My daughter met her husband on the airplane to come to see us for Christmas. There was a fierce storm going on and lots of snow. We went to the airport to meet her and were told that Dusseldorf airport was closed for plane traffic and that they would land in Frankfurt instead and be bussed up to Dusseldorf. She was coming from America and was tired and it took 13 hours to bring them up from Frankfurt. Getting on the bus, she was having trouble with her luggage and a handsome man helped her out. They sat together for the long ride back, well history happened and the Dutch boy met my American daughter and from then on they were a pair. Funny how things happen.

My wife and I met on airplane in 2008...we sat next to each other and started talking. The flight was a 1 hour flight from Atlanta Georgia to Columbus, Mississippi. I was flying home from St. Louis and she was flying from Stuttgart to visit friends (Germans) in Mississippi. We started talking and now 10 years later I have been in Germany for 8 years, happily married for 8 years, and halfway through the process of becoming a German citizen.

Thanks. I will give up my US citizenship. This is because I have lived in Germany for 8 years now, I pay taxes here, all of my insurance/retirement is here, and most importantly, Germany is my home now. It is possible for some people, in special circumstances, to have both based on financial reasons. Even if I qualified for this exception, I would still choose to only have the German citizenship.

Love your story! Fate resides in Germany: Back in 1992, I flew into the newly reunited East Berlin with a group from my high school on an exchange program. Our first day there, my friends and I were outside the hotel wondering what to do. The cutest guy ever came with his brother to our hotel because it had a billiards room. After talking we met again in the same courtyard the next day, but then I had to take a train to my host family hours away. We wrote letters and he called long distance a few times over the next few years, but we lost touch after I finished college and moved around so much. I figured I’d never see him again. Fast forward about 15-20 years later, we were both looking for each other. He found out I was on Facebook and opened an account. He made his first trip to the US to see me. A year later he proposed to me in the same East Berlin courtyard where we met 24 years earlier! ❤️ Now, we are married.

About fate residing in Germany - I love when people ask me what I think of the Fall of the Wall. "Well, if Germany had stayed divided, my parents wouldn't have met and I wouldn't exist (meaning you couldn't ask me)."

My dad met my mom while he was stationed in Germany. But it's kind of funny how they met... My dad was stationed near Nürnberg, and one of his Army buddies had bumped into a pretty German lady and asked her out, but wanted my dad to be his wing man in case he needed back up. Meanwhile, the pretty German girl had a friend who was not about to let her go off on her own to meet some American dude, and was going to tag along to make sure everything went ok. That friend was my mom. So my dad's friend and my mom's friend met and hit it off and left to do their own thing, leaving my single dad and my single mom in the dust. They struck up a conversation and the rest is history. 4 years of dating later my dad's stay in Germany was over and Uncle Sam was telling my dad to pack his bags. So they knew if they wanted to stay together, they should probably get married. They got married, my mom followed my dad to the US, about 2 years later, I came around. They're now going on 29 years together.

I’ve met my German boyfriend at a night club in Brazil. I was distracted talking to a friend and walking in the direction of the bar when I bump on him, I said sorry in Portuguese, than in English and we started to talk. When he said he was German, I said: ohhhh, ich spreche ein bissen Deutsch and I saw the most beautiful smile ever. He was the first nice guy on that night, the others were really inconvenient in flirting and I had seen him looking at me a lot before. It was in 2015 and we’re together since then ❤️❤️❤️

I met my husband (let's call him Bob) while working as a lab tech at a Lenscrafters in the mall. Bob was a delivery driver for DHL (shipping company). He would always hang around for a couple minutes and talk to all the lab techs because we were his last stop before lunch. Found out that we both played the same online game and exchanged contact information so we could play together. My then boyfriend and I split up for unrelated reasons. A few weeks later I told Bob that I needed to get out of the house and demanded that we go see a movie together as friends. We've been together ever since. Married 2 years this coming June and together for 10 years. TLDR; I married my delivery boy.

Wonderful story Dana! Loved the way you teleported all over the world to tell it! I met my wonderful wife on the Internet, back when "everyone thought" we were totally crazy for doing that. She lived on the other side of the country from me, so we'd never have bumped into each other otherwise. We got engaged the first day that we physically met (which only worked out because we each knew ourselves and what we wanted in life really well), and the rest is history. Now, many years, 2 kids, 2 dogs, 2 cats, a lizard, and 4 fish later - we continue to be blessed!

