Good stuff as usual. Interesting fact: 90% of all nervous system input is visual. Driving more input into the non-dominant eye shores up the opposite cortex and for a lot of people with a history of concussion/ PTSD stuff can actually improve the function of their brain. Because of science. Of course when it's time to slay go back to dominant eye. Because of freedom.

In late 89' we started with red dots... IPSC and 3 gun. Before when shooting " irons " being left handed, right eye dominant for pistol, rifle, shotgun we used an antiquated ( In an advanced class with J. Michael Plaxco ) " transparent scotch tape patch " to train the non-dom eye before ... it didn't occlude, rather it " shaded " perfect vision (strength & picture) on the dominant eye, enough that it was visible, but just enough to allow the brain & the non-dom eye to become dominant by strengthening and the brain "seeing " perfect now... lol.. works today, 32 years later. Sorry for the length, enjoyed the video and the trip down memory lane. KUDO'S brother! Seth

Effectively, my ND eye took over at around nine months... and that's when everything went waaaaay faster. Had the pleasure to start seeing up to 25yd bullets heading to the targets and seeing the cardboard IPSC targets tear as the bullets pierced them! Tachypsychia... was another result during intense training...( time appears to slow down, allowing you to put the pedal to the floor) the difference was that even though stress induced, it was almost controllable. .. around 20 to 25% maybe... research agrees with my claim... the window was very abbreviated, but when you hit it... it was that feeling AND result that there was no higher pinnacle. I was blessed to have a friend find me a gently used blemless Elbit Gen 3 thin filmed green phos PVS-14 for $1950 shipped. Low Light Innovations makes a terrific "white" filter that essentially mimics white phos in appearance with limited light transmission loss for only $25. To save money on the mount, he suggested an "Evolution Gear L4G24 NVG Mount Perfect Replica" for only $85 shipped instead of the $465 for the real one, and the quality is phenomenal. I also picked up a used Wilcox AN/PVS-14 Arm for $150 shipped down from the original $229 price. Botach has a Longfri Level IIIA ballistic helmet for only $199 that is around 3 pounds, good quality for the price and there are lots of ballistic test videos on them. I also went with the FCS AMP Headset that is a fully functioning Replica of the Ops Core AMP for only $175 shipped down from $999 for the real one. I plan on running a Disco 32 PTT with them to get my Comms squared away. Although all of this stuff is still expensive, there are ways of making NVGs and Comms realistically affordable instead of an unobtainable pipe dream. I highly encourage yourself and others to do the same. I was able to have just as functional of a setup for a little more than $2,500 that would have been $7,500+ if I had gone "Gucci" on everything.

I’ve never had issues with irons or scopes so this has to be a big factor. Thanks no one has explained this to me other than just telling me to shoot more often both eyes and “you’ll get used to it” if I can pin point the actual reason I can work on them better

My #3 son is cross eye dominant and when I was teaching him archery is when we finally figured it out. Since we learned this he as become the best shot out of my four sons. Tip with a handgun, if you are cross eye dominant, try canting the pistol at 45°. You can do this with a rifle as well but you may need a taller mount for your red dot.
@yzhou052 жыл бұрын
Canting pistol works day or night/NODs. Rifles with red dots can work with either eye during the day, but scopes not so much, especially under NODs. I find I either have to shoot rifles w/ non-dominant eye to put optic under dominant eye, or switch monocular to the non-dominant eye if I want to shoot passively. For me picking up the red dot on a pistol under monoNODs w/ my non-dominant eye is easy, probably because it takes over as the dominant eye. I do like the option of switching to white light fast (monocular on “non-shooting eye”, I shoot rifles both left and right), but not sure how to get the brightness of the optic to then be appropriate for brighter condition. I imagine this problem is still there with duals: if the dot is set for NOD use, it would be way too dim to see under white light, and vice versa… @KineticConsulting

Thanks for the educational video. I am definitely going to sign up for one of your classes. If I buy my own helmet and parts but don't have the NVG yet, can I just rent the PVS14? Do you also rent binos too? Just to be clear, which side should the PVS-14 go on, if I am cross-eyed dominant (left), when shooting pistol and carbine primarily with my right hand? It seems like the PVS14 would go on my right side (non dominant) for pistol, since I can continue using my iron sight. (I have not switched to red dot yet, since I want to dedicate a Glock-19 for that, modify it through Agency Arms, but parts are scarce still.) For carbine, it sounds like I would wear the PVS14 on the right side still, since I would not be using my red dot instead relying on the IR laser. I recently bought the ATPIAL-C, gradually accumulating the components for night vision, as I save up and as they become available. This does raise an interesting question though: switch shoulders using an INV would be as cumbersome as trying to do so with a magnifier flipped off to the side...? It would seem like binos would be easier overall, albeit much more expensive....
@KineticConsulting4 жыл бұрын
Yup, I have both to rent for my classes. As for which eye you will have to try both and see what suits you best. You can "what if" all the scenarios in the world and find a downside to almost anything. Look at what you mainly use NV for and set yourself up best to perform those.

