Hallo Dana, I met my wife, who comes from Germany in America 28 years ago. I come from Australia and the first 4 years of our marriage we lived in Australia. I didn't speak German or plan to. However my wife got homesick. So we decided to move to Germany and give it a chance. It took me a couple of years to learn. I did a traineship here, which really helped. Then gradually our langauge changed from english to german. Now we speak both langeuges with each other without any problems. We have now been living dir 24 years in Germany. We manly speak german here and If we visit the family in Australia we speak english. So it is possible to speak both langeuges. Merry Christmas 🎄 Bye David

Hello from Brazil. Dana, I've been looking for a channel like this so much to practice my English and I was watching just because you speak very slow and it's easy to understand you for a non native speaker, but you guys caught me, ahahahaha, your vibe is so "up" that I can stop watching. You're amazing and I love your videos. Keep doing this amazing work

Luis Arthur Arboit Walker I also recommend "Rachel and Jun". Similar setting with a binational couple where they speak English. Most of the time it's easy to understand :D. They have two other channels: "Rachel and Jun's adventures" and "Jun's kitchen". Or try "Texan in Tokyo"

I freaking love that stained timber background, Dana. Gorgeous. So, waking slowly without conversation: I agree with Stephan on that one. I gotta have time to remember any fragments of dream that I can, and sift for creative bits. Jumping into conversation just pops that bubble too abruptly. Speaking of dreams, that’s a big mile marker for fluency, IMO. When you wake up and realize, Mein Gott, Ich träume auf Deutsch, then you know your fluency has reached a new level (for me it was Dios mío, soñaba en Castellano, but I’m gonna have me that dream in German one day, it’ll happen!). Lastly, my vote is YES on the road trip video in German. Can’t wait to see it. Cheers! -Phill, Las Vegas

5:30. I can soo relate to what Stephan said! I'm Italian and my boyfriend is German. When we met we spoke English and we went on like this with the result that after 2 years and half I have reached only a B1 level in German. Everybody is telling us to drop English and speak German or Italian between us and we try but it's really weird and we're both uncomfortable. I think Stephan is right, the language also conveys emotions and feelings and it's our way of communicating! We also speak English with some German/Italian words here and there such as: "I'm driving on the Autobahn" :)

I have to say something even though I'm just at the first question: STEFAN I'M COMPLETELY WITH YOU on that one! I like to wake up early but I hate to talk! Back when I worked in shifts it was a NIGHTMARE getting to work with my dad and another colleague. They wouldn't stop talking while I wanted to hear the news on the radio IN PEACE! It was terrible and now, when I get up, I drink my coffee in silence and I'm gladly alone in my car! :D So.. yeah, I think we're morning persons with just one tiny requirement :D

You do realize that in Germany the majority of large families are... uhm let's say from a specific social strata? Basically you'll find large families in 3 social groups (from rarest to by far most common): - religious fundamentalists - idealistic academics - low income / low education families We belong to the second group (having three kids ourself) ... but group 3 surely comprises 90%+ of the large families. And given how little is done to help those kids... we honestly do not need more of them just "because they are germans". There are already enough "Sascha's" out there. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJXcm2SYa8uBZqM

Jeder in seiner Muttersprache. I do love the change that Stefan is in the videos more! I love seeing the two of you together! :) Maybe with the driving video, Stefan could do it in German, and then Dana could translate what he just said into English for those of us still learning German? I think it could be quite funny to have Stefan saying things in his normal more-serious face, and then have Dana follow up with her normal-enthusiastic face and gestures (as if that's how Stefan had just said it). Lol X) You mentioned a sport in Germany that you'd not heard of until you got there, but you didn't explain what it is or how it's played. You compared it to two other sports that I have no clue how they're played (curling and bac... something?). Maybe you could do a video in the future about these sports, show some footage of people playing it (if anyone adults or kids local to you plays them) and explain a bit about them?

