The Reising smg was also in limited use by the army. My grandfather was in the 82nd field artillery part of the 1st cavalry and he carried a Reising during his time in the pacific from Los Negros island to the flying columns and the battle of Manila. He curred the rusting problem by shelacing the outside of it

I'm fairly certain advertisers do have control over what content their ads can be played on. After that, it appears to be a combination of random as well as bot-driven. For example, I watch a lot of RV related videos, so it's not surprising one of the ads that popped up during this one was from an RV vendor. That said, what the money the creator gets for each ad is incredibly small.

There’s still WW2 M2s out in Army’s innovatory today. A little background I was in the Army for 6 years as a 91F smallarms/artillery repairman, sense I had to repair and do services for the weapons that the 11Bang bangs and CAV Scouts broke gave me the opportunity see a lot of different weapons. I personally worked on 2 in Afghanistan in 2014 it was “theater equipment” AKA it stays there on the FOB as units rotate in and out I believe that’s a big testament the Brownings design. I ran into 1 in FT Campbell KY in 2nd brigade it went through the A1 upgrade program so it had a quick change barrel. Had also found 2 in camp Humphreys south Korea they weren’t upgraded though.

The Machine Gun registry being opened up again would be great. Take for instance that Woman in the Northeast who found an unregistered STG44 in her attic and turned it into the Police. The Police were going to destroy it but managed to find a Museum that would take it.
@mrb692
@mrb692 5 жыл бұрын
Not to bring politics into what is one of the most apolitical gun channels ever, but I think one of the best compromises in US gun control legislature would be to change the machine gun registry to the “selfloader” registry and get rid of the $200 transfer tax. In doing so, that would both reopen the MG registry and automatically apply the stricter background checks of the NFA to those firearms with the most destructive potential. The net result being that manually operating firearms would transfer on a 4473 same as ever, and selfloaders would transfer on a Form 4. Gun owners get machine guns, gun control advocates get stricter background checks and tighter traceability, I think it’d be a win-win.
@Millz194
@Millz194 5 жыл бұрын
mrb692 the issue there is feasibility. As of now, the ATF is backed up on paperwork for suppressor and SBR forms alone. Adding in every self loader in the country would be such an irrational bureaucratic nightmare causing a large percentage of Americans who don’t get their guns registered to become criminals after the grace period ends while the ATF would need to at very least triple in size to accommodate for such a large expansion of coverage.
@rfswitch4530
@rfswitch4530 5 жыл бұрын
@@mrb692 handguns kill more Americans than all other firearms combined, many times over. Your idea would mean treating every Mom and Pop American in the same way as machine gun owner, just because they want an auto-loading pistol in the night stand for home defense. Opening the registry doesn't need to be justified at the expense of more gun control over title 1 firearms. Opening the registry would give the ATF more control over numerous weapons that are currently contraband and work to preserve a large number of historical, technically interesting, NFA regulated firearms that are currently being stashed away because people can't bring themselves to turn in Grandpa's bringback.
@mrb692
@mrb692 5 жыл бұрын
George Costanza So go around the Pentagon and look for loose change. There’s probably enough money in the cushions to fund the expanded ATF for a decade. A lot can be said about the US government, but there’s nobody that can say it’s a spendthrift. Money is there for things the politicians say it is there for, all that is needed is for the politicians to make it a priority. RF Switch Gaming Joel That also works the other way around: I’d be treating an MG owner like every other gun owner. And let’s be honest, a .357 J frame does just as well against the things that go bump in the night as a Glock with a 33rd magazine so I don’t buy the self defense argument there. I’m not saying selfloaders need to be put on the registry to justify opening it up, I’m saying that by regulating selfloaders with the registry it would be far more likely to be reopened. Course, since the GOP Congress couldn’t get the Hearing Protection Act through, it’s all a moot point anyways.
@rfswitch4530
@rfswitch4530 5 жыл бұрын
@@mrb692 I'm wondering if you've ever done real work with a firearm and, if so, what decade that was in. An auto loading pistol with capacity is many times better in a gun fight than a revolver with 5-6 rounds. In the real world, in real situations, "bump in the night" critters don't go down right away, even with fatal wounds, and that assumes every shot hits the target... which is almost never the case.

