Ah my most embarrassing language moment is sending a personalized friend request in Mandarin to some of my boyfriends friends but accidentally using the wrong character in his name so I basically just called him 'Learning King' and now his friends call him that as a joke so every time I hear that I get very embarrassed but slightly amused haha

"I know someone who became conversational after 3 months...rude" LMAO I just passed 1.5 years and I feel that. My listening is advanced but my other skills are much further behind and speaking is the worst. Because my priority has been understanding Korean media, particularly KPOP content so I have invested the most time in my listening skills.

LOL He's really good at learning languages... again rude HAHA but I think he tends to put more emphasis on speaking than other skills. But same~ I'm more concerned about learning to read and understand academic Korean for grad school than learning how to speak about random things haha I'm having to play catch up now, but that's okay haha

@@NataliaGarza haha exactly! I have gotten to the point where I can understand a lot of media without subs (like RUN BTS LOL) so now I need to catch my other skills up. I have been learning Korean as a hobby but I am starting to look at it in terms of professional use so I definitely need to start catching everything up. But I am likely still looking at a timeframe in years so I have time haha

Omg I told my teacher “쉬하고 싶어요” (I want to pee) instead of “쉬고 싶어요” (I want to rest) and have used 쉬하다 (to pee) instead of 쉬다 (to rest) many times... ㅜ

Regarding the whole "do you believe you'll reach the level of fluency you want and are you worried how long it'll take" topic, I'm surprisingly chill when it comes to that. Maybe it's the fact that Korean is the first language that I started to learn entirely of my own volition (rather than it being dictated by the school curriculum), so I don't see it as a skill that needs to be mastered in an x amount of time. It's first and foremost a hobby that's supposed to make me happy, and since I have the freedom to set my own pace and expectations (and there's no one grading me), I don't see the point in putting a lot of pressure on myself. I didn't go through 16 years of formal education just to make learning stressful on my own hahaha no thank you.

I think while practicing Korean the most embarrassing thing so far wasn't something I said but probably just all the 30 second long "어ㅓㅓㅓ... 음ㅁㅁㅁㅁㅁ ummmm"-filled breaks when I just can't think of how to say something 😂

In Korean pronunciation there are many adjustments. The Korean pronunciation book “The Sounds of Korean” mentions in page 95, the adjustment “Weakening of ㅌ and ㅊ” In this specific case when flower is followed by the suffix 을, this happens: 꽃을 which we might think is pronounced [꼬츨] becomes [꼬슬]. This book catapulted my listening and comprehension. It has a link to download the mp3 audios. I totally recommend this book. I’m surprised people are not recommending this book all over the internet. My textbook teaches 3 adjustments, but I kept missing my pronunciation of various words, so I bought a paper dictionary that mentioned 8, that’s when I said wait a minute, let me figure out what I should be trying to identify when I listen. this book has 15 adjustments + tons of practice exercises. Love it!!!

You're my favourite Korean studygram/KZbin you were also the first person in the language community i became friends with! I still treasure the gifts from 2 years ago and I rlly wish I could meet u to thank u for everything just the initial push to make me START learning, the constant motivation, and now you're rekindling my drive hahaha. If you’re into instant gratification, maybe learning a language will be very trying for you 😂 Also, when people say they don’t have t8me for something (and I’m talking to myself here as well😂), that’s usually a crock. 99% of the time we make time for what we actually care about: a half hour long show, a trip to Starbucks, a long phone call, working out, etc. I used to say i didn’t have time to work out, but i could tell you what was on the last episode of whatever show i liked. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 I wanted to give up all the time, but i won’t learn it that way so here we are 😂
