I was given an Amaryllis for Christmas about three years ago. And I was too lazy to open the box and plant it. Weeks later I finally opened the box and found a tiny shrivelled plant - little leaves, little dried up flower, dried out bulb. I felt so guilty I immediately planted it and belatedly nurtured it. Nothing much happened, except a few leaves here and there. But now - EASTER - and I have two lovely blooms. I'm amazed how tough they are.

Thanks Jo for your comment. I just purchased couple of bulbs on clearance at Tractor supply for less than $4.00 each which also had dried up flowers and little leaves. You have given me encouragement that my purchase was not in vain. I love rescuing plants!!

You can plant these in the ground. I put mine in a little flower bed that is right beside a wall on the house. When cold weather comes in it just kinda dies down, but it comes back in the spring. This year it had 4 of the biggest red blooms I've ever seen. This little flower bed is kind of in a frost free zone. I even have strawberry begonia and an airplane plant that spreads like wild fire. I live in northern MS in zone 7.

TIP: Cut white styrofoam packaging material to fit the bottom of your pot to help with drainage and keep dirt from exiting drain hole. The when you stake your tall flowering stalks, your stake will hold easily and Firmly in the styrofoam.

I planted my bulb out side in the garden and dug it out in October. It had produced really large leaves in a big fan over the summer. The bulb had long rots on it. I shook off all the soil, put it in my cold closet in a paper bag but forgot to get it out until April! It had a bloom bud, I cut off a lot of the roots so it fit in my pot, and a month later, I have several large leaves and six blooms! So beautiful.

I live in North AL zone 7. Each fall, I buy an amaryllis kit and enjoy its blooms. First warm days - which can be March - I plant the bulb in the ground. Of course we have cool days and even frost afterwards. I’ve been doing this for years. Each May I’m rewarded with blooms! I was gifted 3 this year. I’m waiting on a warm day to put them in the ground.

The plant shooted up and today - Christmas day I have one flower in full bloom, the other one will bloom tomorrow. There are small ones are coming up! I'm sure they thrive in Louisiana due to the humidity and summer heat. My Mom planted 1 red/white variegated Amaryllis bulb back in 1973 and now a lovely patch of them that come back every year since then. They've survived droughts, 100+ summer temps and not much care until about 2 years back when I started maintaining them. Only water them occasionally and fertilize with epsom salt and coffee grounds once in a while. (Inland Southern California)

I have been doing this routine, except I cut off all the greens in early September, clean off the bulbs , and store in paper bags in the basement, starting them again around NOV 1ST. I always get new leaves and I get new flowers about 75% of the time. I don't like the way the leaves look, and in late spring, early summer, hide the pots in spots around my garden. I am in Zone 7, but last year I was surprised to discover one blooming among a bed of ivy. I didn't plant it, but probably threw an anemic looking bulb in the bed. Sometimes nature is a better gardener than me.

Once the bloom is over, I re pot them in a very large and deep pot usually 6 to 8 bulb per pot and put them outside like you and feed heavily. I bring them in September and continue to let them grow year round and the bulbs get huge. I have several big pots so I only let one pot go dormant per year and do as you do and the blooms are great.

I just have to divide every 2 a 3 years regularly but what a surprise when they bloom a dinner plate size. Aside from the beauty of the blooms is that my yard is the only one in the neighborhood that does not have gophers. I read somewhere that the amaryllis puts out an odor that replies gophers so of course I planted to see if indeed it worked. I'm pleased to say that it does.

I simply allow my amaryllis to dry in late October by removing from the soil and drying in brown paper. Cut the dead foliage off, repot and it blooms reliably EVERY year. Then, when blooms are done, I repot and put outside after last frost as a patio plant. Repeat in October.

*Beautiful ~ thanks for your help! I don't think I knew that some people don't expect this flower to re-bloom! Mine is entering its third Christmas season,* and this past year, it actually bloomed twice (December-ish 2020 and the spring time 2021). As I reflect on it, my plant's 'dormancy' period was probably be 'ignoring' it on an indoor window ledge (facing the westside of my home that got lots of shade in the spring and summertime), with very infrequent watering. Not sure what effect this makes, but I also don't trim or cut the stalks, which grow all year long. I am now getting ready for it to bloom again ... around THIS Christmastime! Great content!!!♥

I live in Tampa Fl. The bulb / tubular plants are excellent for this area, or even more south of me. My neighbor and I have these flowers along with other types of bulb / tubular. We NEVER have to pull them out. We leave them in the ground all year, great thing about our area. In the winter months, Dec Jan it can get very cold here some nights. They do fine, in fact this past winter we had some nights around 30 degrees. It did nothing to my plants. They don’t go dormant either, another great thing about my area . I’m adding this comment for those who may live in southern Florida. They are perfectly fine in complete full sun with no shade. Now that right there tells you a lot! We simply cannot grow flowers here, it’s extremely to hot and humid. But bulbs and tubes do awesome. Other flowers can be grown outside between Oct thru April / May. Once May hits, don’t waste your money. It irks me that Lowe’s don’t sell these types of plants. This year they have sold several colors of calla lilies. But they don’t do good in full sun, and are best as a houseplant. But can grow outside. The peace lily I’ve never had good luck with in the hot summer months outside. I’ve been experimenting for 20 years, growing flowers here, this is what I found works! Tomato plants... do NOT wait until March or later to plant. They will die and fast! Even in partial shade. My tomatoes grow wild from my plants from last year. I may buy a couple more from Lowe’s. Buy them in late fall up to Jan, no later than Feb. they won’t live. I’m from Missouri, gardening here is difficult, different and experimental at times. Our fall winter and spring seasons are the time to grow tomatoes. Vegetables just don’t do real good in our summer months, it’s simply to hot and humid. They have to be watered like every couple days, or they die!!