@@SonOfTheDawn515 The A1 is far from it. It featured many things which Browning would have implemented (such as fixed timing and headspace with quick-change barrels) had the technology of the time allowed for it. I see it as fulfilling Browning's vision more completely; while Browning was most certainly an innovator, he was also very cognizant of the limitations in the tools he had. A good carpenter can carve masterpieces with bad tools, but it doesn't hurt if they have better tools.
@classifiedad1
@classifiedad1 5 жыл бұрын
@@SonOfTheDawn515 From what I read, the M2A1 Browning does also have a safety (which was for some reason missing on the weapon) in addition to a new bolt, new flash hider which looks like it's going to love getting tangled in everything because clearly open-pronged flash hiders are such a good idea, and fixed headspace and timing. I know that with training, the headspace and timing issues are nonexistent. However, not having to worry about it when changing a barrel is not a bad thing. After all, basically all other machine guns (M249, M240, and even a few M60) in the US military use fixed timing and headspace. Moving to fixed headspace and timing removes a possible point for operator error and makes elements of training more inline with other weapons.
@classifiedad1
@classifiedad1 5 жыл бұрын
@@SonOfTheDawn515 I suppose. However, I do know of instances where improper headspacing and timing caused malfunctions in combat. And you can't argue that making a good weapon even better is a bad thing, as long as you do it right. And not pull an M1918A2 Browning Automatic Rifle.

@@classifiedad1 theres a lovely video that funkers had of a firefight in Afghanistan were the 50 they had wasnt cycling after each shot and the gunner was reduced to using his M4. I originally thought head space/timing was out when I say it but it came to light that the gun had a major malfunction. If you can remove a point of failure/complexity I see no reason why you wouldn't when lives are on the line.

Soldiers still take souvenirs, practice that is, as you said, as old as war. Father picked up a fair few in the First Gulf, up to and including a t-54 MBT! Still remember the argument that caused with my mother, where the hell do you think you are going to put it? was her, somewhat practical question. Dad mumbled something about the driveway.... went downhill after that and the vehicle ended up being donated to a Sigint unit in Pembrokeshire after deactivation where it still stands as a gate guard piece. He broght back other stuff, some weapons, but also some other cool bits and pieces, including several Iraqi radios as well as code books and the like. In many ways they were as cool as the weaponry... Have to admit, the 120mm recoiless rifle also caused a fit of apoplexy with my mother! She was fine with a deactivated AK or two... but having a 120mm recoilless rifle on display in the lounge was a bit much! That too ended up being donated as a museum piece to another Unit elsewhere in the UK dad had served alongside at some point or another. He was helped in all this collection by the fact he was Intel, so he simply stated all his 'loot' was required back home for 'analysis' and it got shipped back on Army transports :D.

While I don't agree with nation states invading and claiming other nation states from an ethical standpoint they very rarely then ran around mugging the population of their possessions. Yes, the majority of modern militaries consider looting the dead and pillaging to be a crime. It reduces your military from a disiplined force serving their nation into thugs that have little to no respect for law when they return home. Do you want your military to be an orgaisation dedicated to the defense of your nation or an organised crime group that commits war crimes for personal gain?

Something I think people forget about the M2 and the 50 bmg is the 50 was designed to be essentially an anti-tank round, from my understanding, so the M2 was originally an anti-tank machine gun. Mind you WW1 tanks had relatively thin armor compared to WW2 tanks. Of course it is so useful and reliable it has soldered on 100+ years later

