Do you think VG-10 is an adequate steel for skinning a rhinoceros or for use on a grapefruit? For my EDC tasks, I don't like to be limited by a less-than-adequate powdered metallurgical steel.

+mhanlen1 I will surely take that under advisement. Because I think poverty is directly correlated to character, I work at an elementary school. Therefore, when I foolishly spend my scarce money on expensive blades, I find that I have to eat ramen noodles for the rest of the month. But, when I have a knife with a 'super steel', at least I can eat my Top Ramen with tactical aplomb. I've heard that an overbuilt Medford pocket-brick makes a fine rhino skinner.

Nice review. I fell down the knife rabbit hole a few years ago, and later realized that I don't need a folding prybar brick for most tasks & that good geometry is everything for cutting food. I like the Endura as well as the Benchmade 940 & Barrage 580/581. This may be old UFI, but if you haven't tried Opinels, you are missing out on true food dissmembering (get a few different sizes). I hope you become more successful with your channel. Your witty, smart ass humour & great camera skills are greatly appreciated,...and are partially to blame on becoming a flashoholic as well :P
@AdvancedKnifeBro8 жыл бұрын
+Beyondlawjik So I'm on a kick where I'm buying the standards I've never owned. I bought a Mora companion, a Benchmade 551- and you're right I've heard many people recommend them, and they're cheap. I'll definitely pick some up. I had only carried a leatherman for years, but since doing the flashlight stuff I thought I'd start doing knife videos. I like making videos and as long as people watch them, I'll keep making them. It's a learn-as-I-go process, just like lights- but I have fun with the gadgets and the conversations I have with people under the videos. Thanks man! The channel hasn't grown quite as fast as I thought, but I have fun with it! I'm not the worlds greatest videographer, but I know my way around a camera enough to make a clear video.
@beyondlawjik76848 жыл бұрын
+mhanlen1 I still have yet to acquire the videographer skills such as yourself, as I wouldn't mind doing a couple knife/flashlight reviews for shits & giggles, and to also get word out on inexpensive products that work well...not just the snob stuff (but those are nice too). As for other good "cheap" knives check out:Fixed Blades - Condor Knife & Tool (lots of good options)Folding Blades - Mercator (Black Cat), Real Steel (very nice for the money)Two rabbit holes are better than one, I figure if you have a foot in each one, there's no way you can completely fall down one of the holes...right!?!?!

I bought mine back in October of 2021. I wasn't really paying any attention to it... until today (04/17/2023). For some weird reason, I've really been into backlocks or lockbacks or whatever. I actually disassembled mine in October of last year I think (?) and I wasn't able to put it back together so I put all the parts in its box and just kept it. Last week, for some weird reason, I decided to bring it out and give it another shot. I was able to reassemble the knife and I've carried it twice since. I'm going to have to put some blue Loctite on both the pivot screw and the lockback or backlock screw so I won't be able to carry it for 24 hours at the very least. I'm thinking of getting a Police 4 or maybe another Endura 4 in another color.

Could you do a review on the Pacific Salt 2 with a serrated edge? Most people prefer plain edge but there's quite a few people who love the fully serrated Spydercos, especially those with H1/H2 steels. Also the sharpmaker makes keeping a serrated edge sharp very easy. Great video!
@richardcarlson29834 жыл бұрын
Hey knifebro... did you know that the cover of the sharpmaker fits "over" the base (when opened and rods are inserted vertically) to make a comfortable and secure "other hand" grip? Look closely and you'll see a little slot where the edge of the "lid" slots in - right beside the brass protector rods. Ignore me if you already knew this! You likely just chose not to bother with it in the video to save time....

+mhanlen1 I think its just hard to drop more money when something just plain works for you UNTIL you lose it or wear it out. if i lost an endura id just buy another one, then i started hunting on ebay for used ones so id have a backup. one day i got a cheap ass multi tool and hated how it flopped around in my pocket scratching my leg, then found the wingman and eventually the skeletool which to me now is the shit. tried a bunch of budget knives, got laughed at at rainier arms for having an endura, somehow i ended up with a pm2 and a microtech and a bunch of budget folders. buying, selling, trading, losing, who would have thought. ive given my sister 2 of my enduras and was playing with my combo edge foliage endura 4 during your whole video lol. i still have a full serrated endura from when the pocket clip was molded to the handle! pocket clip broke so i ground that off. it started rusting so i sand blasted it at work. OLD ASS AUS 8 HAHA. i dont have anymore with the big barrel phillips head screw in the handle but my cousin still does. thats his work knife. still swears by it too!

@SailfishSoundSystem8 жыл бұрын
I like flat grinds better. Less drag. I have a Sage 1 and will cut forever, but it sucks to resharpen. VG10 is my go to steel the way Spyderco does it. I have the same Sharpmaker set up. I had a Crock Stick, but I dropped a rod and it shattered. I remember when VG10 was considered a super steel. I'm old.
@AdvancedKnifeBro8 жыл бұрын
+SailfishSoundSystem I got the diamond rods recently, and that really helped me to sharpen some shit that has given me trouble. When I need to reprofile... I have this harbor freight diamond thing that was like $10 (like everything there) and I set it on the rods so I can get dat 40 degree. The spyderco diamonds are more expensive, so I'm a bit more careful with them. Yeah, now it's just boring old VG10.

I agree. Endura 4 is the one. I agree. If I had to pick one and only one EDC folder it would be the Endura 4. This folder is included in my rotation of EDC. I have used one of the Endura 4s to baton smaller pieces of wood. Just make sure the blade is not locked in place, slightly folded in. It works OK and can certainly be used in a pinch. I bought the Military, too big for pocket carry, the Delica, too small, might as well use the Leatherman tool knife. I have not tried the Para Military. I think the Endura 4 and the Paramilitary are probably the best 2 folders for EDC.
@AdvancedKnifeBro8 жыл бұрын
+mikedifeo Another Paramiltary recommendation! I will get this knife someday... it's definitely my next spyderco unless a great deal comes along. Yeah I wasn't interested much in the delica... and the only reason I'd own it is a reference knife... but you're right, I may as well use the wave. I think a 3 and a half inch blade is kind of the sweet spot for me. The Endura is big, light, and unobtrusive. I've tried many other styles of blades, but this one just feels the most "right." I've always thought of a pocket knife as a useful tool more than anything, and my requirements are not fast deployment or looks... or even super steel. Just something easy to maintain and practical.

My first EDC knife was the Spyderco Endura 4, too, but when I got my Case Stockman, I compared them against each other. It was easier and faster for me to get a razor's edge on my Stockman's 3 blades, even if the Endura's blade lasts longer. Then, I tested them against each other by doing some wood carving and whittling, but I wasn't abusing my knifes at all. The different blades on the Stockman allow for a greater versatility of cuts and uses than the leaf shape blade of the Endura 4. The tip of the Endura 4 eventually chipped off, and the main blade screw on my Endura 4 loosened up. I didn't have a Torx screw with me, so I quickly lost confidence in the Endura 4, and it was replaced by my Case Stockman. People complain about the poor wear resistance, low hardness, and edge rolling of Case's Tru-Sharp SS 420HC steel, but I learned that I prefer my knife's blades on the softer side, and I would rather deal with edge rolling or blade bending than chips or broken knives. I paid $59.24 for my Endura 4, even though they typically go for about $80, and my Case Stockman was gifted to me, but it goes for about $69.99, although Case Stockmans can go for as low as $40 for synthetic handles, and average around $60 for typical bone handles. Oh, and the Stockman is damn near legal anywhere.
