Wouldn't "minmax happiness and suffering" mean "minimum happiness and maximum suffering"? Or is that what you just described?
@icarue9934 жыл бұрын
@@frostburnspirit9065 Depends on how you decode it. It could mean min happyness/suffering and max the otherone. Max both and min the rest, etc. Example of the second one is: in D&D, minmaxing a fighter, means minmaxing str and con. Which means dump int, wis, cha etc. You really wouldn't say to minmax str and int, for example.
@Squirrel3544 жыл бұрын
@@icarue993 Actually, in this context ge is referring to a specific programming technique, and it always involves 2 parameters, one to minimize and the other to maximize, so it would mean minimizing happiness/suffering and maximizing the other. In defense of music, While some styles have much repetition and patterns with certain motifs such as classical and baroque, music is typically derived from expression, something which jazz does just as much as other musical styles. While jazz, to an extent, is associated with improv, that doesn't mean it has no pattern. If anything, they're all about manipulating patterns in a way that sounds good while expressing what the musician(s) wants to convey, the same way a classical composer would. ***Note***: Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but stating that jazz has no pattern isn't completely accurate, Grey.

@3:10 What, you really don't get pointers? Ok sure, they're often explained poorly. So here's a little rundown that might help I think (Either you Grey, or someone else) With little exception and missing the tiniest of nuance, this will cover just the basic concept, not necessarily any specific implementation... all the data on a computer exists at integer numbered addresses, starting from 0 and going up to n, missing no addresses in between. At each address lives a single number. As a programmer what you'll often want to do is refer to addresses. For example, you might say "Set address 127 to the value 99". At the heart of pointers is simply using values to write in the address to other values. So let's say the contents of your RAM are as follows: 1,2,3,4,5,6,0 Each number is addressed from 0 to 6, so at address 0 is 1, at address 1 is 2, and so on. And you write a program that says something like... "Get the value at address 0. Then use that value as an address, and get the value from the RAM there, and do this over and over again." (I know, very technical coding terms) So what that would look like to the computer is... get the value at address 0. What's there? It's a 1. Now I have a 1, and I'm supposed to use that as an address to find the next number. so what's at address 1? It's a 2. Now I'm supposed to use that to find yet the next number. so what's at address 2? It's a 3. And so on until we hit address 6, where a 0 is stored. So what's at address 0? It's a 1. And on and on it goes forever. (just fyi this is verrrry basically, a "Linked List", where every entry in the list has a pointer to the next entry.) You might be wondering WTF does this have to do with pointers I don't get it? Pointers are like, *ThingPointer @(((int)PointerHell)))->StuffWtfIDKHelp.MeIm->Dying; Which, is fair enough. Using raw addresses like in my example is really difficult, so people invented variables, a way of referring to things by a text name, rather than an address. So instead of writing something like "Set address 127 to 99", you might say "Set velocity to 99". Where is velocity located? Don't worry about it, that's the computer's job! But if you really must know, that's where pointers come in. So we can say, "Get the address of Velocity", which we'll suppose is 127. Then you could say "Set address 127 to 99" and it works just the same. But again remembering addresses like that is hard, so let's say... "Set Pointer to the address of Velocity", where is Velocity? Address 127. So now Pointer is equal to 127. Then we can say, "Get the value of Pointer, and use it as an address to write 99 to". The computer will, behind the scenes, say "Ah you want the value of Pointer. That's 127. Now you want to use that and set address 127 to the value 99." And so the net effect of "Use the value of Pointer as an address to write 99 to" is that address 127 now contains 99. ...I, strongly get the impression this won't help much, in part because I don't actually know what your hang up was; did you misunderstand what pointers are, or just find it confusing to keep track of so many things pointing to things pointing to things pointing to yet more things? Maybe an animation would be more helpful... if anyone pesters me enough, I'll do it. Or doodle on a whiteboard web page with you, whatever. Either way I hope this helps someone.

I don't know, I'm also a physicist who hates having to deal with pointers and I just don't like having to think about the internal workings of the computer, like I don't want to have to think about how it's pointing to where it is stored I just want it to be stored and done with and never really understood why the pointers were necessary. Yet there they are in the code I have to use and write.

