The AI in the Compile developed games pretty much prefer going after one or two chains to prevent the player from building chains. Very rarely they'll do a 4-5 chain, but it almost never happens. If you're not prepared for their counterattacks it can get pretty annoying.

Actually, I've been thinking about this and it might be that the AI is meant to get as many Sun Puyos as possible, and then attack you with them. Of course, this doesn't really work.

That's actually not the case. Notice the Sun Puyo that fell in the top right. If Sun Puyo and Garbage Puyo are both set to drop in a player's field, the Sun Puyo takes priority, meaning the garbage doesn't drop until after both the Sun Puyo and the next Puyo pair are in place.

Once Sega took over the franchise, they did one good game, Puyo Pop on GBA, after that, the series IMO fell off a cliff once they started introducing newer characters, and relegating the series main protagonist, Arle, to 2nd and 3rd fiddle. I don't need Tetris in my Puyo Puyo, I have versions of Tetris if I want to play Tetris.
