@joshuamasterson76774 жыл бұрын
5.7 sized m193 would be very nice
@88porpoise4 жыл бұрын
It isn’t necessarily that simple. You have to consider the pressure curve as well. Half the charge of twice as powerful of a powder could end up blowing the gun apart if the pressure curve was wrong. Or with semi-automatic and automatic firearms you could see some opening the action way to fast or not getting enough pressure to cycle. Definitely an option to look at, and my instinctive answer to that question is reduced cartridge sizes, but not as simple as “just halve the charge”.
@UnDeaDCyBorg4 жыл бұрын
@@88porpoise Sure, it's not as simple, but gun makers have sat before this problem repeatedly since early black powder, I'm sure they'll manage. I would worry about polymer casings, though. A smaller case would certainly have to have thicker walls, limiting the weight reduction.
@wefyb22 жыл бұрын
Much more energy dense materials exist than nitrocellulose already. People have tried this. It makes guns blow up. You end up needing to thicken case walls, have much more robust primer retention with a longer flash hole, and a more robust locking system. Between these things you end up with minorly smaller cartridges with similar power, far more weight in the action and barrel, and a large increase in cost. The real reason that we keep using nitrocellulose is simple: cellulose doesn't just grow on trees, trees grow on cellulose. It is insanely easy to make in massive quantities, it is safe to handle and prepare, and is highly stable over time, alongside the fact that it burns rather than detonating. Raw power is a tiny factor in propellants in any industry. Cost per kJ of energy on cellulose is cheaper than bread, literally.

Also my edition of Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire can have footnotes that are larger than the text on the page, and sometimes spill over onto the next page.
@GunFunZS4 жыл бұрын
There's a very good book called Jonathan strange and Mr Norrel, by Susanna Clarke. It is I guess you could say historical fantasy set during the regency period. and it's exceptionally well written and that it matches the tone of other things written at the time without inserting the ideas and values of the modern person into that era. The main text the book is very dry, and assumes that the reader was aware of most of the circumstances as they would be common knowledge. Most of the story and tone is actually advanced through the big footnotes. It's very artful. I feel like Toljein maybe you wanted to do that but didn't quite pull it off. Clarke perfected it. And then she wrote a related book set in the same world so to speak written as a modern literary anthology with each chapter being completely totally different and feeling completely like it was written by a different author. I can't think of any other author who could pull that off, and have it still be something that is interesting and enjoyable to read.

The Pittman-Robinson Act (and the Dingell-Johnson Act) are that is the tax Ian mentioned is not just for firearms, but for firearms-related accessories and for anything with the (D-J Act) angling related. So from buying a handgun to fishing reel, to a box of bullets, to a package of fish hooks, there is a 10% or 11% surtax that was paid by the manufacturer or importer of these fishing-hunting related goods. This surtax is the primary reason that the US has at its disposal the huge amounts of money for conversation projects. Supposedly, the initial legislation excluded National Parks, but in some cases, those restrictions have been subverted. With both acts, most of the money is apportioned to the states on a 25% State and 75% Federal monies. So, if you look in many states east of the Rockies, most of the public lands are what are state lands bought with Act funds. Also, the Department of the Interior controls these funds, and the IRS doesn't really have anything to do with it.

In the case of repro firearms, I think a lot of folks fail to realize just how much these things cost new. Most old military arms were exorbitantly expensive to produce and were often made to lavish standards. It really wasn't until the French adoption of the Ruby that mass-manufactured cost-effective weapons really got credence, and even then, it really didn't take off until mass production of weapons, especially submachine guns, in the second war. We are spoiled today by how much technology has brought down manufacturing costs

The shift toward labor being expensive and materials being cheap also doesn't help. Those old WW2 on back guns were/are more or less hand built by today's standards and not all of it translates well to CNC. I'd guess this is why all the cheap 1911s are imported. Or more to the original question how most of those Italian repro guns are considered to be some finishing required kits by people who know them well. They could fit the barrel to the frame properly on the Colt percussion revolvers as Colt did 150+ years ago but you'd pay for it.

Total gun weight would come down by about a quarter or a even a third, and either lighten your ammo load or carry approximately a half again more (mag size would still be there, and while the *brass* would be a little less than half as heavy and of course powder), the bullet weight, etc. is still there.

