I find Shuai Jiao works well with Chinese martial arts if you are interested in grappling and has many throws similar to Judo or Jujitsu. It doesn't rely on the judo gi as much though and still has some joint locking throws that are prohibited in modern Judo.

Yes, I like Shuai Jiao for that, and would love to learn it properly at some point.

@@MonkeyStealsPeach a friend of mine wanted to go to China and learn Shuai Jiao for a couple of months recently, but when he tried contacting the schools, he said it's been all taken over by BJJ. If there are any Shuai Jiao, it's probably fake. Wonder what the real situation is over there.

There’s lots of Shuai Jiao schools in northern China, particularly around Beijing and Tianjin.

Good to hear your thoughts on BJJ and its interaction with Chinese art skills. I came to it from Taiji & Xing yi and use a lot of the body method from those arts in my BJJ. I will also say that some of the very good experts of BJJ develop very high levels of Ting, connection etc. comparable to any CIMA master i have met. It would be a mistake for CMAists to think such skills are the preserve of their systems and as you say, there is a large amount of cross over and complementary principle between BJJ and certain Chinese Martial Arts.

That’s awesome that you’ve found a BJJ teacher that is open minded about Wushu/Kung Fu. I had a bad experience from a MMA school that used to be in my area (the Central Coast, an hour north from Sydney) the lessons were cheaper than anywhere else. The teachers hated anything “traditional” and they were one of those “West is best! UFC 1!” sort of people which ruined MMA for me. I’m learning Choy Lee Fut and Hebei style Xing Yi Quan in Sydney now.

That sounds like a crappy experience. Where do you learn Xingyi in Sydney? I know there is a fair bit of Choy Li Fut around

@@MonkeyStealsPeach I learn Choy Lee Fut in Chinatown, the owner of the style, Master Chen Yong Fa runs the school there. I learn Xing Yi Quan in West Ryde under Sifu James Gao, Sigung Chu Gui Ting (褚桂亭) lineage. I’m a beginner at both styles but I really enjoy learning them.

@@MonkeyStealsPeach Oh no, I’m sorry to hear that Master Chen declined, I’m sure he has his reasons. The school is excellent though, I highly recommend it. Yeah, I travel from the Central Coast to train which usually takes about an hour to get there but it’s doable. 😁

Have you studied Baji in China as well? If you did, what are the differences? Or any differences in the other northern styles as well?

If you're going to learn baji, I'd learn a baji+pigua system, the pigua stuff would combine very well with your mantis and you'd have more integration of your fight style

Happy New Year ... There is a very rare style that is very similar to the northern styles of the praying mantis. This is the Emei fire dragon fist style ... According to legend, it was created when they saw a fight between a monkey and a snake, so the style has monkey steps and snake hands. .You have to solve this mystery. The famous master Fu Shanxun who lives in Chengdu teaches this style, but there are other masters. This style is not very widespread, but it is interesting and somewhat similar to the praying mantis style.

Cangzhou bainiquan is said to have been created with 19th century boxing mixed with local styles. Maybe you could figure out the history like xingyi/ xinyiba

I would like to congratulate you on an excellent channel. On your more recent series (Hong Kong), was their a particular reason your Southern Mantis seemed most focused on Chu/Chow Gar and not Jook Lum? Was it basically access and time restriction related? I know, they're very similar, but still different flavors. Obviously, both Hakka. Maybe, to show share their differences. I am no expert in either. I have some training and still am friends with Jook Lum people in the United States. Again, great work.

Thanks for your answer I’m sorry you didn’t catch up with master Kwok My teacher gave me some photos of him as a young man all bulked up It came with a tape telling a whole lot of stories of their early training I’m sure an in depth interview would have been really interesting

Looking at your site, it looks like you're in Sydney. If you have any interest in meeting up with the people from the UTS Kung Fu club, I'll put you in touch with them. Alternatively, you might just want to contact them yourself and say hi. They're a very nice group of people with an endless passion for Chinese martial arts (like you). In my personal experience Gordon from the group is pretty much a walking encyclopedia of Chinese martial arts and pretty much directly knows or knows about almost everyone else doing some kind of kung fu in Sydney. I'm sure he'd be delighted to have a cup of tea with you and I think you'd enjoy it too.

Happy New Year from Ireland 🇮🇪 Thank you for checking out the Hakka styles in Hong Kong. Question - have you come across any Li gar/Lee family style practitioners in your journey? As far as I am aware their system is absorbed into BakMei (central warding stick / "Jong Lan Gwan") and other styles.. but would love to hear more. My dad said it was common as our family style once upon a time... I'm only a Shotokan Karate guy, so I feel like some heritage is lost to the ages.

Li Gaa is very popular in the city of Huizhou, about 60km east of Hong Kong. However, it's still very local to the area.

@@Veepee92 Thanks for the reply. Yes I've heard Huizhou/WaiZhou is a predominantly Hakka area. My ancestral roots are from there too, but we've lost our ties to the region now after having left there 90 years ago (war and geopolitics) . I am glad the system is still being practiced. I've heard from my father that once upon a time the Central Warding Stick was a signature system to the Li clan - a 'Tiger Killing gwan' as it were, and BakMei master - Sifu Lee Kwok Pui and his father may have known it - but the BakMei set might be only half of the Li system (in terms of set forms or 'partner drills' I presume).
