Well done on your cool video. Here is some information to help you. A PAE distro will allow a 32bit to use 4GB RAM on some computers. The motherboard _(since slot A and B might requite you take the case off to see slot A and also to observe the other slot B for RAM)_ will take a second 2GB DDR2 SODIMM _(667MHz or better generally, e.g. PC2-5300 S)_ to top up the RAM to 4GB although _(and while you consider the OS you opt for)_ it may report only 3.37 GB available and take graphics usage of shared memory architecture into account. It makes a difference. It should thereby be reasonable for XFCE desktop _(and mozilla should play a 240p or 360p video in KZbin to a tolerable experience even if a some frames drop)._ You might have a 512MB SODIMM to swap out for a 2GB either in the SlotB by means of a RAM trapdoor or in the SlotA located internally. Before you do, take clear photos of every BIOS screen so as to have a record of the settings and then reset the CMOS by removing and replacing the CMOS CR2032 battery _(and you might have to do that more than once)_ but obviously take the laptop large battery out first and be disconnected from the mains electricity supply whilst following static precautions (which is standard practice behaviour). You might find that the USB pendrive boots once more. On a core2duo (similar speed dual core but a desktop), I ran debian vanilla _(trying GNOME, XFCE primarily although I did other desktop environments too),_ and even though it reports not using all the RAM when on 2GB, having over 3.5 GB made a difference in performance. I didn't install load of bloat software so it wasn't that. I also installed a bunch of software later and tested it just in case but the results were the sdame (no significant dependency impact). It simply runs better. My comment has no hate in it and I do no harm. I am not appalled or afraid, boasting or envying or complaining... Just saying. Psalms23: Giving thanks and praise to the Lord and peace and love. Also, I'd say Matthew6.

the Dell D620 has the Intel 945 chipset, which is itself limited to 3.5GB of addressable RAM with 4GB installed, even if you install a 64 bit capable Core 2 Duo CPU. (which was/is a pretty common upgrade on these laptops). a PAE enabled kernel wouldn't make a difference on this particular computer, and there are almost no systems with more than 4GB to actually use that aren't already 64 bit. the D630 has the Intel 965 which maxes out at 8GB (and a full 8GB at that).

@@hburke7799 I'll say the same again and this is information to help you. Like I said, even though it can have another 2GB stick of RAM so that the sticks of RAM are 4GB, the amount available is 3.37GB. So the comment is not saying it will have 4GB available, to use. My comment does not say that all 4GB is there to be used. I wrote: _"... to top up the RAM to 4GB although (and while you consider the OS you opt for) it may report only 3.37 GB available and take graphics usage of shared memory architecture into account."_ I said a PAE distro will allow a 32bit to use 4GB on 'some' computers. That does not specify that computer. I then went on to distinguish this computer. A PAE Operating system is still compatible even if not all the RAM is used. As an aside, a limit usually under about 3GB for RAM can mean no more than that is used on some different older operating system with no PAE, such as other computers. This information is here to help you so have a great day. My comment has no hate in it and I do no harm. I am not appalled or afraid, boasting or envying or complaining... Just saying. Psalms23: Giving thanks and praise to the Lord and peace and love. Also, I'd say Matthew6.

@@obsoletepowercorrupts my comment was purely informational, also meant no harm etc. the graphics only 'borrows' 64MB or 128MB (depending on how the bios sets it up), the rest of the limitation is the chipset which is limited to 32 bit addressing. your reported 3.37GB makes sense, as 3.5GB - 128MB for GMA = ~3.37GB of RAM. on a D620 with Nvidia graphics you would see just a few MB shy of 3.5GB it's still better to have 4GB of ram on these systems though, because these days 2x 2GB sticks of 667Mhz DDR2 are incredibly cheap. and once you have such a config you will have symmetric dual channel.

nice! I found an old laptop from this era (with the same Centrino Duo CPU) and installed endeavorOS arch on it. The KDE DE wasn't running smooth so I installed i3, which I have no idea how to use... but at least it can run tetris and doom! and firefox, very slowly...

@@Kaoplo The distribution kernel took about 10 hours, down to about 40 minutes with a custom kernel, and "emerge -e @world" took about 3-4 days. If you were to go the route I did I would strongly recommend installing and configuring Ccache, saves so much time.

Thanks for testing Archlinux32, sorry about the PGP keys, we got hit by a classic "keys expired, monitoring warned us about it and we ignored the warning". There is also a hard way to recover (in case every package even the keyring package is broken), see on "bugs@archlinux@32" bug FS32#318.

Thanks so much for the video. Seeing things in actual order was a lot more helpful than many of the text instructions which didn't 100% match up with this random old machine. I'm running into an issue in the last part though and I'm wondering if you or anyone here knows the answer, when I run arch-chroot /mnt it says 'chroot: failed to run command ■/bin/bash■: No such file or directory' Other solutions online don't seem to be resolving the problem. You run into this at all?
@Kaoplo Жыл бұрын
this video wasn't really intended to be a tutorial, but rather more of a log or experience with this certain distribution. Don't worry though I will gladly help you, if it cannot find the bash binary it probably means you did something wrong earlier on in the install, try retracing your steps, make sure everything is mounted, formatted correctly, and you ran the pacstrap command correctly
@urthow Жыл бұрын
@@Kaoplo And a useful log of experiences it was. So far, this has been the first resource I've come across where I could actually see what was meant to be happening in front of me. Thanks for answering any way. I did keep searching after I left the comment and it was tracing through the pacstrap (after like the 5th attempt and watch through, i swear I know your voice back to front now). While tracing through the dialogue of the pacstrap it turned out it wasn't installing many of the packages for some reason. I guess for anyone else who winds up here with the same issue, you can try the following: - I tried to run >pacman -Syu to update the packages (which is where I saw it wasn't installing the packages due to space limits) and found out that root was limited to something tiny. The following increased the size and the packages started working. > mount -o remount, size=1G /run/archiso/cowspace ] The other thing was to try change the keyserver (from the arch wiki). > find and edit /etc/pacman.d/gnupg/gpg.conf (i did this using nano) Then change the line that says 'keyserver' to the following: keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com I've been told by a friend that I most probably missed a step or something but I took a break and tried mint 17 rebecca which had a option to force PAE (which presumably I should be able to use though it's disabled) and it installed. Will be back to try arch 32bit again soon.
