Putting Kenya’s Slums on the Map

Great Big Story

Great Big Story

5 жыл бұрын

These days, the Internet makes it possible to travel much of the world with a simple click of a mouse. But not every place where life gets lived is cartographically represented. This leaves entire communities, particularly slums and other “informal settlements,” invisible from state actors who could implement vital infrastructure like electricity and clean water. Using their feet, GPS technology and a lot of dedication, Primož Kovačič, Isaac Motisiamosa and their teams are collaborating to put Mathare, Kenya’s second largest slum, and its people on the map.

I heard of this not too long ago in GIS class. The class was focus on the GPS system and how to accurately measure the environment. It is great to have what is now a whole neighbourhood placed on the map. It was in a documentary where they did it and it really helped the community get recognized.

Can I use this map to find the nearest public toilet? Just kidding, it's a dirty slum. People just defecate on the street, throw garbage over their shoulder, and live in filthy squalor. They could bury their garbage, but no one feels like making the effort to improve their home. There's a pretty good reason no one bothers to map these areas. There's little reason to go there, and a "street" may be just an often-changing pathway through shanties. Bless these people for making an effort, though. Letting locals know of sanitation and hygiene facilities will help them access them and improve the local quality of life. If the are improves enough, some day it might just be a poor neighborhood instead of a slum.

Hope I’m not not being a jerk but wouldn’t the “map funds” be better served to help the community have proper garbage collection. Why not help the poor residents who know and live in the area have a better quality of life, than spending money to help outsiders look at it on a map? Just saying.

The mapping is not only for foreigner. Watch this video again. It explains that the government overlooks this slums because they aren’t on any maps. With the map they can construct necessities better like a water way, power line, ect.

No point in giving away money to people that can't sustain their selves. People in poor countries or slums always reproduce way beyond the point of what their environment and own available resources can provide. Giving money - that most likely will be spend on wank - will probably end up at the same pocket it once came from. What these people need is a big pile of science, biology and history books, some discipline, clean water, healthy food, basic hygiene, shelter, the complete eradication of corruption under local and national governments and finally: a box of condoms.
