You ought to be also giving the symbols that show a vowel is either long or short (ā, ă) so students can associate long & short within your growing list of words with more than your simply telling them, or with more than the word "long" or "short" in the heading.
@coachshanesesl9 жыл бұрын
I love everyone's comments regarding pronunciation. But I warn you--while I LOVE my Webster dictionary, "real life English" often does NOT parallel the "proper pronunciation" presented in our beloved, lexical tomes. After teaching listening skills with American news and TV shows since 1993 (and I still do!), I can tell you that that's the sad fact! Also, I warn students, regarding the schwa sound, it often takes three different forms--but that's something I teach when we meet specific examples. The Prescriptive approach and Descriptive approach to language acquisition will rarely unite!!

I've learned that there's a rule for when the vowel is long and when it's short. If the vowel comes before a voiced consonant (a consonant that the vocal cords vibrate when pronouncing it, like 'm', 'l', 'r') the vowel is long, whereas when it comes before a voiceless consonant (like "t', 's', 'f') it's short.

Actually spanish vowels are extremely easy to learn, they have very distinct and separate sounds from each other and they are just five: (A) (E) (I) (O) (U): ah, eh, ee, oh, ooh. And that's it :)
@alanisvberrios7 жыл бұрын
floopy312 i always like to remind people that, there are what we call diptongo, hiatos, triptongos, etc. That manipulate some words so we basically have 5 sounds for each vowel but in combination of other letters and whatnot, they change a bit, and also the influence of accents and pronunciation in each country. Good day! 😊
@carlosprada48526 жыл бұрын
thank you, spanish sounds are easy, even with diphthongs still we pronounce both vowels equally. We are not talking here about accents, only vowel sounds. English grammar is easy, but that's where the bucket stops.

Just 5 vowel sounds for Spanish!!!
@rogeriochamorro11464 жыл бұрын
People think that Portuguese is similar to Spanish. That's only in the written part. The pronunciation is more complicated than in Spanish and make Portuguese sound completely different from Spanish. In Portuguese the pronunciation of vowels and consonants depend on the position of letters in a given word, diacritics and the previous and the following letter. In Portuguese, we have 14 pure vowel sounds, 9 diphthongs and 23 pure consonant sounds. English has 12 pure vowels sounds, 13 diphthongs and 24 consonant sounds. Spanish has only 5 vowel sounds, 6 diphthongs and 19 consonant sounds. That's the reason why most of the time Portuguese speakers understand Spanish speakers but not vice versa.

Hello, great job, coach. Just a little info, in spanish we only have 5 vowel sounds. That is why english is so confusing to us, in many cases an obvious difference for you may sound the same to us. Its gonna take us practice, but what you do in these videos is just amazing.

Hi, correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that the short form of O shown in the video, such as hot, shot, father, is a long O if you compare it to the shua. Compare cop and cup, hot and hut, and of course be careful with slot there.

The most difficult is to make difference between short "A" and short "E" as in "bad" X "bed" or "man" X "men". For me they are the hardest ones. Thanks for the tips!
@Punkrockaddicted9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. I found it interesting but I think it's not a very accurate description. To start with, what I understand as the short u (book, put, pull), and the vowel for word, burn, bird are not included. If it helps anybody this is how I deal with it: Short i: sit, bit, slip Long i: seat, beat, sleep. Short a: sat, bat. cat Long a : arm, bar, car Short e: bed, dead, lead Long e: burn, world, bird Short o: got, slot, dot Long o: bought, saw, law Short u: could, put, would Long u: cool, pool, tool Schwa: for unaccented vowels in normal speed english, and very similar to the pronunciation of but, cut, shut
@luisg123v9 жыл бұрын
Punkrockaddicted Man, you're completely wrong. 1) your long i examples (like in sleep) are really long e sounds; A long i would be "price". 2) Your long a examples (like in car) are really "ar" sounds. Remember that when a vowel are before an r, the resulting sounds are completely different. The same happens with your long e examples (like in burn). 3) Your long o examples (like saw) are really a aw sounds. 4) Your short u examples (like in put) are really short oo sounds.

To me the most difficult vowel to master is the short "i" (as in 'sit' or 'rid'). I can't distinct it from the "e"vowel (as found in 'bed' or 'get').What's worse when I try to make this sound it either sounds like "e" or "ee"(as in 'beat'or 'seat").Can somebody help me?
@LittleMisSpringfield8 жыл бұрын
+pratap sahu It is all about the production of the sound. I can be a little confusing, for 'e' and 'i¨being both the front vowels. But, in case of 'e' in e.g. bed you just open your mouth and your tongue basically doesn't move upward from the jaw. On the other hand, in case of 'i' in e.g. bid, your lips are not round, but they are more spread (like if you were smiling) and your tongue goes upward. And your jaw goes up as well. Try it by yourself and you'll feel the difference :)

Thank you. however, I have a question about the sound of orange or auburn , the first vowel of the words, o or au should belong to which catogory of the Long or Short vowels? As far as I know that it doesn't belong to the long O sound.
@coachshanesesl5 жыл бұрын
Depends on the dialect! Google's first recommendation is with a LONG O + R but MW's first is with the AU sound. Long vowels CHANGE when they are influenced by an R. I talk about that in my classes.
@jetli45125 жыл бұрын
Colored Vowel is not correct in this case, the word orange pronunced as /ɔ/ , and colored vowel sounds like /ɚ/ per your google's first recommendation that doesn't make sense. May I know which dictionary you applied exactly? Thanks@@coachshanesesl
