Too bad you didn't mention the fate of his corpse. Alcyoneos, the son of Antigonos, took the severed head of Pyrrhos and brought it to his father as a prize. When Antigonos saw the head, he chastised Alcyoneos, calling him barbarous and impious. He proceeded to find the rest of Pyrrhos' body and burned it with honors befitting a king. Alcyoneos managed to redeem himself quickly, as he found the son of Pyrrhos, Helenos, amongst the survivors at the gates of Argos, but in a pitiful state. He brought him to his father, and Antigonos this time congratulated him for his noble conduct, although he did pointed out that he should have given Helenos new clothes since his were stained with blood and mud. After tending to Helenos, Antigonos sent him back to his home.

The Romans performed diplomatic miracles to keep their allies. They still had the manpower to field armies that would not allow Hannibal to operate freely, while avoiding battle with him. Where Hannibal was not, the Roman commanders were able to achieve victories. Hanibal couldn't be everywhere. At the same time, the Carthaginians did not have so many good generals who would represent a level similar to their Roman counterparts (in Iberia they lost few times). That was victory of The state and its system, capable of generating almost inexhaustible resources. Hannibal's greatest deficiency was not his lack of strategic planning, but his own state's lack of capitalizing on his victories. The only thing Hannibal could have done differently was to try to slaughter Rome's population in the city itself. The late Roman Republic was unbeatable. Pyrrhus was going to eventually lose against Rome during that time no matter what he did. Rome was like a modern nation in efficiently recruiting soldiers and at the time of the Republic its people were fanatically devoted to serving in the army. Also, Rome made citizens of many conquered people to add more recruits for its army. Rome quickly added new tactics to match what its enemies did. Lastly, the city of Rome could not be taken due to its defenses and because Rome always had armies in the field. In the era of the late Republic Pyrrhus and Hannibal were arguably the greatest generals in the Mediterranean area. It didn’t matter. They could not beat Rome.

ye, he couldve made a mighty greek state, that was a barrier to rome, instead of greece being overun by romans and becoming nothing more than a colony of other powers for 2000 years

Killed by something he missed his entire life,a mothers love. Poor lost orphan,who caused so many womenfolks' tears, such an ironically poetic death.

After this battle, the city, called by the romans Maleventum, which had a non-latin origin, but meant for the people of Rome Unfortunate-event (mal-eventum),had its name changed to Ben-eventum "Good, fortunate-event). And kept its name till our age.

One of my favourite series on the channel. Espeacially his confrontation with the Romans and their much more adaptive fighting style is fascinating. I'd love a series about the establishment of Roman dominance over the Greek world and Asia Minor until the defeat of the Seleucids.

did they cover his Anabasis?
@ifzyk80845 жыл бұрын
@@solaire2904 no, I think its only magnesia and the western front rather than the eastern front. If I remember correctly, I think they did mention his siege of Balkh in Bactria as well, but that's all BTW sorry I took so long to reply, currently painting my home

A really stunning development in this telling is that Sparta sent troops to aid their deadly, long time, always, eternal enemy Argos. They must have really been angry at Pyrrhos!

Like Charles XII of Sweden Pyrrhus can't seem to stop when he first get started.
@bkjeong43025 жыл бұрын
Huganis That applies to most conquerors. Either they actually do conquer everything and then have their empire fall apart into multiple empires after they die (Alexander, Genghis Khan, etc), or they don’t stop and eventually get their teeth punched in (Napoleon, Charles XII, Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan....)

Nazi Germany betrayed USSR tho and Napoleon betrayed Spain. Their actions were logistical nightmare which literally led to the decimation of their power.

@MTCoblivsicas123454 жыл бұрын
I think Pyrrhus is just as impressive as Hannibal. Defeated Rome twice got close to it, defeated Carthage, Macedonians, took on the Spartans which were the elite soldiers of Greece. Like Hannibal he knew how to gain a victory but not how to use it or his army was so depleted he just gave up.
