Nice video. You don't have to wait til the water starts to boil to put the coffee filter stem in the pot. All this can be done as soon as the cool water is added. (avoid the potential danger of splashing boiling water) Also to place the coffee-filled glass filter into the water-filled pot - it would be much easier to do it before the aluminum lid is put on. (gives you more glass tube to hold on to). And to those who ask about using this pot on a gas vs electric stovetop. Part of its name is "flameware". It was intended for a gas stove use. Later in its production a small metal trivit was introduced for use with an electric stovetop. But as Dave demonstrated here - they are really not necessary. If you don't have the ability to get a coarse ground coffee - on line you can find a paper disk filter made by Melitta in packs of 100 for anywhere from $1 - $3 ea.

I agree this is the best way, just a little suggestion, after your 7 min, use a sifter to pour your first cup and then into your thermos , this is a safety way so you don't have to deal with the hot glass parts , that could be hard to replace. I've been collecting this coffee pot for years and the parts are getting harder to come by, although I have enought parts to do me till my dying day. Another real coffee lover!

It was heavily featured in the television show, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. Mary always had it on the stove was always offering anyone that came into the house, a cup of coffee from it, most of the scenes took place in the kitchen. It was always there on the stove, this would have been 1974 to 1976, of course, Mary would have been married in the late 60s when she would have purchased or been gifted. The coffee pot. Which is fairly accurate in the 70s. I remember the neighbor lady always had one of these on her gas stove.

Thank you for the instructional video, i bought the same pyrex percolator at a resell shop simply because it reminded me of my mom making coffee when i was young, but after i got home i realized that i had no idea how to use it, being my mother past away years ago i cant ask her, so once again thank you very much for showing me how, it's the best cup of coffee i ever had.

The grate on your gas burner acts as a separator (as does the glass on an electric smooth top range) you do not need to put anything else in between it and the gas flame. You only need one of these separators if you are using an electric COIL burner.

Enjoyed you informative video very much. Answered every question needed to fully understand all aspects of how to use this amazing Pyrex Percolator. I just found one on my local online marketplace and I can hardly wait to use it. I remember seeing this little guy in action but I can't remember if it was my Mom or Grand mother that made coffee this way, either way it is beyond cool. Thanks for taking the time to make this video, others are so annoying but yours is great. Watched it several times and shared with many friends as well. You're the best!

Hi Dave, thanks for your video. Very helpful. I too bought a Pyrex Percolator in a thrift shop a few days ago. (we call them Op shops here in Australia) Made a terrible mess over the stove and now realize I was doing it all wrong. Coarser grind needed. And - i didnt boil water first - thanks will try that again for the next batch. People like you are a welcome addition to this world!!!

I just found one at the thrift shop today.. by far the best $3.00 I spent in a long time. Going by the wadded up newspaper- It looks like it hasn't been used since 1987, only thing missing is the 2nd aluminum lid, other then that its complete. It works like a dream, but I'm using it for tea.

I don't know if this topic was covered. I am 60 years old and have clear memories of this kind of percolator. Here are the facts about how to use it on what burners. They are safe on a gas, direct flame burner. They are VERY unsafe directly on an electric coil burner. The pots originally came with a wire heat difuser to be used on electric coils with BIG warning not to use on electric without this diffuser or the pot can (and does) break. It happened to me many years ago-ignored the warning

Thank you for sharing how you use your Pyrex Glass Coffee Pot. My Father had one that he made the Best Coffee on the weekends. He was very particular in the way he made coffee for us. He would fill the glass pot with fresh cold water, then filled the basket with freshly ground coffee. Then sprinkle a little Salt, and if he was going to make Scrambled Eggs, he would put the Egg Shells on top of the coffee grounds. Then turn on the Electric stove and before we knew it, the coffee was ready. The smell of the coffee was amazing. And there was never any grounds in our coffee and the taste was superb! I used this marvellous coffee for years, but unfortunately one day the Glass Stem broke. I searched for years to find another one, but was unsuccessful. So I then bought a Drip Coffee pot, but the taste of the coffee wasn't the same. It didn't matter what Brand of Coffee I tried. I continued searching for another Glass Pyrex Coffee Pot and eventually found one at a Consignment store. Over the years have had to buy several Drip Coffee Pots, and just yesterday, another of these Drip Coffee pots, sprung a leak and there was a mess. I thought okay, I am going back to using using my Corning Ware or my Glass Pyrex Coffee Pots. This morning I tried the Corning Ware Coffee Pot and I must say, the Coffee tasted fabulous. Tomorrow, I will pull out my Glass Pyrex Coffee pot. I may not bother putting any more money out on the Electric Drip Coffee Pots. They last for a year or so, and that is a waste of money, to keep having to buy another one.