For mine I let it the leaves die off naturally. Then I gave it one good watering before letting it dry out completely. Like bone dry. Then I gave it another good watering, and leaves started growing shortly after. And once the leaves were fully grown, a flower stalk came up. I also repotted it when the leaves first started dying because it was my first amaryllis so I didn't understand what was happening. But I've talked to others who recommend repotting once a year, so. Accidentally helped it? Anyway it's bigger and healthier this year than last. And faster growing too. Also while the leaves grew first this time, the first year they did not. And I got two stalks out of it, the second of which was VERY tall.

I have read so many articles/care guides on this but this is probably the best and most informative thing I've come across. 😄 All the articles talk about them blooming during summer and I'm like... But what if it's blooming in December what do I do then? Is "summer care" still valid for summer? 😆 This answered my questions, so thank you. Now I am a little more confident I can actually take care of my amaryllis after it's done blooming, even if it won't necessarily get to bloom next year. It hasn't bloomed yet since I bought it from the store about 10 days ago but I already decided then I wasn't just going to toss it after Christmas, that I would take up the challenge to try to get it to bloom again.

Thanks so much for that detailed explanation of aftercare after flowering! Mine didn't even flower the first year I had it. Only several fronds (leaves). Let it stay dormant for about 6 months and it bloomed beautifully! Deep, dark and vibrant red blooms (4)! Great tips! Will have to check out your other videos! :D

I live in the Houston Texas area and we had a 100 yr freeze this year of 14 degrees. night and 19 degrees day temps for 3 days. I was concerned about them as I do plant them in the ground with outstanding results and they came up and bloomed gloriously this Spring. They of course don't bloom at Christmas as it is cold here, but I always look for their early display. JFYI.

Hi Brenda - I'm so glad to see a comment posted by someone who grows amaryllis in their landscape! I'm in zone 10 and had no idea amaryllis can grow in our zone, so I'm excited give it a try this year. Do you have yours planted in full sun? I assume since your bulbs are in the ground, you don't put them in a basement to go dormant - is that right, and if so, do they still rebloom for you?

@@elisasoto1531 They are planted in the ground and in full sun. They grow with no dormant period. They rebloom with more blooms from the continued multiplying of the bulbs every year for 3 seasons now. I have a special place in my beds for just Amaryllis adding to it as I find different colors. My husband is just crazy about them. I live in zone 8.

@@brendajernigan7642 You guys (and E. Oregon for that matter) definitely get hammered during the summer with those temps! 😓 Some friends that moved out there made a funny comparison - in Fla, the moment you step outside you feel like you're in a rice cooker... but when a breeze blows during the Tx summer, you feel like you're in a convection oven 😂 I'm more worried about the our solar radiation, tough. I figure if our sun wasn't harmful for amaryllis bulbs, they'd be in everyone's landscape (I don't think I've ever seen them in residential or commercial landscapes). I guess worse case, I can try keeping them as house plants like Laura or just chucking them after they bloom. Here's hoping! 🤞🏼

Always remove the pollen from the blooms - even a bit can cause irreparable kidney failure in cats. Pollen makes a mess too, and I've heard removing it can prolong the bloom time.

I plan to pot some and sell to raise $ to help my disabled daughter. Maybe get her started to earn some cash and do something that makes her happy. I’m sure it will help her depression as well. An Amaryllis Story: In December 2020 I gave an Amaryllis growing kit to my 87 year old neighbor who was ill and quite home-bound during the pandemic. She was struggling greatly with her health, and I wanted so much for her to be able to watch an Amaryllis grow and bloom in her home to bring some of nature's life and color back to her indoor world. For whatever reason, the Amaryllis bulb I gave my friend grew, but never bloomed. She and I were a bit disappointed, however, good things were to come! Christmas 2020 passed and the months went by, and then in May 2021 my friend made her transition and passed away. I missed her dearly! So when Christmas came again I asked my hubby for an Amaryllis kit to grow in honor of Mary Lu. I put the bulb in the fridge for a month prior to planting it in soil mixed with pearlite. Well, let me tell you, this Amaryllis brought me so much joy! It not only grew two strong stalks, but it gave SEVEN gorgeous, red blooms that catch the light of the sun with incredible vibrancy! Mary Lu clearly had decided, from the other side, to help this Amaryllis out and bless my socks off! Thank you Mary Lu, for the most beautiful Amaryllis I have ever had the pleasure of growing in my home! ❤️ I will remember you always! I hope you are growing all the flowers you want in heaven, and that they are always blooming!

I live in Tampa, I never ever have to dig up bulbs. They get huge. I have a variety of bulb / tubular flowers. They all are perfect for outdoor gardens. I have them in full sun, no shade. Just keep the bulbs in the ground every year, never dig them up. If you transplant you may not get flowers the first year, or you may. My neighbor has so many bulb flowering plants she gave me a bunch. I have one that looks like a lily, but the flower only stays for a few days, not long at all. Next time it blooms I’m going to try to cut them and put in a vase.

I had an Amaryllis that, after flowering last year, developed a lot of green leaves in the windowsill above the heating until the winter. I wanted to force new flowering, I stopped watering, the leaves remained fresh and green. Then I cut the fresh leaves from the bulb, peeled the brown membrane from the bulb and waited for what would happen. If the bulb showed new growth after a few weeks, gently start watering again. Now the bulb again has two sturdy flower stems, one bud is already flowering with 5 flowers, the other is still growing.