I read that it may be possible to have dual citizenship with Germany due to the cost of US citizenship renunciation. If you can demonstrate that it will cost too much, you may be able to keep your US citizenship when getting German Citizenship.
@jas88cam7 жыл бұрын
Ryland Dickman yes, if you have a good lawyer it's possible to get permission to keep both; I know if Stefan wanted to get US citizenship without losing his German one, he'd need "Beibehaltungsgenehmigung"; I'm not sure what it's called in the other direction (permission for Dana to get German citizenship without them insisting on her giving up US citizenship to get it). It seems the Dutch are relaxing their rules on dual citizenship a bit under their new coalition government, perhaps Germany will too.
@giovanni09087 жыл бұрын
A document for keeping one's US citizenship, such as a Beibehaltungsgenegmigung, does not exist. Under US law, American citizens do not loose their US citizenship if naturalizing in another country unless the other country requires it. Rather, US citizens only OFFICIALLY loose their citizenship by completing the costly process, which I talked about above. What were the changes in the Netherlands?
@jas88cam7 жыл бұрын
Ryland: The problem is with German law, not US - if Dana takes German citizenship, the German government would normally insist that she give up her US citizenship, unless she gets *their* permission to keep it as well. The US government doesn't mind. In the Netherlands, the 'D66' party has been pushing for a change in their rules for a while now, and will apparently get some progress in that direction as part of the new coalition; there's an older article about their position here: www.dutchnews.nl/news/archives/2016/12/d66-pvda-submit-plans-to-allow-dual-nationality-in-the-netherlands/

lol that's funny. Before I married my German husband, we used to be online friends, we kinda did that on and off for ten years, and ALWAYS in English, but when we were planning the wedding, i had like a year of anticipation for the planning, while still in the US, then that year all I did was study German everyday, I used to get very frustrated and started watching videos on how to improve my German, I was freaking out because I was moving to Germany i wanted to be able to communicate, then I saw that a few couples would try to speak the spouses language and alternate a few days a week, that was awesome for me. I started speaking German with my husband 10 minutes only at the beginning of our calls, it was AWKWARD, HARD lol, i couldn't put a sentence together, omg I remember, then we made it 15 minutes then 20, then after 4 months we were mainly speaking German but of course, everytime I want to say more specific or complex things i have to switch back to English, I still do and I've been in Bavaria 7 months already. I was making phone calls almost since I got here, haha I didn't always understand everything but I think did pretty good with the calls. But, yea, it wasn't as awkward for me to start speaking German with my husband after 10 years of only English, for me having that opportunity to practice with him is priceless :) but everyone's goals are different

As an American living in Munich, what are the "must see" sights in Munich, in your opinion? Have you been to Salzburg, Chur, Ljublijana, and what are your thoughts? When you were living in Prague, what kind of visa did you have, and was it hard to get? Were you working in Munich before you two got married, and how hard was it to get a work visa? Do you find that you watch more, less or the same amount of television and movies than you did when you lived in America? What is your internet speed, is it DSL, Cable, Fiber or something else, and how much do you pay for it? How long does it take to upload a video to KZbin? Any plans to go 4k? Do you archive all your old edited videos and unedited footage? What kind of microphones are you using? Who did your music and animation? Favorite German television shows? Do you have any tricks for remembering which articles go with which words? German doesn't seem to have any reason - der Rhine, die Danube, der Salzach, das Madchen? Do you go to church? If you have kids, Santa, Christkind, or Krampus? I noticed you said you speak mainly English at home. I have friends who live in Switzerland who spoke mainly English at home. They didn't think much of it until their daughter started kindergarten, and came home crying because she couldn't talk to the other kids, and they made fun of her because she couldn't speak German

I didn't know opening Christmas presents on Christmas Eve was "the German style." I was raised by my maternal grandparents, and we always opened our presents on the 24th in the evening, except for a few for the children, which were opened in the morning of the 25th. So, why is opening presents on the 24th the German style? My grandmother was from a German family (she was a Waldroup), so maybe that's why we did it. But my grandfather was from a Welsh family (he was an Evans), so maybe that's why we opened some presents on the 25th. BTW, we passed the tradition on to our children, who have passed it on to their children.

ghshinn it differs from country to country in europe. In Germany, the so-called 'Bescherung' happens on the 24, while in France gifts are unwrapped on the 25th. Italy and Spain are quite the opposite waiting until Jan 6 to open their presents.