I met my husband in primary school. My mom and I moved to another city here in germany when I was in 3rd grade. We were not friends right away. So we lost each other out of sight. But some of his friends knew some of my friends. So we saw each other again when we were 14 years old and fell in love. Now we are 26 years old, we are together for over 11 years now and got married last summer.

I met my husband at work. We worked together for about 6 months, however, it was not love at first sight (we’ll not for me anyways) we had a mutual friend that we also worked with and after 2 years I connected back with her. She asked me if I wanted to go swimming at the lake and I said yes. Of course, my husband was there and we had a ton of fun. He asked me if I wanted to hang out at an Irish bar downtown WITH our other friends the next weekend. So I said yes. Everyone canceled at the last minute. Which I found out later, was their plan. They wanted to leave the two of us alone. We had a drink at the bar and then took a walk along the river. We ended the night with another drink in a restaurant along with some snacks. We dated for almost year and he proposed. We got married 13 months later on our 2 year anniversary. We’ll have been married for 4 years this July.

I met my fiancé at a wine festival. I started talking to him because I heard him speaking English and I rarely had the chance to speak it. We chatted for a bit and then he asked me to dance. When we came back to the table we looked at each other and that was it. There was a moment. It's been more than three years since :)

It was my very first lesson in driving school. I live in the west of germany, near cologne. There was this guy right in front of me that looked interessting. He was there with a friend. But after like 20 minutes they stood up and walked away. In this moment I heard someone from the very back of the room (it was very crowded) saying “finally“. Some guy stood up and took one of the seats that the other boys left empty. I looked at him and from the first second he was the most beautiful guy that I had ever seen. I thought about him every day after that and whenever I saw him in driving class I was shaking. When I found out his name I decided to do something but I was not sure when. It was a tuesday when I couldn't got him out of my head. After work I took my bus, went to the back and then he was sitting there. We had never taken the same bus before. He smiled at me and I was in love. In the evening there was another lesson. It passed and when I walked out I couldn't find my mom to pick me up yet. Instead the guy was standing on the other side of the road at the bus station alone. I took a deep breath, walked right up to him and said “Steve? It may sound weird but can I have your number?“ He said yes and I left with a little paper with his phone number on it. We are a couple for 1 year and 8 months now.

So guys, do not despair. If you happen to see a young pretty lady searching for company or looking like she is open to be contacted - "Would you like a seat ?" does the trick just fine, no witty or original remarks necessary (it does help if you do not look like an ogre, and a friendly smile definitely helps).

Great story Dana. Very romantic. I met my husband in Rosneath, Ontario, Canada. I was there at a fishing camp with my friend and her parents. My husband was there with his father and brother. One day when the lake was too rough to fish, I was sitting on the dock fishing. He came up and asked if he could by me a soda at the little restaurant at the camp. As we sat there talking, it turned out we lived about 5 miles apart near Akron, Ohio. We made a date to meet after we got back and as you say--"the rest is history". We'll be married 44 years in August.