George, thanks for the tip! Although safer than electric coil stoves, the ceramic glass top range in our home can suffer from hotspots as well. Although I'm happy to report that I haven't had any trouble, a heat spacer is ideal for any electric range.

This is the exact same percolator my parents used all through my youth (I'm 66), and the percolator my husband and I used in the early years of our marriage. Then along came the automatic drip coffee makers that were quick and convenient, and we all said goodbye to a real cup of coffee. I feel badly for young people today who have never experienced what a real cup of coffee tastes like. Percolated coffee is an entirely different taste experience and the reason I grew up loving coffee. You have inspired me to seek out a good percolated to use. The only criticism I would have of the old Pyrex pot you are using is the aluminum basket parts, as I understand that scientists are concerned about the use of aluminum in cooking perhaps contributing to alzheimers, and aluminum has been long known to be neurotoxic, with mounting evidence that chronic exposure is a factor in many neurological diseases, including dementia, autism, and Parkinson's disease. There are many all stainless steel percolators available, so, if you intend to use a percolator long term, I would look for one of those.
@someonespadre

This is the best video I have found so far. I have two stainless steel pots, one Rapid Brew (which is prone to overflowing if the coffee is too fine or there is too much in the basket) and a National Silver pot I found in a thrift store for under $3. The National Silver (it is stainless steel, not silver) is a better design, it overflows into the pot but I haven't had a problem with the grounds getting in the pot. A lot of the video makers leave the pump and basket in the pot when pouring which they then have to strain the coffee. Pulling the pump and basket out then leaving the last quarter inch of coffee in the pot results in no grounds in the cup. There is no need for filters or straining coffee. I haven't boiled the water first, I'll try that. My Mother made coffee in a metal stove top percolator in the 1960s and 1970s. I think my parents had an electric percolator in the later 1970s. I used a Farberware electric percolator in the early 1990s until it died. I got interested in stove top percolating about 5 years ago when I got the Rapid Brew at a hardware store. I went to all percolating when my expensive Cuisinart tank drip brewer died after only a few years. I like the fact that it takes skill, they take up less space and there is no hidden tubes full of scale and growing gunk. It takes 20 to 30 minutes to make a pot of coffee.

One of these is featured in "This is Coffee" (1961), but they were selling the same model as late as '81-'82. I've seen newspaper ads as early as 1954 for this model. A taller "discontinued model" with straight '7' black handle was advertised in 1953.

Very interesting...never knew to boil first. I love using my pot....saved it from my parents' house...such good memories of my Dad setting up the pot every AM. One thing I would point out....when you put the top on...twist it so the knobs on either side of the underside of the lid will hold the top on when you pour.... Will definitely try this method!

Sorry for the later reply, friend. And thanks for the compliments! The countertop in our home is original, and was installed in 1956 or 57. We've owned the home now for about 22 years, and it's stood up amazingly well. I've always loved simple tile countertops, and tile work in general for that matter, and would definitely recommend/prefer it over granite myself.

Thanks for posting. I didn't realize that you didn't need to use a paper filter. I've found some filters in the camping section of stores that fit the percolator they have a hole in the middle for the stem. Note to new users: Fill the basket like in the video...on the counter. If you try to fill it in the pot, grounds will spill through the hole,

Good vid, Dave. I’m still tweeting my brew time and measure of coffee. You mention why you take the time to enjoy your cup a bit of an old fashion way and that’s good. I went to this type percolator to get away from all the plastic leaching into the coffee from the modern methods and so I started with a stainless stove top percolator. And fortunately, I have a loving niece who saw my posts of getting back to basics and she offered me the Pyrex six cupper for which I’m grateful. I cringed, knowing the cost and rarity of these glass parts when you had the stem and basket standing in a saucer. I little trust myself with letting it stand free for fear these old hands and eyes would knock it over. I take every precaution to keep these parts low in the sink when cleaned and put the stem into the pot with water, then basket, coffee, top basket lid, etc. I put it all together and start boil. Given your looking back to your future in coffee drinking, you should try getting into cast iron cooking which we’ve done for the last fifteen years, avoiding nonstick all together. Leaching from these Teflon like pots and pans correlates with the increase in autism and associated illnesses/conditions. Good luck. Sorry, maybe TMI. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO

Water never wets the grounds enough and at times overflows, though my water measure is correct. In contrast my rapid brew stainless perc rocks ..Not sure what the issue is. Btw watching your video closely I see a fatal flaw. You my friend are using the stem of a 4 cup in your 6 cup. that's why water is touching the basket. Baskets are the same size in all models but stems differ.

Thank you for the information! I'll have to check for spares in my mom's old storage cupboard. I assume you mean your grounds basket is overflowing? I experience this as well when my grind is too fine. Even the regular grind of Folgers, for example, is too fine for this perc. I tend to use the coarsest setting when I buy my beans from a store with a grinder, or ask for a thick coarse grind from my local roaster.