If you are a regular soldier with an acog/regular height m68 and pvs14, the non dominant side is the way to go.
@danielney62 жыл бұрын
Why
@not_your_business6662 жыл бұрын
@@danielney6 because the gear you get in most conventional combat units is nearly useless for passive aiming and you can get in trouble for not using your peq15 while shooting under nods. So you are better off not ruining your dominant eye's night vision by NVG. Unfortunately the larp stuff you see on youtube is mostly being done by less than 1% of the military. On the bright side if we end up fighting russians exposing yourself with IR laser won't be a huge deal. Even some of better nato troops are poorly trained on night combat comparing to americans, let alone our potential adversaries who's night capabilities range from limited to non existent.
@nickadkins7765 Жыл бұрын
@@not_your_business666 I get it if you're in the military. There are limitations to what you can or can't do. However, as a civilian I don't agree with that philosophy. Forget an ACOG. Run an eotech or a T2 with a 3x magnifier and you're good for close range and around 300ish yards pretty easily. Additionally I won't get in trouble for passively aiming and not using IR illumination as a civilian, and as he explained in the video the parallax would be a non issue either while using your dominant eye.

This is my biggest question about night vision and cqb?? Being quiet enough for someone to not know where you are and also being in a pitch black environment… why would it be not as effective to go with white light ? Is it because they may know where you are but not exactly where you are and white light can give away your signature rather quickly ? Is that the only reason though I do a huge benefit to to being able to see in the woods or across a field and see thing might not otherwise see but in Cbq ? Is stealth that realists and or the true key is it as I would expect that speed and precision are most important? I guess part understanding what I’m asking about is what is then negative to night vision verses just going without it
@RunningWithSauce Жыл бұрын
I take nightly walks with my Nods. When its very dark out, with little light pollution from city lights but is moonlit can see out a few hundred yards easily with no supplemental illumination. Last night on a trail in the woods I stepped off trail as 3 people approached from 200 yards out. It took them until about 10 feet to notice me. Two dudes and their mom out for a 10pm stroll in a wooded park. With a focused IR I could have lit them up way farther out and noticed their location. As far as use if needing to engage if they were an enemy force, I could theoretically step into the woods and ambush if that was not a stroll and instead actual interception of a patrol who had no Night vision. Likely they'd be using white light which of course would see you. The key is they likely wouldn't see you at distance before you see them and you could find cover and drop on them, etc. Its not likely someone is going to be using a high powered white light and catch you out from distance if you already know they are there and can move when needed. If you have nods go for walks in the woods carefully. You'll note if you can remain quiet without bustin sticks and crashing leaves, in very dark woods you'll be able to sneak up on quite a few animals, My favorite moment was in a poorly lit park getting the jump on a family of raccoons raiding a garbage. As far as not knowing where you are... people need to be careful with that. Theres a perception that because you yourself have NVGs that nobody can you see you in the dark in CQB. This isn't true. The human eye adjusts to the dark very well and often as people are backlit by small lights in rooms etc, their movement can be seen. Last is NVGs do not work in pitch black without supplemental IR illumination. For breaching - your guess is correct, you need the element of surprise for sure AND you want to cut power so the lights don't come on. Lots to consider there. Someone for sure could hear you, suspect you coming etc and light the place up with a surefire and easily get PID. Its not a superpower and requires a lot of tactic and training to be effective.

Yes, I use that setup and many other people do as well. You don't actually have to cant the rifle in front of the tube because you will have so much elevation (in fact it is specifically advised not to as the sight height offset will exaggerate your POI shift). Zero the red dot parallel with the scope POA so the POI will always be below the red dot which is easy to remember since that is our natural instinct when shooting with rifles at close range anyways.

@@AmazonWebService98 If he hasn't answered you yet via PM, you want clear glass (minimal glass tint) and NV setting in order to dim the reticle enough to see the target beyond your POA (not really necessary at close range under 50 yards though, especially if you are shooting under IR illumination in which case the dot has to be almost visible brightness in order to not be washed out). Aimpoint micro is best if you care about weight(buy used), any Eotech is best if you want a large window. However in truth most chinese red dots that are only $20 also work well, as they tend to have settings on the lower end of visible brightness which are sufficient for shooting under IR illumination, and don't washout the image without. The key issue is they have very low battery life of only 3 days unless you get something like a holosun. You want it mounted high and forward (I just mount the red dot on top of a scope, which also serves as an assist in daytime as I find target with my red dot and can engage, but if I think I may have to apply holdovers I just drop my head down and the target is right in the scope FOV (zero the red dot parallel to the scope zero, so POI will always be below the red dot and not some funky over under bs), or use rail risers stacked on top of each other, a rail mount adapter on an A2 carry handle, or gucci stuff like the Unity micro riser. Depending on this setup, you might choose a micro red dot, or a large one like a Eotech for the larger window so you don't have to get your monocular fully behind the gun to see your POA. Personally I stick with micro because again, I mount them on top of a scope. I have tried an eotech and while it is beginner friendly, if you plan to regularly use and train with your NVD setup like you should, you will find this advantage is negligible unless you really need to be able to cowitness iron sights with the naked eye (larger window allows the Eotech to use a smaller riser than a micro and still be night vision ready)