I have several interesting stories how I met friends. A friend I made at a concert told me, she recently found someone again on myspace, she lost contact with 4 years ago, she mentioned him several times and decided one day, we should become friends. She opened a chat, invited this guy and another, who I talked to once before in the room with me, then she said, I'll leave you for 30 minutes, have fun. I added the guy and a week later, we talked again... From that day one we talked everyday, me in Germany and him in Australia, there was even a time, when we talked every walking hour. When he celebrated NYE alone that year, I promised him, next year, we would celebrate together. In summer he moved for work to Japan. So yes, I went to Japan and we met the first time in real life December 23rd 2008. He was at my place twice, I visited again Japan. We are still friends. At this second time in Japan, I stayed with him in Tokyo and that one day, I was doing several things in the city, I wanted to go back to his place, but got a message saying, he had to go out for work and wouldn't be back for several hours. I decided to go to a bar of friends, but everyone I was close with, was not there that day. But I had time to kill, just very little money, so like you, I was holding onto this one glass. Then there was a girl, who began to talk to me, she was the only not Japanese person in the bar that night and we began to talk. She was American, having lived in Japan for 10 years, but would move that year to France. When we talked, we realised, we had several mutual friends so I told her, hey come visit me in Germany, when you moved to France. Some days later I found her on FB and yes, over 30 mutual friends, but we had never heard of each other. Fast forward to February of the next year. Two other friends, who were friends of the girl, too, just stayed with me after they moved from Japan to Germany and searched for a flat. The girl stayed with us for 2 weeks and it was like family. She fell for Berlin, loving it here much more than Lyon. She decided, after her year was up there, she would move to Berlin. She did, she moved here 2011, got her 5 year visa last year and will work on her citizenship now. We are close friends. The oldest weird story, happened, when I was living in my first own flat, 19 years old and I went to a local music festival, where the new band of the guitarist of one of my favourite bands performed. Their performance was great and I talked to several people, who came just for this one band. There were two girls from Finland, free spirits and they told me, they really hadn't a place to stay for the night. I decided, a well, why not and invited them to stay at my place. When undressing I found a guitar plec of this guitarist, I had no real idea, how it came into my clothes. Next day I showed the girls the city and helped them to the station. Where a taxi arrived, with the band! We talked with the guys till it was time for them to catch their train. The girls and me had exchanged email addresses, but contact was sporadic, it was before social media. But a year later, after I moved to Berlin, I went to a concert and who did I meet, one of the Finnish girls. But contact was still sporadic. When I joined FB and searched for friends, thanks to her email address, I found her there and contact became more frequently. She visited Berlin for holidays with her BF and I showed them the city and we were hanging out. When I decided to visit Helsinki for a concert for a weekend, we met up there and had a great conversation, where I ended up inviting her to join me at a convention in Wales in April, the next year. We went and I showed her London, too. We became closer friends and stayed the next year at a friends place in Wales, did sightseeing there and just had a good time, we are friends for 14 years now and closer than ever.

I also had a pull to go to Europe. So when I turned 18 I decided to take a trip to Germany for a festival that I had always wanted to go to. Rock Am Ring💞 when I arrived I quickly realized how alone I was so I got in line to get my wristband to enter the festival grounds. In front of me were three people my age struggling to keep all of their belongings in their cart. Their pillows, sleeping bags, and beer kept falling so I decided to be nice and help them carry their stuff. They were really appreciative about it and started talking to me in German. They did the same thing Mr German man did 😂 They repeated what they said but in English this time. They invited me to their tent site and from there it blossomed into a friendship that I cherish greatly. I became really good friends with one of them in particular and the next year I even went to her house in the black forest! And the next year she came to my house in Florida! I love Germany so much. The people, culture, landscape... It will always have a special place in my heart and hopefully soon I can move there.

My German wife and I really enjoyed watching your video ! We met two winters ago in Detroit when I was working at a show. She was in Detroit with a student group doing research, and, long story short, I ended up giving her and her classmates a ride home in the back of my pickup truck at 5am on a cold snowy morning. ^_^ She and I exchanged information not knowing when/if we'd ever see each other again. I asked her out the next day, and we went on two long, wonderful dates over the next two days. On the third day, before she left, I proposed, and she said 'yes' !! Several months later I came for a visit to meet her family and for some job interviews, and two months after that I moved here. Since moving here we have shared so many wonderful experiences, and grow more in love with each other every day. We were married last Fall, and live near Hamburg. ^_^ PS, I also have Czech roots, which we will be exploring in May in eastern Czechia, with a stop in Praha on the way home. ;P

Wonderful story and so much effort put in this video ! I met my boyfriend at the last evening on a cruise ship. They have these big tables for 8 persons in their restaurants and our families accidentally chose the same table. The moment I saw him I already thought “what a pretty man” and because my family always goes to bed early I decided to stay with him and his family for watching the traditional laser show. So we began talking and talking til 6am. The only problem was that we lived 350km apart, but we met a couple times after that evening and began a long-distance-relationship:) now we live together since 2015 and more years to come :)