As a Bulgarian I can tell you anyone interested in Bulgarian service firearms is damn right near obsessed with the Madsen LMG. All accounts of World War I usage state the troops obviously loved the weapon mind you it was used primarily in anti-aircraft role, and since there were numerous "ideological weapons purges" the Bulgarian army (read as - Soviets come "Comrade you have like 200 BF-109 G-6? That's not good comrade, evil machine, sell them we have good cheap LaGG-3 for you!) had through the last 120 years literally no functioning Madsens remain in Bulgaria. Great Q&A so far and I will finish it up over the next couple of cardio. I do want to make a comment on the opening up the registry question... Back in 2016/early 2017 when we were fed the line about going on offense for gun rights and the NRA was getting all the big guntubers on board, Tim from MAC made a comment about shooting with Chris Cox and Cox having a huge machine gun collection. I knew right then they weren't going to go on offense as Cox wasn't going to lose his investment value. I think that 50 cal MG appeared because they anticipated a demand from world navies. Back then torpedo boats and destroyers were very small, less than 100 tons. So they might have had an idea to have a heavy machine gun instead of small artillery pieces. Compared to 37mm or 47mm naval gun they would be more flexible and take less space. And require less crew.

Regarding the continued manufacture and use of MG 34, wasn't another major reason for it its use as a tank (hull) MG? Making the required changes to existing vehicle tooling and production lines (or even tank designs, considering the different barrel change mechanism) to mount the MG 42 would have been a pretty huge undertaking. Made such more sense to keep the MG 34 going.

Here's my totally uneducated take on the 1919 vs MG-42: the 1919 can suppress the enemy for longer, but the MG-42 is scarier. So which inspires more fear: sustained fire or fast bursts? When attacking a machine gun nest, pray the gunner is a bad shot, because getting hit with a burst from either would be bad. So which gives a higher hit probability: high rate of fire or continuous fire?* I'm not sure what the answer is for either question, but it would make an interesting study. *A higher rate of fire means more bullets into a small area, if you're trying to hit a target, but a longer string gives you more opportunity to walk the gun onto target or adjust your lead on a moving target.

There were some high profile cases of persons bringing back quantities of full autos as war trophies and some news stories of national televised interest to minimize prosecuting persons that brought them back.

Ian, do you think we will ever see a repeal or amendment of the 1968 or 1986 National Firearms Act?

I wonder how a PPSH in 9x25 Mauser Export would handle. The 9 Mauser is just a necked up 7.63 Mauser, so it should be as easy as swapping out the barrel

15:30 I had the opportunity in the army to have a training session (no firing, field strip and manual of arms only) on the MG3. as far as I recall, apart from the 7.62 NATO instead of the original mauser, the big difference was that they had cut the firing rate a tad.

@@Orcawhale1 I live in the Houston area (Pasadena deer park area ro be more precise). A petrochemical plant was on fire from sunday to wednsday, school was cancelled yesterday while the fire was still burning. Although they fire was extinguished high levels of benzene were still in the area so the school districts in the area closed today.

The idea that a machinegun collector who paid $35,000 for a given gun would not mind if that gun was reassessed at $5000 if it meant that the registry were reopened and more guns would appear on the market seems dubious. But the whole system of a closed registry seems stupid. Assuming that there are thousands of discovered unregistered machineguns in the country a closed registry makes criminals of otherwise honest people;, and an unregistered gun of any type is much more likely to be used in a crime. Banning the creation and selling of modern machineguns for civilians could make sense, but allowing someone who recently discovered a rusty wartime souvenir in a deceased relatives attic to restore and legally register the weapon is no threat to the public. As usual , it all comes down to money, assuming that most serious machinegun collectors and dealers have serious money, and would want to protect their investments; and that usually means political influence.

Yes the high rate of fire made and stockpiled ammo made Mg-42 King at Normandy. But in mobile operations I would of hated to carry all it's ammo. To be fair it's lighter than a M-1919, so perhaps that balances it out.

I didn't know this before, but yes the US actually tried producing their own prototype version of the MG42 in 1943. According to smallarmsreview.com/display.article.cfm?idarticles=2447 two were produced, but had some pretty basic errors in the prototypes that caused them to fail.

I read in a book saying it was about a ~1/4 inch too short. I wonder what relevant cartridge would be about ~6mm shorter than the US's 63mm. Gee, I can't think of one. Not at all.
