What I do for the helping friends is set aside a very designated amount from each check specifically for helping other people, and break it out when there is threat of a snowball effect or an emergency (like if someone is evicted). Making sure it's utilitarian and giving them the utilitarian thing directly is helpful in sniffing out if people are using you (renting the moving truck and getting food as opposed to just handing them cash), but at the end of the day you just have to know them well and trust them as people not to abuse that. It will always be weird asking for money, it's very humbling. I consider being willing to be poor to benefit others is quite virtuous.

Important to keep in mind, re: ROB, G&W, Marth -- While they were ancient by 2001, the Game & Watch series and the R.O.B. accessory _had_ released outside of Japan. Fire Emblem, up to that point, _hadn't._ You don't have to give specifics for us to understand that the situation was bad; the combo of "please don't use my work" & "pay me more than you were gonna" paints a clear picture of the kind of person you're talking about.

53:00 It's a good thing to not find yourself out of touch with what most people have to deal with, but like... don't underestimate how valuable it is that you can look at yourself, your situation, and acknowledge the privilege that hard work and maybe a little luck managed to land you. For every moment of, "I had to share a bedroom with 6 dudes at a Smash event" you have that many bad ones when you're worse off. It's inevitable. You're missing out on some good memories, absolutely, but you also don't exactly have to worry about things like losing a cherished pet because you couldn't afford the ludicrous cost of a surgery, having to worry about what you're going to do about rent next month because you had to replace the tires on your car, needing to uber with a shady friend-of-a-friend who winds up assaulting you because you couldn't afford to just pay for your own. It's good to not have to worry about these kinds of things. You miss out on some life experiences, absolutely, but a lot of those experiences can be really, really negative. That you can even acknowledge the privilege you're in is already a good step forward- you've earned the right to not have to yearn for that kind of life anymore!
