I rig up a little apparatus to test oxygen absorbers. I start out with taking my 10-quart pressure canner and sticking about a 3' piece of 5/16" clear plastic tubing onto the regulator vent pipe, and sticking the other end of the tubing into a 1-liter Nalgene bottle. Nalgene bottles come printed with 100-milliliter graduations on the side. A milliliter is equal to a cubic centimeter. With the bottle filled to exactly the 1,000 milliliter mark with water, and a fresh OA sealed inside the pressure canner, I watch the water level in the Nalgene bottle drop as the OA creates a light vacuum inside the canner. The water level drop in the Nalgene bottle should be directly proportional to the volume of oxygen absorbed inside the canner. It takes a couple of days or more for the OA to absorb as much oxygen as it's going to. My pressure canner should hold about 2,000 cc of free oxygen, so I have plenty to work with there. I had to put tape over the rubber safety plug to insure a good seal there, and with my canner being an All-American there is no gasket on the lid. The Nalgene bottle and the canner rest on the same level surface.
