usually four knives, but the most used one is more like worker than shaver :-) If you know what I mean

Nice... you got the 'Pro' version, which also gives you the option to add a sissor sharpening component.

My budget is the 5 dollar stone I bought 20 years ago. The Edge Pro is nice but a 165 nice?
