Spyderco Endura 4 FFG: "Now Perfect" by Nutnfancy

The regular Spyderco Endura 4 is an excellent blade but in my earlier review I termed it "Slightly Imperfect." While the Sabre grind is strong I do not think it ideal and it gives the blade some unneeded extra heft and a slower deployment. Also some Enduras I've had and examined had some vertical play in their lockup. Enter the impressive Spyderco Endura 4 Full Flat Ground (FFG) version, first seen in TNP at the 2010 SHOT Spyderco booth review. Available in 2010 in the colors blue, brown, gray, green, or purple, this is a slam dunk improvement on the popular Endura. It wears the same excellent, razor sharp FFG blade I first saw in the more expensive Endura G10 version. It has outstanding fine edge characteristics, good edge holding, and good rust resistance. Slicing and food preparation capabilities are vastly improved. This FFG blade, a long time favorite of mine in many blades, also lightens the Endura 4 to a feathery 3.4 oz as well. It seems to deploy even quicker that the regular Sabre ground Endura due to this reduced mass. The tip, while a bit more delicate, is sharper and has outstanding penetration capabilities (and great belly). In about 8 models examined, all showed solid lockups as well and the vertical play is gone. Jimping is perfectly executed on the thumb ramp. The bi-directional texturing on the FRN handles is effective and the nested stainless steel liners are about as milled out as possible and set standards of excellence in this vein. They, along with the lockback design, add strength to the lightweight tactical knife POU which I think the Endura 4 FFG is best suited for. This strength is achieved without any weight gain. The blackened pocket clip is positionable to any of the four corners to achieve the "just right" carry position for the user. It's strong, appropriately sized, and well rounded in usual Spyderco fashion. Value is high considering the cutting performance, steel choice, and (as of 2010) the limited nature of the colorations. This was the first knife I bought that cost more than $20. I never had a problem with my other knives, they cut so long as I keep them sharp. I was queasy about spending $70 on a knife when my plethora of cheaper knives have never failed me. OH MAN! The FFG VG-10 FRN Endura 4 never leaves my side. it is a bit tougher to sharpen than my 440a knives, but holds the edge sooooooo much longer. This review was pretty much what sold me! You rock nutnfancy! Keep up the awesome reviews!

I handled this knife at the local sporting goods store today and pretty much came to the same conclusion you did in your video. Great knife, perfect! i love my spyderco's. Actually your review is why i bought the endura 4 (sabre w/ combo edge, the only one they had at the Lackland AFB BX). Wish i would have waited for plain edge but combo has had its uses. Picked up a new Delica 4 to replace my EDC Delica 3 about a month ago too. In boy scouts we learned a thing or two about knife quality (beat up a lot of knives in my time), and my Sypders look feel and perform well above my expectations. Keep it up dude, love your channel.

Help!!!!!!!!!! I already have so many that will do the job. Whatever the job is, from bushcraft, survival, tactical, EDC, gentleman's knives, cool but cheap, interesting and a few that are just plain junk and I'm too stubborn to throw away. So why do I need this one? First off, believe it or not, I still don't own a Spyderco. Nope. Not a single one. A few clones, yes. But an honest to goodness Spidey? Nope. I have found some very high value knives in the inexpensive range, and will not pay over $100 for ANY folder, period. But this is one I really would love to have. Still having a problem with letting go of $60 bones for the price of admission. But thanks for the excellent review NF. The more I hear of your reviews, the more your style has grown on me. Great job! Thanks for enabling me in my addiction. ;). This has been placed on my wish list now thanks to you. But life and economics dictate that I exercise patience for a while. My newly acquired SOG Aegis in classic Satin and Black will tide me over, but also in a heavier more value based direction, I am also edc-ing a Ganzo G711. Lightening fast manual deployment, Axis lock, G10 "H"-like G-10 scales, but with the added weight of solid SS liners. A bit of targeted skeletonizing in the liner of the Ganzo, along with a slight melting of sharp edges on G-10 and SS liners, would almost make this "value based" knife close to a 10. But I digress. The Spyderco brand is one I've intended to add for a long time, the Tenacious being a strong candidate, and presumed to be the probable first of the line, may just have been usurped by the Endura 4 FFG, due to its qualities and your expert delivery and description of same. FFG Endura in zdp-189 was my first real brand knife. Absolutely no complaints what so ever. Lightweight, thin, best pocket clip ever, great gimping, no blade play and WICKEDLY SHARP OUT OF BOX! I used it several times to shave myself when i found not to have a razor and that was after months of EDC and utillity use WITHOUT SHARPENING it. By the way took it apart twice to clean out all that fuzzy pocket stuff that got into it. Only hard time was putting back the lock, since the spring is hard.

Just ordered a Spyderco Endura 4 FRN, what is the difference between the FFG and the FRN because my Endura (as described on blade HW's website) is supposed to be full flat ground VG-10. I'm confused at the dirrefences and am not a Spyderco expert as this is my first one ever.

Funny, I was just going through my knife collection to change up my EDC (Which is and was for awhile an Endura 4 FFG) every blade I pulled out I compared to the Endura and put it back, to make a long story short the endura was clipped back in the pocket. It's my overall favorite knife and has no gimmicks and will fill most needs. I came back to watch this vid and instantly purchased a 2nd (picked up the waved version) #Lovethisknife

Hmm this knife blade length is 3.75 inches but cutting edge is 3.48.Trying to figure out if i should buy one to carry but i think my states limit is 3.5 inches.So i might be pushing it.Any thoughts

There's a couple vids floating around on youtube that show the locking mechanism on this knife failing very easily. Like when thrusting or putting moderate pressure on the spine. Has anyone else had that experience? I was worried when I saw those vids because I thought my Delica might have the same problem.

I am thinking of getting one of these. It looks like it would make a good food knife. The wide blade would be good for spreading stuff. The longer blade would facilitate getting to the bottom of a peanut butter jar. The longer blade would also facilitate cutting things like sandwiches. I also like the fact that they come in purple. Admittedly I also want a carry a larger knife because I can. Oddly enough, in California there are no blade length restrictions on folding knives. I could legally carry concealed a spring assist with a 6 inch blade if I wanted too.

@fustah FFG means full flat grind and refers to the blade grind. FRN mean fiberglass-reinforced nylon and refers to the handle scales. You can have both on the same knife as with the endura here reviewed. you can find them on amazon.
