I find the most difficult part is just maintaining my interest past the initial 3 months where everything feels fresh and new until I reach a high intermediate level where it's fun and easy to use the language.

03:34 learning a language but not speaking That was such an interesting question! When I was younger ppl were always asking me: "Why do you study English? It's not related to your future job. You're just wasting your time". The same happened with Korean, Japanese and French. The latter 2 I don't use lately but English and Korean actually have become so big in my life that I got a Bachelor's in English and later I started teaching both English and Korean. The point is that is you have a passion for something you never know what you end up doing in your life and the language you're learning might be actually useful in the long run :)

I’m Filipino and in the future I want to focus more on other Philippines languages there are like 170-180 so there is a lot to choose When learning languages that are super close to languages that you already know I find that just listening can be the only method you use and eventually you can get it Like Isnag and ilocano (2 close languages in PH, it’s basically like comparing Spanish and Italian)

@@Erika-pq7ip mostly yes but it can get a bit complicated sometimes, like some regions may use different lingua francas but you use a different language in your province Say for example, my mother is Isnag but when she travels to different parts of our region she may speak ilocano but in other parts she may speak Tagalog

I feel like in order to stay motivated, you can try and watch a lot of stuff in Korean. So long as you are mentally connected to the languages, you will make progress even if you don't notice it on the spot

I can relate with that person who asked about learning languages but not speaking in them. My main interest for learning languages is to be able to understand and thus to have access to content (as I do with your videos, English not being my native language). In that sense, speaking is last in my list when I think on my languages and I think it's OK. Everyone is different and no one is forced to speak. That being said, last year I started to do language exchanges and I like my languages buddies very much, they are all great and I enjoy learning with them ☺

About feeling unsafe where I live, it doesn't bother me anymore unless I take a break to remind myself on how many acts I take to feel safer or even how many things I simply avoid to do because it's unsafe to go outside alone, in some places or at some time in the day... it's really annoying actually, mainly for women btw, awesome video and tips!! greetings from Brazil

I came here specifically for 3:34, that's me 😅 (didn't make the question just feel identified by it). I am studying Korean on my own, but for now my only goal is to be able to read, write and understand it, I don't live anywhere near Koreans and I don't know where I could make Korean friends, I just fell in love with the language and the culture.

I did a course on FutureLearn recently which included basics on UX and coding. As someone who had never done anything like that before, I found it super interesting, and it’s kind of cool to see how languages we speak and computer languages relate to each other!

Lindie, it's just a pleasure to watch your videos. I hope someday you may pick up my native language, Bengali. I promise you that you'll be exposed to great literature, culture and you'll find the language very sweet. Anyway, I speak four languages. Bengali, English, Hindi and Urdu and can read and write in the first 3 of them. I'm currently learning Spanish and the perso-arabic script for the 4th language that I speak. Apart from these 5, I plan to learn French, German, Russian, Korean and Japanese before I turn 30 (I'm 22 now).

I feel like it's more difficult for me to learn languages similar to my native one (Spanish) for example when I'm studying French I tend to mix the vocab a grammar a loooot because they are so similar but one word in French doesn't mean the same on Spanish so it's a mess. Love your videos Lindie!

Good day! Ms. Lindie, I just need an opinion about something. I hope you'll notice this. I am a college student majoring in English. I just have one question regarding the "Silent Period" as theorized by Stephen Krashen. It says that when learning a second language, there is a period that before an L2 learner starts speaking in L2, he or she spends time watching and listening to people use the language. This is the case for learning a second language. So, for you as a polyglot, is this also applicable when learning other foreign languages beyond your L2?

How does one maintain a language ( time spend daily / weekly ) enough to not lower in level ?

Good question. I think that would depend on what activities you're doing in the language and depends on your current level. If you're already past B2 you don't need to worry about forgetting much. The newer the language is, the faster you forget it. It will be up to you to make sure you study enough to maintain it or practice speaking and listening when you can. Time spent does not always equate progress, because one could spend time on passive learning and not really retain any useful info!

It is interesting, I have made the same experience with Lindie: The more advanced you are in a language, the easier to keep it gets. On the other hand, you might let your active skills go rusty if you do not work on them.
