Boy you hit the nail on head on the Laiv dac. I heard the Laiv Harmony and it sounds is very similar to the Holo May spring 3. It's just as rich in tonal balance, with a bit more micro detail retrieval. Additionally, your advice on considering synergy within the system is critical to our purchasing decision on any one component. Love the spur of the moment blog. Thanks Jay.

I own the Harmony LAIV DAC and it is amazing in every way possibly. That includes transparency, sound stage, and size. I heard the Terminator Plus in my system and I like the LAIV better. It has a much fuller sound. The fact that they can accomplish this in a down scaled enclosure should be a credit to them. To use size and weight to determine how a DAC or any electronic equipment should sound is shocking. The size and weight of wax in our ears is a more logical reason for the sound quality we hear than the size and weight of electronic equipment.
@Jayiyagi3 ай бұрын
So basically just as I’ve said. “Warmer” than Denafrips. I’m glad you like it more 👍 You have to put things into context. I am not suggesting size and weight is a determining factor in sound quality. However what matters in a dac (PSU, output stage, dac implementation) makes it highly unlikely that a compact unit will outperform a full sized dac with a separate psu underneath it. Your preference is a different matter and like I said, the rest of the system and synergy matters more. For example; the pre-amp or streamer you used may have been just a better match to your LAIV Dac and not the terminator.
@explet1ve3 ай бұрын
@@Jayiyagi As always, thank you for the video. I understand your point on hardware but using that logic - a Mola Mola Tambaqui could also never compete with the large DACs you mention like a Terminator+ since it is half the size and doesn't have a separate (dual?) PSU underneath it? If your subjective listening puts the Laiv in the same category as a Pontus then that is of course 100% fine. However, the way this comparison was presented, comes across that you may have been biased against it based on form factor from the start. Just some feedback, thanks again for taking the time to create the video!

I think you did a hell of a job! I've owned a LAiV Harmony DAC for about 3 weeks now. It was a bridge to chipset (sound) of Marantz CD and Aurender AK 4490. I consider it an upgrade to those but more importantly, a conservative monetary bridge to much higher level DACS (as you've mentioned). I (sort of) like/love listening to music, mostly classical and jazz and I seek good balance of presentation but all the while, I know that it (the seeking/searching) is an artifact; a device that approaches the playing of live music. That said, it's such a slippery slope. I give all of you youtube channel presenters (Steve G, Steve H, John D, ) a lot of credit in your own personal search and that you have endeavored to share it with us. Thank you. Excellent preview of the LAiV Harmony DAC and its place in the landscape. I have had this DAC for several weeks now. Your estimate of warmth being between the Holo Audio and Denafrips house sound makes sense to me, and that was the sound I was looking for. I feed it I2S from a Singxer SU-6 into a passive attenuator, then into an Orchard Audio DMC Ultra 2.0. I know that you have left your "Studio Monitor" days behind, but I am using a pair of Amphion Two18, which I love. I made a conscious decision to get color from the source, rather than a preamp or amp (or speakers for that matter). The Amphions are not a warm sounding speaker, but the Harmony gives me that delightful taste of sweetness that I normally associate with Single Ended Triode amps (Decware), but just a taste, and for me, just enough. One of the things I love about the Harmony DAC is that you can change the sound profile by your choices. I find that in my setup, I prefer the I2S for source, but I clock it locally in the Harmony, not using the I2S clocking from the Singxer SU-6. (NOS mode is my favorite) This may have to do with cable choice (Audioquest Carbon HDMI). I was not going to spend over $1,000 for the top of the line cables that the Golden Ear crowd love so much. Probably my favorite thing is that, because I use my PC for everything, the Harmony is not overly analytical for KZbin, Netflix, etc. However, when I use HQPlayer software to upsample music files, the Harmony performs at another level!!! For the first time I can now see myself accumulating a library of music files just for listening. My other DACs have all been Studio style, and "Mastering Grade" DACs (depending on which marketing department positions the products). For myself, with my minimalist, hyper clarity style listening chain, the LAiV Harmony hits my sweet spot in the Resolution/Tonality/Price matrix. :)

Hi Jay, very good conclusion and agree!! People tend to chase around YT-reviewers and just make their opinion based on their findigs! I'm someone a bit crazy around DAC/Streamers, also in higher price ranges and as you refer to Denafrips and Holo, DAC's in the $3 - $8k range are extremely competetive and matter of persoanal flavor. Where in my opinion price vs technology innovations ends and we are just talking about battle of *brands*, its around $15-25k. Yes, as somone owend several DACs in this range (MSB, dCS, Aries Cerat and having a *revealing* hifi chain) I honestly must say: makes sounxwise no sense anymore, just matter of owning it 😉 what I'd be also interested if you have started into looking into legacy, higher end music Server (not talking about Taiko or something like that).as a crazy digital hifi Person, have started with an Le Reunion brand music Server and diretta protocol with an SPEC USB bridge and quiet impressed. Really good DAC Designs with serious analogue output stage make for me a difference, but also my experience feeding DACs with different streaming sources can be quiet surprising. Also comparing USB/i2s vs SPDIF/AES-EBU is important to test for each brand, a lot of surprising effects!

There seems to be some confusion about i2s (in some comments). I2s IS used internally within CD players, etc., but what separates i2s as a communications protocol BETWEEN COMPONENTS is when i2s is used internally, the pathways are short, so can usually be direct. The electrical distance when used between separate components is too far, but that's when an LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signal) transmitter and receiver is used. The chips were traditionally used for video purposes, but PS Audio developed the method of using LVDS transmitters/receivers to use between their Perfectwave Transport and DAC many years ago, and made the tech behind it "open source" rather than putting a patent on it - and the rest is history. So when people complain about i2s only capable of short distance communication, that is sort of true, but the reality is that it is a PROTOCOL (not method), and the use of LVDS transmitters/receivers is what gives the ability to use the PROTOCOL over greater distances.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. About the May vs Terminator + comparison, it’s worth adding that right know there is a huge price disparity between those two DACs -Denafrips have been increasing their prices lately. The T+ is US$7,600, while the May KTE is $5,600 and the Level 2 is $4,800. Jay, I know you did your videos on those DACs some years ago, but given the current price difference, do you think the sonic difference between them is reflected in their respective prices? Appreciate your opinion.

Yes and no. I do not appreciate the price increase on Denafrips. Especially now that they have cut out the middle man (vinshine audio), I don't understand why there is a price increase, if anything I was expecting a price decrease. I plan to ask them directly but the Denafrips rep I am dealing with seem to have a pretty heavy language barrier... However, to answer your question; unfortunately, like I said these two DACs are pretty different in its sound signature and so depending on application and the system choice... it might be the only viable option as the May Dac is not really a replacement but a competition at flagship prices with a different sound signature

Is Hans allowed to keep the equipment he reviews? Most reviewers get to keep the equipment they review and that creates a conflict of interest. Therefore, it opens up the possibility that a product is praised or trashed based on money. Higher priced equipment manufacturers have an interest in lower priced competitor items to be trashed. There must be a disclaimer with every review stating whether a reviewer is paid by being allowed to keep the equipment they write about.
