I went back to my childhood home that had been vacant for nearly 20 years where we had a huge row of these along the driveway and these were the only thing that had survived a many year long drought in the high desert on maybe 5 inches or less of rain per year. Extremely tough plants. I dug up some to take to my new home for my kids to enjoy watching humming birds on them like I did.

Helpful to know what, how and why you are fertilizing your new and already established plants. I've always enjoyed my garden, but never knew the importance or need to fertilize (that much)! Thank you for your continued insight, help and enthusiasm...it's empowering for us wannabees. :)

I was only able to snatch up one of these in my area - yikes! These are so popular and hard to keep in stock! I’m so thankful I got my one and hope to add on next year. My neighbor said he has tried to winter these 3 years in a row and no success. :( We are in NW Illinois and zone 5. I’m thinking would it be a good idea to put a styrofoam cover on it when it turns cold? If anyone has tried, please let me know! Thanks!

I planted one last year and it did not come back. zone 6a. Although, we had a rocken crazy cold winter so perhaps I'll give it another shot.

Try adding a bit of winter protection around the plant, you are right on the edge of the plant being hardy for you, and a hard winter for its first year was probably tough on it!

Mine do best close to the house on the side the east side. They bloom like crazy even though they don’t get full sun. The ones out in the garden are iffy. Some winter ok, some do not. I love the popsicles!

Are your red hot poker plants from Proven Winners? That could be a difference, in addition to the amount of water and sun each plant receives....
@carlalakins
@carlalakins 2 жыл бұрын
I had a family member share a shovel full of red hot pokers 10 years ago. They had them for about 10 years when they shared them with me. They bloom nicely every year for long time. I have them in full sun. By mid afternoon they are in speckled shade due to trees near by. I sprinkle slow release fertilizer for flowers at beginning of growing season. Mother Nature does the watering, but when she holds back... they are in an area covered by the sprinkler. I'm in zone 7b, Peidmont of NC.

Do you need to deadhead the splent blooms or do they just die back?

Are you suppose to dead head them if/when the flowers fall over? We planted one about 2 weeks ago, it has new shoots coming up, but some of the old ones fell over..

For new plants know that they have gone through a bit of stress during the transplanting into your landscape. Yes, trim the older flowers and know that each year they will look better and better, reaching maturity in 3 years or so. Enjoy!

When a bloom is spent what do you do? Do you cut the stalk with the bloom? How far down? Do you not do anything to them (do new stalks come up with new blooms?). I’ve watched a number of videos about kniphofia but haven’t seen this information presented. Thanks for any info you can provide.
@ProvenWinnersYouTube
@ProvenWinnersYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
There are care instructions at the bottom of all of our plant information pages, www.provenwinners.com/plants/kniphofia/pyromania-flashpoint-red-hot-poker-kniphofia-hybrid WIth regard to spent blooms, trim them off if they are unsightly, but this will not necessarily encourage new blooms. We hope this helps.