I have several of these from 4 cup to 9 cup. I also have the matching Pyrex tea pot. These are all I've used since the 70's. Nothing compares to the coffee you can brew in these. I always use filtered water and fresh ground bean coffee. Also, I don't know ANYONE who EVER put the pump in AFTER the water started boiling. I've never even heard of doing it this way. I would worry about putting room temperature glass into 212-degree water, not to mention you could be burned by the 300 Plus degree steam coming off of the water. Also, the basket should NOT touch the water. Also NO ONE EVER takes the stem out while it's hot before pouring your coffee. There is absolutely no need to do so. After you learn how to use this setup properly, you need to make another video.

@Penelope Alexander I don't think you have to boil it first, I just find I have the best results when I preheat the water. I shoot for a brew temp of about 200 degrees.

Yes, it sounds like you have the 4-cup model that percs, well, four cups at a time. :) You definitely want a coarse grind with this unit; too fine and it won't perc right and the basket will overflow.

Why don't you put the basket in at the beginning?

@lumwu You don't need to use high heat. You need only enough heat to maintain 200 degree Farenheit water temperature. I use mine directly on a glass stovetop, but I'd probably want a seperator on a natural gas or electric coil stove.

I have since manage to find a replacement lid off of esty.com, when i didn't have the lid, I pretty much made own lid using aluminum foil (with punched holes using a fork) or a coffee filter (turned upside down and tucked inside the basket) the whole purpose of the lid is to keep the water flowing on the grinds. After countless batches of tea and coffee- In my opinion the upside down filter works better then the original lid.

Yes you can, but make sure to clean the basket thoroughly if you brewed coffee as coffee tends to be oilier then tea. As soon as it starts to perculat shut off the heat source and let it do its thing, you don't want to over boil it, flavors will change.

Hey Dave, Thanks for posting this video! We just got a pyrex percolator and are about to make our first pot. We would be lost without these instructions. Do you know if its fine to use the percolator on an electric stove top that's not a glass top?

I don't think it would be an issue; just don't use your highest heat setting. The water will percolate at 200 degrees F, so medium heat should suffice. As I show in my video, I use a very low heat once the water has been brought up to 200 degrees and percolation starts.

The holes in the Pyrex version must be bigger than the one in the CorningWare because my filter basket always fills up with water and overflows from the top and I end up with a few grounds coming out. Not enough to really worry about, but I feel like it's not brewing it as strong as I like because it's not dripping through fast enough. I tried it with or without a coffee filter in it to try to get it to flow through better without the grounds clogging it to no avail. I fear the basket holes just aren't big enough. Even when it's done brewing it takes forever for the remaining water in the basket to drip out the bottom.

Put lid on. it will come to boil faster. Wetting the bottom disc before putting coffee in will mitigate grounds from falling through. Wait for the coffee to finish brewing and settle, 5 minutes. Nothing is better than perc coffee esp from this pot. I like stronger coffee so I'll perc for 10 minutes on super low heat, just barely enough to facilitate boiling.

The stem for your Pyrex must have been originally from a 4 cup Pyrex. The stem is too short for your pot. A Pyrex percolator basket will never sit below the metal band and will never touch the water at the top water fill line (in your case 6 cups). I have seen this a number of times when people buy these used Pyrex percolators. The stems break and gets replaced with a stem not meant for that particular model pot.The basket top will be level with the top of the coffeepot with the correct stem

David do you have the triangular shaped met metal wire that the pot sits on? If you use an electric stove, the instructions say don't put the pot directly on the electric stove. Place the wire under the pot then place on the pot in the burner. Btw I have the 9 cup perc. I just love this thing.

Hi,I'm interested in buying one of the vintage corningware enamel percolators and I have a glass stove like yours and was wondering if you think it would work just as well and also wondering if you've ever had experience with an enamel percolator on your stove?

That's not how you use it. You can place the basket in before placing it o the stove. No need to boil the water first. You do not need to remove the stem and coffee basket before pouring. I know. I grew up with it.

I'm also missing the 2d lid, so how did you compensate for that? Didn't all of the coffee grinds spill into the coffee? Did you put a paper filter on top instead?

Sorry for a late reply, friend. I don't think brewing two or four cups at a time would hurt the unit. Pyrex is good glass and highly resistant to temperature shock. Due to the volume of the 6-cup pot though, it may make temperature control a bit more difficult; with just a thin layer of water it can be brought to a boil quickly. Keep your temp stable around 200 degrees for best taste.

I just now found one of these coffee kettles on the street while walking my dog. How do I use it? I have a gas burner and I can place the hot plate over the burner so it doesn't have direct contact with flame. Can I just set it onto the hot plate over the burner and turn the heat up to high or does it need to be on medium heat? Do I need one of those coil separators between the hot plate and percolator?
