Some extra tips I've found photoscanning plastic figurines. If you want to scan an object that is reflective and contains a consistent flat colour (usually very bad for photoscanning) cover it in baby powder. This adds micro details to the mesh which helps the scan while being easy enough to clean up afterwards.

Very good one, also you can use polarizing light. Also instead of baby powder you can use something like watercolors dispersed with a toothbrush for example. Anything goes really as long as it is uneven and adds contrast, mud, spray paint etc.

Hah! Is this photogrammetry day on KZbin or what? I just finished and put up my own video, also using Reality Capture, and some other software. Great summary Clint, especially about merging together point clouds. It's a great way, regardless of software, to get a better quality mesh at the end. 🙂

Bryan Mitchell huh? Reality Capture didn’t pay me anything, nor are they a sponsor of my video in any sense. I paid for all my scans myself. I did get a license from 3DF Zephyr to their software, but they also had no insight or oversight into my video 🤷‍♂️ Before you question someone’s objectivity it helps to do your research first 😉

v b read what I wrote to Bryan above, I can’t speak for Clint, but my video is not a “commercial” and all I said in my video are my own opinions, nothing anyone has told me to say. Question objectivity all you want, but questioning things just because you have trust issues, and not actually valid concerns, seems like a good way to go through life paranoid and unhappy 🤷‍♂️

Nice scans, Clint! You're absolutely right, photogrammetry can become addictive. I always like to compare it with shooting on film- you go out exploring and capture something cool, return home and start to feel that rush of excitement once you sit down and start processing your images, and finally see what you got- and when it all turns out, hopefully you're happy with it!

I´m starting with the same set up and been using mesh room with nice results but CapReality seems to have more options, I´m going to look into that. I think it´s crucial to define the object and the area up front in your workflow. Scanning people outside will give you huge messy meshs of your sorroundings otherwise.

This is a great resource, thank you so much for all the effort put into this. Do you have a recommendation how to do a pbr conversion for the textures? My initial idea would be to use color selection in a tool such as Substance Painter to split up the different materials from the original color map and give them their respective material properties (amount of roughness, metalness, etc.). Do you even typically do that or do you often find the basic color texture to be sufficient to create a believable asset for a realistic environment?

Hopefully I'm not too late to this, but what I do is to bake a high to low normal map also, and do a basic roughness map using a colorramp to roughness in Blender. That way, when I bring the model into Painter I have 3 basic maps. I'll then tweak them like you said, giving each material it's properties using tons of masks. It can be a little laborious, but the results are amazing.

Fantastic video. Used meshroom with subpar results, then went with 3DF Zephyr, though I should give this software a shot. great tips.. I often hear people using like low number of scans, sort of making a point that you don't need that much, but from a few reality capture tutorials it's clear you need as many as possible, OK, I can see speculation going as the credit is based on number of points/pictures.. how "much" would this asset be in the end?

Just curious. Have you attempted to use reality capture to capture a whole interior space using a camera? I feel like a lidar scanner like a Leica might be a better solution for this, but I'm trying to find a workflow to do this with just a camera. Do you think doing 2 concentric circles in a room from varying heights, while reversing the direction I'm facing in the room, to capture all detail would be a solution while adding varying parallax as I get closer to an object might be a solution? Then just maybe setting a lot of control points via brightly colored tracking markers I have set around said room? I have used poly cam but the results aren't up to par with reality capture. My end goal is to import a scan into Unreal engine to use as a set on an Led volume. Thanks in advance!
@davidsudd
@davidsudd Жыл бұрын
Hey Thomas - absolutely you can do this. I've captured some interiors with incredible detail with photo-only scans. That said, if you can ALSO capture with a decent lidar scanner (and be sure to have it grab textures) you can combine both datasets and get the best of both. Photos alone can go a long way though but you will need to be disciplined in your capture - much more involved than walking around an object or turntable. Also likely will want to utilize a tripod and choose exposure carefully - multiple brackets if needed to capture full range, etc. You can run tests in RC for free so I'd suggest start by trying and seeing what you get. Your suggested approach is more or less what I do.. Circle around the room, back to the wall facing in, different heights, orbit around things in the room at varying heights, make sure you have a camera 'path' to go from wide to close up and try to think of a giving a lot of overlap and path for solver to join all the photos. If you have a big jump in position make sure you have a lot of overlap with other 'photo paths' so it can solve. Avoiding having to connect the dots later will make it all work much better. Try to get at least 3 or so angles on any feature you want, so if moving accross beamed ceiling make try to visualize every 'face' having at least a couple photos of coverage. Good Luck!
