Gabbie, I just want to share my experience (which obviously is different for everyone), but from a girl who had lived Brighton her whole life and then moved to London 2 years ago, my advise is if you really want to make the move, just don't sell your flat. Within a year you could really miss Brighton and want to move back. Just my opinion/experience that I wanted to share

Gabbie do you have any advice for moving out for the first time? I’m 23 and got a job offer in Edinburgh with the opportunity to move in with my boyfriend to see how we get on living together! My best friend also lives in the city (I currently live 2 hours away with my family) but I’m still really nervous about such a big change. Any thoughts or advice from your past experiences would be greatly appreciated☺️

Hey, I’m not Gabbie but I saw your question and wanted to share my experience, hope that’s okay. First of all congrats on your job offer! That’s really awesome and exciting. So I’m from Germany and I moved 1 1/2 hours away from my whole family/social circle when I was 22 to study. So the same age as you are now and almost the same distance. I didn’t know anyone there so it was a big change and also the first time I’ve lived alone. I lived there for 6 years and learned a lot about myself and well life in general. I met some amazing people that I’m still friends with and some I lost contact with. Obviously a lot happened in that time, some good, some bad but overall it was a really good time of my life. I was really nervous before the move but looking back, none of my worries came true. I think it’s scarier in your head now than it will be in reality. Don’t get me wrong it is a big thing and it will challenge you but you got your boyfriend and a friend there so you already got some people you can count on. And yes you will miss your family and the routine you got right now but at the end of the day, it’s only a 2 hour distance and if it comes to it, you could go back even if it’s just for one day to see everybody. Some points I would like to give you: - Only do it if you really want to. There is nothing wrong with living at home and being with your family. Yes you really grow when you’re experiencing something so big but there’s no need to force yourself if you’re really scared about it. (I’m talking scared scared! Being a little scared or more like nervous is something else) - Living with your boyfriend will change your relationship. Do you have a plan b if living together is not the right thing for now for you two? (Not saying it won’t be good or anything, just something to have in the back of your mind. Can you support yourself if it’s really not working, did you talk with him about that, etc.) - Try to find a hobby when you’re there. Maybe join the gym or a book club or some yoga classes or you volunteer at an animal shelter. Just try to find something besides the job that you (might) enjoy. It took me a while to do that and I didn’t do anything besides go to uni/study and watch tv or chill at home the first year. So it wasn’t really a home for me but more of a workplace environment with a few downtimes if you get what I mean. But living is more than just work and housework etc. - I feel like, the older I get the harder it is to find genuine friendships. Yes, you know some people there but it’s always good to have as much of a friend group you want and feel like having. So like maybe you can meet some new people through your boyfriend/friend or one of your new hobbies. Or you really get along with some of your colleagues. Having more physical and emotional support there will help you feel secure and comfortable. - You will miss people. Don’t try to fight it or power through it. Give yourself time to cry if you feel like it. Go back if it’s too much and you want to see your family but try to give your new place a chance to become your new home. Invite your family and show them around etc. It’s not supposed to feel like a then and now or like old life - new life type of thing. It’s a new place but it’s not losing people and never talking/seeing them again. - If you tried and I mean really tried but it’s just not working then there is no shame in going back. You’re allowed to change your mind about everything you feel/think today. This is your decision alone, don’t let anybody take it from you. I hope I could give you some pointers. Ps my hubby’s nickname from me is cabbage. I’m beetroot lol ( I love and eat beetroot) had a pebble picture done of hubby and I with cabbage and beetroot forever on it. Having children is a personal decision and up to you, my hubby and I met late in life so decided not to have children x I love giving children back.
