for new chain , i leave it in thinner over a night, most of grease is out, rest of it will get out by hot waxing in some 10 times. mix of grease and wax inside of chain are not a problem, only important is that chain is not dry

A thoroughly degreased chain is an absolute requirement for drip waxing. The water-based liquid will just not flow into the gaps of an oily chain. With hot waxing it's much simpler, the remaining greases dissolve in molten paraffin wax. I wash the chain in solvent (Nefras 80/120) for some 5 minutes, then dip it in the hot wax for 5 minutes. Works great.

I'll definitely be trying petrol for my next chain. I tried multiple runs with degreaser through a Park Tool chain cleaning tool, followed by shaking the chain then soaking it in a few jars of degreaser until clear, then the same with methylated spirits, and after soaking it, the methylated spirits were crystal clear. So I thought it was all good. But after applying Squirt brand drip on wax lube, the wax residue turned black and gunky after a while 😞 Easy to clean and with hot water and wax & grease remover, then reapply, but I'll definitely try petrol for a super hardcore cleaning next time, and I've got the slow cooker waiting, and have ordered some wax and PTFE for future use. Live and learn!

I know why it failed for me, I live in the UK riding mostly on wet, dirty, gritty roads! I'd rather degrease with GT85 and re-lube with engine oil (as good as any and way cheaper) every ride or every wet ride over 30 miles.

Does this apply also to mountain biking? does wax also stay long in the presence of mud and water etc? cheers

Wax does work in mud and water as well, but you need to rewax after each muddy or rainy ride if you want the chain to last. Oiled chains need to be deep cleaned and revised after such rides either, but for some reason lots of riders ignore this 🤪

Rule #1A - the DRIVETRAIN must be perfectly clean. Otherwise it will simply transfer its grease & grime to your freshly waxed chain.

"The required deep cleaning doesn't happen for free" Nah mate, that's called price skimming. Like sure it's not even close to free, but it doesn't cost $70 at scale, absolutely not.