Cool video. What is your experience with long term use of monocular and even binocular NV devices? No eye issues? Is the effect similar to looking at a computer screen for extended time? Thanks for the content.

With a 14, there are a few different things that can happen. I prefer the dual system for less fatigue on the eyes and some other stuff. I think it's similar to the fatigue on a computer but definitely different.

It's closer to looking through a binoculars or spotting scope at day for a long period of time. Also most have a gain adjustment which lets you adjust the brightness settings. Although even on max brightness it isn't as bad as a computer screen.

i have a situation. ive been wanting to get into night vision. but im having the same issue i had when i wanted to get into scoped rifles. i am cross eye dominant. and i dont know which eye i should locate the nvg on any ideas? also im starting to wonder if i am truly cross eye dominant. because my issue is truly that i cant independently close my left eye. i can for the right. ive used the eye patch or blindfold trick (where you blind one eye with an eye patch) and i was able to focus and shoot great with both eyes. but when i try to shoot normal i get the cross eye dominance issue again. any suggestion.

@DaveSmith-cp5kj3 жыл бұрын
@@KineticConsulting Yup. For anyone else having issues with eye dominance, you can change it. I used to be right eye dominant but the first time I did airsoft I realized how important it was to be able to switch shoulders to optimize use of cover. What I did was wink my dominant eye (if you can't wink, hold down the lid with your finger and tense your face until you isolate the muscle to keep the lid closed. "Smirking" can help until you learn to better isolate the eyelid) occasionally throughout the day and after about a week you will have more favoritism to the other eye. Then switch it back. Do this for about a month and then both eyes will stabilize to near equal dominance. Now I can shoot irons on handgun from either shoulder as crisp as day, and with a monocular setup I can mentally snap instantly from visible light spectrum to IR on command without any squinting or manipulating the mount. You will get a massive headache the first month you train this though. You will be able to see past close range objects easier than normal and that will really mess with your spatial awareness for a short period of time until your brain stops being drunk.

@KineticConsulting6 ай бұрын
@@magdumpdaddy solid setup.
@turnitdowntyler4 жыл бұрын
I use a G24 and Wilcox J-arm. Used to switch between eyes. But it took me about a week to determine which eye I wanted to use. And it ultimately came down to which eye is my dominant eye when shooting with a pistol. When the red dot optic comes up to my dominant eye (my right) im making hits just as accurate and just as fast as during the day. That was a deal breaker for me when using my left eye. Kept trying to find the dot and losing time. Also, passive aiming on my rifles is pretty easy with a lower 1/3 mount and the PVS14 doesn't get in the way of the optic if its mounted as far forward on the upper before the handguard. Hope this helps someone who has the same issues.
@rdsmith3344 жыл бұрын
I struggle with passive on a 1/3 mount, and can't get consistent with it, much less fast. For me, an easy (cheap) fix was trying a dot mounted on top of a carry handle. Super easy passive aiming.
@turnitdowntyler4 жыл бұрын
@@rdsmith334 interesting! It took some reps getting used to the 1/3. I thought experimenting with a 1.93 or 2.26 but I wanted to be able to keep in line with all my setups and adding 5 1.93’s to the collection wasn’t financially attractive.
@rdsmith3344 жыл бұрын
@@turnitdowntyler same here. The financial issues of switching risers over is daunting. Plus holdovers, etc. But I would suggest throwing a carry handle on top, and a chinesium carry handle pic rail, just to try it out. I don’t know what riser height that combo equates to though. But now that I’ve got a decent handle on passive (with this setup), I need to give lower 1/3 another try.

@vhfgamer2 жыл бұрын
@@Chicano_pistolero When you use a rifle enough times, and you have trained yourself, it will naturally settle into the correct shooting position when you shoulder it. That means the sights are already lined up. Coincidentally, this is the same concept sport clay shooters use, because shotguns have notoriously simple sights. So combine that with the flashlight you're probably using to see your target in the first place, and you're golden. If you're not using a flashlight, then how do you even see your target? If there is enough light to see your target, there's enough light to see your sights. If you're using a night vision optic, then obviously the regular iron sights don't apply.
