I build such a jar myself when i was young. I didn't open it, so the plants died three times before the ecosystem balanced itself. How’s the dirt jar going?
@HelloHSR Жыл бұрын
This is my personal favorite project of yours. It just shows the resilience of life in it's fullest. I've done something similar recently. Everything was frozen up until a few days ago where I live, so plants didn't sprout until then. I live in a desert, so I wondered what would happen if the jar was incredibly humid. It has a nice greenhouse effect, and seeing through the glass is especially difficult when it's cold, but that's it so far. Currently these are all the organisms I've noticed: I have an unidentified small plant about the size of a smaller pebble. It has a single leaf. I have a very small grass plant with only three blades, and the entire thing is under the dirt (I made a little cavern in the dirt, so I was hoping plants could grow both above ground and below). The last thing I've noticed is that there is a very small patch of algae between the dirt and the glass in one place. Even though it's about the size of a fridge magnet, it's the largest plant in the entire container as of right now.

I was looking at these video's to make a terrarium and it all seemed pretty delicate and complicated and I had to go and buy a bunch of weird plants that will probably die. So I like this approach much better. In my search for getting something green to survive in the house, this may be crazy enough to work. As the only thing that grows around here are weeds in the garden, I can just take the garden inside. I will let you know how it ends up (I probably won't I am made of unrealised plans)
@tecoreo Жыл бұрын
Question - did you add water to the jar? How long would you keep it open to get new carbon dioxide each day, or did you open it each day? I noticed that you got the dirt from a place that looked like a garden - something that had been well tended and obviously had a lot of life in it - do you think that affected what grew? Such a fun project!
@HomemadeEcosystems Жыл бұрын
I watered it once at the start but not anymore after that. I leave it closed most of the time. The animals and most of all the microorganisms produce carbon dioxide. The more plants that have grown in or around the soil the more things will grow, the seed banks grows over the years 😄