It's simply that CPGrey has no taste in art, he sees everything from a purely mechanical point of view. It's why he suggests we try to "live forever", even though it's no more feasible than it has ever been. More people are living longer, but we haven't yet found a way to extend the natural lifespan, or preserve ailing old minds. And, if you're going to artificially extend the brain's biological limit, then how can you even dileneate between a soul and a function? Death is inevitable, be it by silicone or guillotine, the blood will stop pumping through your head eventually.

>Says Jazz has no structure and repetition *takes a deep breath* Well, actually... *You Died - however the Nexus traps you; you shall remain in this world as a soul, forever* Ok - maybe some types of jazz, but I get the feeling you haven't really been exposed to a lot of jazz if you think it lacks structure. It's not always an obvious structure, but standard hard bop has a pretty well-defined palette with which to play. It usually involves a melody or hook, which players take turns soloing over until everybody on stage has had their moment to reinterpret the melody - then there's a big finish. It's actually more rigid than it seems. You may find it "anti-useful;" there's no quick way to learning to appreciate jazz and you probably have things you would rather be doing. But your opinion here is either misinformed or not explained thoroughly. I would like to hear more about your concept of "musical mind control." I don't think you're wrong, I just want to know more of what you think about that.

Sad to hear you don't like jazz, Glad to hear you have a solid reason for not liking it, I will argue that jazz is nothing but patterns, but not, and that's honestly the best way I can describe it. It's weird because that's how my head likes to work too, in patterns, and improvisation was hard for me at first until I started to find the patterns, bit even then, you can't do the same thing every time
@alexshih37476 жыл бұрын
Actually, jazz has quite a bit of repetition of patterns if you look hard enough; it's just not very obvious. Everything from rhythmic patterns to melodies to harmony is repeated in some way in most jazz music. If it didn't have very much repetition, jazz would be an incoherent musical mess. People who don't know very much about jazz like to think that you can pretty much do whatever you want in jazz and it'll still sound good, but that's a misinformed opinion. Jazz may sound free, but it has a rigid backbone that gives it coherence and stops it from being musical gelatin.

Strideo1 his slight knowledge about about jazz almost killed me... It can have structures and be repetitive(come on!artists like L. Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald etc etc etc) and also not, thats's probably why it is so diverse and why I love it!
@Strideo16 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm not big on really "out there" avant-garde jazz but I love Miles Davis (especially early Miles Davis), Chett Baker, Billie Holiday, Dave Brubeck, Benny Goodman, and more, the ones you mentioned too! And the songs they perform are typically full of pattern and repetition and repeating hooks and melodies. In addition to the important role jazz played in American pop culture I also love how far ahead jazz was in racial integration too. Benny Goodman made sure to bring in talented black musicians who weren't even in his band for his famous Carnegie Hall concert. Dave Brubeck cancelled a lot of concerts in southern venues when he was told he wasn't allowed to perform with black musicians in his band on the same stage. Jazz musicians, like a lot of musician, intermingled and cared more about the talent than the politics. My wife wasn't really into jazz when we first met but she really loves it now. I think a lot of people just don't know where to start or aren't exposed to the right jazz music and then just dismiss it, sadly.

It isn't a bunch of squeaking out random notes, there is a lot of deep structure.
@GraveUypo6 жыл бұрын
i was surprised to learn there are people that actively dislike jazz. it thought it was one of those more or less neutral and universal music genres that while most people don't love, no one really hates. specially when there are so many popular songs today lacking a melody entirely. what the fuck, i don't get how anyone can find hearing that shit actually pleasing. stuff like brazillian funk. seriously makes me sick to my stomach.

@wardedthorn65236 жыл бұрын
Impius Queso Not to be that guy, but...entropy is not energy. Sure, it is related to the energy "consumed" by a reactiom, but it is not energy. It's a measure of chaos, or the amount of valid arrangements of a given system. For instance, given four items that are assigned numbers, if they all have the same number, they can only be arranged one way, while increasing the amount of variation increases the permutations. In this example, the more varied the numbers, the higher the entropy.