My wife and I met at our university jiujitsu club. I'd been going there since my second year there as a mature student doing a BA in French and Communication Arts, and while I was away in France doing my year abroad which the course mandated, my wife was doing her MSc in nutrition and public health. When I returned I went back to the jiujitsu club and there was this tiny young woman throwing guys about that are twice her size. So, I fell for her, and then I swept her off her feet... Essentially we ended up going on an all day jitsu course at Leeds Metropolitan University and after a whole day of the course we all went to the Dry Dock, which is a pub made out of an old canal barge that's on land, and we all got a bit wrecked. She and I got talking, but if I remember rightly nothing much happened there - but then a week or so later we were in the pub after practice and her housemate, Melissa, got a bit over-tipsy and had to be carried about a mile or so home, which I volunteered for. Sue and I got talking some more once we were back at hers, and discovered we share a love of sci-fi. I think that's when we agreed to start dating, so we went à few days later to see some Keanu Reeves movie and have a curry in Bradford. In June, we'll be celebrating 20 years of marriage. Our eldest, Frank, is 15. His little sister is 12. They're among the most highly trained kids in the UK in the Krav Maga fighting system.

I live in America and met by best friend who is all the way from Berlin Germany last year when he came to my school as a foreign exchange student. We became so close that I am visiting him for a month over the summer and continuing my dreams to study abroad outside of high school by going to a school in Berlin! Life is crazy

Before my partner and I met we were neighbors. He lives literally right across from my apartment. Same house, same floor. Our doors are right across each other. For 6 months we never talked and only met twice in the stairwell and said hello without looking at each other while passing by. One day, after another elder neighbor was very rude to me, I decided that I believe in a neighborhood that is kind and helps each other. That's when, shy that I am, placed a little piece of paper in the door gap of my direct neighbor, introducing myself and offering my help, in case he might need it. That's when a writing friendship started until we finally started dating. No we're living happily together each in our own apartment next door. ❤️

I met my boyfriend last year online, at the time we weren't really looking for anything romantic, nothing more than a friendship. It was sort of coincidental considering he's from Switzerland and I'm from the U.S. We didn't really talk at first, but... As much as I hate to say I can't remember what really we started talking about when we started talking more, or why... Bring it to about October, and I just... Couldn't help my feelings... He was on my mind all the time, and all of my thoughts about him just made me super happy- along with starting to really communicate and be open. It went on like this for a while, he knew that I liked /someone/ but apparently he never put together that I liked him. In November, just a little before thanks giving he made a comment of something like "Just come here and kiss me" --- it had felt like we'd been flirting a lot, and I took that as a sign that it was time to say something. That he definitely liked me back and that things would work out despite our continental differences. So... I go and I lay everything out on the line, I tell him that I like him... But I don't hear back from him for several hours, I guess he was just busy or something, but my mind was so distracted the entire day. I wound up going out with some friends for a gaming night and eventually he starts messaging me back. He told me at the time that he was unsure of how he felt and that he needed time to think, along with asking that even if it didn't get romantic if I'd still be okay with being friends. I told him of course, and a few days later he asked if when he came to the states I'd like to go on a date. I got so excited at that point and just told him a very excited yes. Flash forward a few months and here we are, hopefully I'll get to see him face to face this summer

Great story!!! It’s so interesting to hear how couples meet! I met my husband online. It doesn’t sound all that exciting, but considering we grew up in different countries, had similar lives and even watched the same shows in different languages, it’s pretty cool! He’s half Swiss and half Costa Rican and I’m American. I’m currently trying to learn Spanish and German so I can speak to my in-laws in their native languages.

Great video, Dana. Must have taken you ages. My best friend and I met in a internet forum. We both were writers if fanfiction back then. In the same Fandom. But she didn't dare to contact me directly so she asked for a beta reader in a way that she thought I would response. I did. It took a lot of mails and messages for six months until we finally met the first time. We travelled New Zealand together. And we have been best friends for 5 years now even though she lives near Hamburg and I live near Cologne.

That‘s such a cute story! Sounds like it was just meant to be 😍 I met my best friend while we were at a camp. She came in a week later than everyone else and at some point she was just sitting there, all alone and I decided to go up to her and talk to her, which I normally don‘t do, but for some reason I just knew it was gonna work out. We‘ve now been best friends for over 6 and a half years 😄👯‍♀️

On Facebook. I was volunteer for a project that should go big if the boss wasn't so ignorant. Promotion of music and new underground musicians was my daily task that took just an hour maximum. We chatted, being friends then one day he told me he was in love with me. We planned a date after a year when I finally could finish university studies and we dated in Düsseldorf. Since then on we are together. We'll marry this year. We had a lot of job change, renovating the Appartment, not enough Money for a real wedding party so we'll have to settle for an "official wedding" first.
