So do you need to have a preamp in order to make the sound louder then to just hooking the turntable straight into the speakers.

That is not the only reason for a Phono Preamp, Robert. Yes it does amplify the signal at midband about by about X500, however the key function along with amplification is equalization of the output signal of your magnetic pickup phonograph stylus. It cuts frequencies above midband and boosts frequencies below midband, each end at the rolloff rate of 6 decibels as the frequency doubles (termed by the experts as "-6db/octave rolloff rate"). The resulting signal into your main amplifier is at line level (about 500-1000 millivolts RMS), clean and flat to within 2 decibels from about 20 Hz up to 20 Khz. My PP555 works perfectly as advertised! And at a modest price of about 20 bucks a pop! Remember, it is important to connect the ground wire to the turntable ground, or you will get lots of 60 Hz humm! I am glad to see the resurrection of vinyl as well as the availability of neat little gadgets like this preamp, since most stereo receivers don't have phono input capabilities. Back in the day (mid sixties) my first audio design/built project at DeVry Tech was a phono preamp using two 2N414 pnp transistors. Nowadays, units like this little beauty probably use low noise, integrated op amps to do the job (never checked). Hope I didn't bore you with my trip down memory lane!

What if my turntable doesn't have a ground wire? Then WHAT?!
@trashyaudiophile73014 жыл бұрын
Probably because you have a internal switchable amplifier. My old dump find record player has it. My Heyday does not. Don't worry about it.

Don't forget your GROUND WIRE! BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

where does the ground wire connect to your amp or the back of the turntable ,i tried either way but still get the hummmmmmm
@kaput4508 жыл бұрын
It goes from the turntable to the amp or preamp.

will there be sound volume difference with ground cable connected?
@kaput4507 жыл бұрын
the noise volume should be significantly lower. The overall volume won't change, just the quality of the sound.

You need to feed the pre-amp output (known as "line level") into to a basic amplifier, Francisco. A basic amplifier has an input impedance of about 10, 000 ohms. Connecting directly into phones or speaker will grossly overload the preamp such that the preamp will not produce nearly enough of a signal to be audible with a low impedance device such as speakers of headphones. Even an set of amplified computer speakers could be used to amplify the preamp output to audibilty, as they are intended to take any line level stereo signal and boost it to an audible level. Otherwise, a more sophisticated stereo receiver could be used, depending how much you want to spend.
