A protip if you want to become a Voip wizard is to experiment around with Freeswitch which is an open source "build your own anything VOIP" tool, if you want to be the guy who knows voip and sip concepts like the back of your hand. I used to do a lot of Cisco and ShoreTel work until I met these freeswitch guys who could literally build their own phone systems and voice recognition apps, custom soft clients, things which would normally cost big $$$ and be considered enterprise. plenty of experience to be gained going down the pure cisco path but if you want to be able to do really cool stuff its a path worth exploring if not for the knowledge alone.

Thanks for the tip. I've never heard of FreeSwitch and will have to read up on that a bit more.

I have a suggestion for a video that will not only help myself but other entry level IT employees. How to find out your career level? Like how do you know when it's that time to move on from entry level and take a jr level position and when it's time to move from a jr level position to senior level? Should it be a certain amount of years you should wait before moving up?

Interesting and good question. I'll see if I can put together a video on this topic. Thanks for watching!

Hi William, great videos. I have a question about contract positions. I believe I saw a video where you mentioned using staffing agencies and I have. It seems that they are good for hiring you for a short time and when there is no need for you they end your contract all of a sudden because, your considered at will. I've have had two contract positions since I've started my IT career. It seems once my contract ends it's tough finding a new position. The two positions were Help Desk Technician. Do you think is the new way of hiring IT personnel without adding much commitment?

Hi Charles. I think I remember you from awhile back..thanks for continuing to watch. Yes I do have a video on this topic. Contract work is a great way to get your foot in and easier to find. Alot of companies are using contractors for various reasons and it's very common to have short term contracts. Although some of the companies with either extend the contract OR hire you on full time depending on if they like your work, etc. So what you're experiencing is quite normal. Continue to forge ahead and you'll find something permanent eventually. You might want to watch that video just as a refresher.

Hi!, What do you think of working IT specialist/Systems Admin onboard? Cruise companies provide such positions. Is it kind of primitive or not? Have you heard something about it? Thank you in advance!

I think that would be an awesome job if you can handle being on a boat for 6 months at a time.

This is a little off subject. Have you heard of Field Nation? Is ok for the newbie that just got a cert? I just recently got my mcitp mcts mcse certs and I cannot leave my current job due to my buying a home in the near future, longevity reasons. I am trying to find part time for the experience. Any info can help. Thanks

Hello Michael. It's been awhile since I've seen you in the comments. I looked at the Field Nation website and it looks familiar. I haven't heard anything about them as far as legitimacy but it might be worth checking out. If you do, please let me know how it goes so that I can suggest it to others. If it's legit, I would think its a great entry into the field.
