I am so happy to learn that I *can* grow clematis in a pot. I have 2 more clematis that I bought and would really rather not leave them behind in 2 yrs when we move to the family farm. Sorry but it's bad enough that I'm already having to leave behind so many gorgeous plants that I've planted over the last 8 yrs. 😕 I don't want to lose any more of them. LoL! So, thank you for letting me know that these last two clematis my husband bought me can be put in pots❣️ 💓 🕉Tina

For your middle urn, you could plug the Drainhole and fill soil lower than usual and plant things that tolerate wet soils. Papyrus grass, canna lilies, junctus and many rushes and sedges, basically you would have marginal pond plants up there. Papyrus even is a proven winners selection!

You should put some corkscrew rush in that middle urn! I rinsed all the soil off of my corkscrew rush and planted it directly in the water. You can also get floating basket pots to put plants in. I also have a bunch of water hyacinth, but I'm not sure if they're legal in Oregon.

you could try adding filter layers in the pot above the fountain so you can plant dirt plants inside(succulents or something that does not need frequent watering). You could try growing a pond plant/water loving plant in gravel/pebbles in the pot and adjust the fountain so that it flows into the pot(sort of like a hydroponic system). It depends on the setup of the fountain and water flow:-)

for your middle urn: 1. If the urn fills up with water and spills as a fountain, guess you can't plant in it unless you change the direction and placement of the water. I assume you could slip a pot into the urn as long as water hoses direct the water around the outside edges of the pot. It would be like connecting a triple or quadruple channel to the water coming into the pot and then directed those 3 or 4 hoses up the sides of the urn and around the pot. No one would see the hoses or the pot if they were dark colored. 2. If the urn has a spray of water that plumes over into the pool below, you can attach pvc pipe to the water source and get your spray above the height of planting area in the urn itself. IOW, your pipe would run up the middle of the urn/soil to above the height of your flowers to then plume over them into the pool. You will have to make sure that drainage of the soil is done into pea gravel in the bottom of your urn and does not leak out. You'll need to make the urn water tight with silicone. And you'll have to rely on evaporation to empty extra water from watering your plants....which will be less than usual. 3. If the urn can be made water tight with silicone like above, you can always plant in a container that you simply slip down into the urn. When you water, it drains into the urn and again, you will rely on evaporation to get rid of extra water. 4. Last option is to make the whole design to be aged and antique. Allow moss to grow and don't clean the pool area beneath. Put fish in it or plants in it, painting it dark first with concrete stain or a rubber sealant. That way, you can plant in the urn, allow water to drain strained through pea gravel and cheesecloth so that large particles are kept inside the urn You won't be concerned if dirty water gets into the pond area and you can even put a filtered material bag over your pump to prevent any clogging. Your backyard looks european and this option would be the one I choose. I have a front fountain that leaves fall into and decompose. I've simply painted the inside black and the fountain is a dark stained concrete. The water that falls, while dirty for sure, does not look dirty as it's falling. Moss grows on the north side and I love the "been there forever" look.

hello, love your videos! how to amend soil each year in the pot when the plants are still growing? what if the roots are really big and it's hard to dig more soil out? (our landscaper in the previous 3 years never amend our soil and I never add any fertilizers, so their roots got really big. can you make a video about how to amend soil in the pot with plants in it? thanks a million!

So I recently purchased an Endless Summer Hydrangea and I put it in a pot since we are uncertain of how long we will live at this location. I was talking with a worker from menards who said she changes her soil every year. It will be a year for me in the summer and id love to give them a good head start this year, BUT I have no clue how to go about changing the soil, im way to worried about damaging the plant. Any tips? Is it necessary?

- I bought a Hydrangea 3 years ago and planted it in full sun. Every year it blooms and look's great except it never grows. I've used Miracle Grow and made sure it's alway's had plenty of water. It was around 3 feet when I got it and hasn't grown 6 inches. Is there something I can do for this?, -Thanks

My Annabelle hydrangea is 25 years old and the Past few years the center of the plant has become very sparse…but the plant itself is growing well around the perimeter and outward…in fact,I have had to dig out from the edges because it is crowding out the other plants in my garden. It receives morning sun and afternoon shade and blooms very well, grows in a sandy soil. I have not been very good at fertilizing it. Any suggestions?

Our winters can be brutal, if I do a hydrangea in a container do I need to bring it indoors for the winter?
@gardenanswer
@gardenanswer 8 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't bring it all the way inside (they do need a cold period), but I would move it somewhere protected, wrap the container with something like burlap or bubble wrap, and remember to water it every 2-3 weeks so the roots don't dry out! :)

@ThorKipperberg
@ThorKipperberg 7 жыл бұрын
yes,and no! hehe if you keep them on the cool side and not to dry , absolutley,. but hydrangeas can be tricky,. especially in hot and dry conditions like in a living room,. they prefer cool, light areas if keept inside,. not in direct sunlight as direct sun will dry and burn them,. these plants are outdoor plants originally. outside they can thrive,but some of the species are frost tender, and need covering and care to bloom, otherwise frost might kill off the buds and you only get leaves when they kick back in the spring. Also wrong pruning is also often a cause of them not blooming. species that are frost tender and often pruned wrong are the Macrophylla family, as they tend to bloom on last years wood. There are some "modern" species in this family that are grown to also bloom on new and old wood , like endless summer etc,. these will bloom on new and old wood, if keept in the right conditions and keept from bare frost to kill off the branches,. cover the plants up in the late fall before frost and they mightl give you a wonderfull bloom and growth in years to come,.. also hydrageas dont thrive very well in hot and dry conditions these plants are loving, humid soils and cool not to hot summer, during late autumn often wet and mild weather and sudden drops of temperatures is very often a huge challenge to keep these plants(macrophylla), especially the further north you go, and in coastal areas where the weather is often changing .The worst climate for these plants are often changing weather, especially during the winter months, especially changing between dry to wet, and you suddenly get longer dry periods of bare frost. these conditions are huge flower bud killers.And not only that. but it often makes the whole plant freeze down to the ground, and when it reshoots in the spring, you only get brances of leaves with no blooms, another killer is during spring. long periods of dry weather with low tempertures, sunshine and frost during night is a huge huge tree and plant killer so if your plants are not protected from the enviroments they often die of this,. and whats left is dry branches. hydrangeas often get huge damages from these conditions so protect your plants and you might have a great success of keeping them.

I think that none blooming hydrangea might bloom on old wood only and the cold winter killed the buds on last year's old wood or the old wood was pruned along with all the buds

Dear Laura, I'm desperate to find information on how to sow Echinopsis seeds brought to me by my son when he was coming back from Miami. I am living in Datca, on the most southwestern tip of Turkey, on the Mediteranean. Temp nowadays is 36 to 42 C (95 -105 F), and the humidity 60 to 72 percent. Any information will be highly appreciated. I wanted to add pictures of the flowers of my most recent flowering cactus but no luck. I will do that soon. Thank you

If the Hydrangea person's hydrangea is dying out each year and coming back in spring, this could be an issue. If their plant blooms on old wood then she/he will never get blooms.
