I took a putting class recently and I COMPLETELY understood what you mean by the dotted lines curve right/left. I never realized those three factors could be the cause for my misperception of a straight line. I got fed up and decided to step behind the ball, facing the pin and line my putter up like that.

The forearm alignment was very informative. I noticed immediately that on his putts his takeaway had very little arch and the toe looked slightly outside . After he changed his right arm, it has a slight arc to the inside. Good feedback. Like the putting mat too.

Excellent stuff TXG and Gareth, especially the dot alignment segment. It's hard to get the ball going where you want it to go when you're not seeing the correct path. Ian's set up is wonderfully sound, but (I hope referring to another video as allowed) Mike Malaska has a vid developing the same concept that Gareth is describing here. The only difference is that Malaska suggests not all golfers have the same position re: eyes over ball, that Ian has. The concept is the same, seeing the dots line up, but that different golfers will have different positions (inside/over/outside) the ball which allows them to see the line correctly. Were I back in Canada, I'd be picking up that mat, great job Gareth.

This is really good stuff Ian. Why is it so many of us don’t pay enough attention to the club we use the most, on average? Getting good with the putter and wedges is the key. Before the lockdown, I would once in a while go into Golf Town and listen to guys hammering drivers in the monitor bays and watching the yardage readout! I’m 72 now and think of balls in a different way!

Got an exputt putting simulator for Christmas. Found out I have a tendency to hit it online up to about 20 feet (with .5* l/r) but my start direction tends to move a little right the further I go with my path going more left. I'm working on it.

Gents, equal parts frightening technique complexities/considerations and fascinating helpful insights. But that’s what we love (and hate 😉) about golf. Especially putting. I’m a social golfer and despairing about my putting most of the time (friggin 3 putts!) but after this, I’m definitely more knowing and will hopefully practice and putt more accurately. Just have to find where to get Gareth’s practice mat in Oz first!

Absolutely fascinating. Thank you. I learned a lot. What if you putt looking at the hole? It works for me if I focus on a very tiny spot, maybe just one stem of grass at the edge of the hole on the side I want to aim for, relax and keep my eyes looking calmly and steadily at that precise spot. This calm eye focus is critical. If my gaze wanders, even just from one side of the hole to the other, my aim will be off. I think my brain automatically tells me what the line is and how hard to hit, the same as if I were to toss someone a golf or tennis ball, or throw a dart. My stance for the past two or three years has also been unconventional. My right foot is in a normal position, but my left foot is open to the target. My weight is about 60% on my right foot. It all started with just a relaxed, casual stance with no back strain and no concern for aiming the ball or concentrating intensely on my swing, but it seemed to work and became my actual stance. Finally, I hit the ball with a wristy strike, not with rocking the shoulders. I don't take practice strokes, just look at the slope of the green from behind and sometimes from the side, and step up and hit it. On very long putts, especially those just off the green, I recently have shifted some of the time to looking at the hole and the line I think the ball will take, then looking down at the ball and judging how long to take the club back just to make sure I make center contact.

@CalmMitYNWA3 жыл бұрын
Right handed, left eye dominant here. Started switch putting about 5 years ago and am worlds more confident standing over a putt now - can’t overstate the value of watching the ball roll where you’re aiming vs. relying on your setup line from behind the ball.

Great video. My putting issue this that when I line the ball up from down the line it looks right but when I stand over it the line on the ball appears aimed to the left. What’s the most likely cause of this? Putter is adjustable so I wonder if it’s too long/short?

For the ladder drill, does he recommend looking at the spot and dying at the number, or looking say 12” short knowing you want the ball to end a foot past? I find looking at the number and dying there is good, but on the course my putts end up dying at the hole or short