Karl Mech as a fellow Marylander, you can acquire full capacity magazines out of state and then bring them in, but not trade/sell/transfer them in the state. Also the newer calico models are legal here, and most reasonable gun shops will just block the helical mag with a wooden dowel through the witness holes. Drive out to Harpers Ferry, (or PA border if it’s closer) find a parking spot, and pull out the dowel, drive home

Electrothermal-chemical ignition, which has been experimented with for cannons for quite a while now, managed to get more (useful)energy out of a given propellant charge than the normal priming method while decreasing peak pressure, which from what I understand actually lowered the gun's strength requirement.

Hey Ian, this is Chris from Bear Arms, the Marine Armorer. I just wanted to point out that the Marine Corps (at least when I was in) did use accurized M14s although it was renamed the M39 EMR (Enhanced Marksman Rifle). I had hands on these rifles in multiple armories during my time in so I know the M39 was not an uncommon weapon. while some people might call it a sniper rifle, its roll was more that of a designated marksman rifle, but I think it deserves a mention for that question. there were a few prior iterations of accurized M14s in service but I am less familiar with those.

Two gin cocktail notes. First, you can freeze champagne. Especially if you mix it with simple syrup and lemon juice and stir it with a fork so it becomes a slush. It apparently keeps for about a month. Then you add it to the gin and delight ensues. Second, try one part gin, one part lime juice, two parts grapefruit soda (my local grocery has a store brand Italian soda - it's a little tart, so try not to use something too sweet). Tis a cocktail of my invention, and is lovely.

My Dad taught me to make Martinis the way he liked them . I still remember the instructions he drilled into my head. “Two ice cubes, two cocktail onions or olives, three fingers of Beefeaters Gin, and if I so much has thought of the grandfather of the man who invented Vermouth it was too wet.” I think that explains why I do not drink Martinis.
@davidbrennan6604 жыл бұрын
Chill the glass, no need for ice that waters down the cocktail, for a real dry Martini, just reflect sunlight through the vermouth bottle rather than coat the glass... but we mix what is to our taste, as it is our pleasure. Enjoy.

As to the much higher energy gunpowder: I suspect that there would be more interest reducing the physical size of the cartridge than making the cartridges more powerful.

Regarding not sporterizing old guns Rock island Auctions doesn't charge to evaluate your gun if you think it might be worth something. If it turns out it's worth more than a modern gun you really want you can unload the old gun through them and have the money instead of the project. Spread the word.

@@Chris_Garman 1: People want to have fun. Many people consider the thought of Ian, being in a John Wick movie, fun. 2: Generalizations are bad. Not all of Hollywood is a cesspit. Lionsgate Films (Who are behind Summit Entertainment) is so far as I am aware of, pretty clean of any controversies. So too is Thunderroad Pictures, the two primary production companies bankrolling the John Wick franchise. Keanu Reeves is so far, the immaculate man, who has no dirt on him as far as anyone can find, and I'm pretty sure people have looked. Hard. McShane does appear to have issues with pronouns and the modern climate of identity. He is almost 78 however, and it does not appear, from what I have seen, that he is *against* anyone, just...doesn't understand it.
@duncanwilson22624 жыл бұрын
I agree it would be very cool to see Ian in a John Wick movie. However, instead of being an armourer would it not make more sense if John needed to consult him on some obscure bullet or firearm. The films keep introducing more lore on the High Table and it is all done with historical themes ( thinking of the original gold coins or the way that favours are recorded ). So Ian could almost cameo as himself, giving a 30 sec lecture on the history of an obscure High Table item that lets John find his next target. More awkward to write into the script, I grant you, but would be incredible if it happened.

On the 5:30 propellant question, I think that would ultimately end up with the development of cartridges with the same power levels we have now, just in a much smaller cartridge size, e.g. 5.56mm but the case is the size of a .22lr case, or 6.5 CM in a .30 carbine size case. The individual weapon reduces to being MP5/MPX sized (but with a carbine/rifle length barrel) and the ammo load either reduces in weight, or you can carry significantly more ammo on the same amount of real estate.
@benstoyles12974 жыл бұрын
You could make an MP7 where people actually die when you shout them with it.

Looking forward to a video on Pittman Robertson, I am surprised how many gun owners don't know about it. If more did I have a feeling state game and fish departments would be getting a lot more pressure to build public ranges with the money. The money spend on habitat and parks is great, but being that so many people that are paying the tax are just shooters, diverting a little bit more of it to satisfy the shooting community would probably be fair. Especially for some folks on the east coast that can't use public land for shooting.

About that twice-as-powerful powder: One could also use it to shrink cartridges alot to fire the same bullet at the same velocity from a smaller casing, which would allow people to carry more ammo and reduce the necessary bolt travel and thus allow for higher rates of fire.
