1.48* I think the "get rid of foreign languages" idea only works in countries where English is the sole official language (Australia, US, UK and some Carribean nations only). Here in the Netherlands we have English as a school subject just as important as Dutch and We should be able to communicate in English since we're a small country that is pretty close with other countries that speak English or countries that learn English too.

US doesn't have an official language either, though there is no good reason why it is not English. I get annoyed when I go to a store and the computer asks me if I want English or Spanish. I do think that foreign languages are important and speak enough to get by, which in this area of the world means Spanish, but there's really not any reason to not know or at least make an effort to know English in the US.

@Ruminations098 жыл бұрын
Allow me explain why Farhenheit is the clearly superior temperture scale: -- 0 degrees - In Farenhiet, this is really cold In Celcius, it's just relatively cold - 100 degrees - In Farenhiet, this is really hot In Celcius, you're dead before you even have time to feel how hot it is -- Farenhiet is really convienient in that you're usually only working between 0 and 100, and if you're ever above or below that, you know it's REALLY hot or REALLY cold. With Celcius, on the other hand, you're usually working between -20 and 40. Do you not realize how arbitrary that boundary is? -- Also, an added bonus: Since Farenhiet uses a smaller scale, it allows you to be more specific about what the temperture is without having to use any more significant figures.
@Lionbug8 жыл бұрын
The biggest argument for why Celsius (or, well, Kelvin) is far superior is of course - cause everyone uses it. Although I would accept that Celsius doesn´t have any actual benefits like the other metric units do. And when you´re using the metric system, then having 0 as the freezing point of the most important thing on earth and 100 as its boiling point is really intuitive. Also, if you need the degrees precise down to the decimal, you would also need a decimal in Fahrenheit. So basically to me it comes down to : the metric system is FAR superior, ergo Celsius (another starting point for the metric unit Kelvin) is superior. Hope I was able to make myself understood with my english :)
@Ruminations098 жыл бұрын
Lion Reichelt You never need to use the freezing or boiling point of water with metric specifically. Thus your entire point is invalid.

Awsomedylan Well boiling point depends on elevation. But I like Fahrenheit mainly because I am use to it. But also the difference between 20 and 0 just doesn't seem like much. The difference between 70 and 32 seems like quite a bit more, which to me there is a big difference between 70 and 32. I guess its physiological. All in the head...nothing more.
@miramerci11 жыл бұрын
724Broncofan I always thought of degrees Celsius as temperature in relation to water. 0 is the point of becoming ice, and 100 is the point of condensation. While humans do not become neither ice nor steam, I think of degrees Fahrenheit as the human breaking points. Though less clearly defined, and dependent on what environment you are used to, 0 degrees and 100 degrees are typically enough to start medical conditions. :) (Note: I am a European living in America, so I am able use the terms interchangeably! Most of the time, I use Fahrenheit for the weather and speaking to others, and Celsius for cooking and science.)

Bunny And water boils at 100ish degrees Celsius under the Earth's atmosphere. Change the air pressure a bit by moving to a house on a mountain or living in California, and the temperature required to boil water will shift a little bit. The 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit quoted temperature for the human body isn't perfectly constant either. It can vary by degree or more. Babies have can have a body temperature as high as 100.4 degrees and still be within normal range.

+Eriochi you're wrong that to say it was developed with three reference points, it was only developed with two (freezing point of brine, and human body temperature), since it's only coincidental that a linear system will travel through an arbitrary third point. Anyway you are right that using human body temperature as one of the points does make it a useful system in some cases. Of course the modern definition of the fahrenheit scale is just a shifted and scaled version of the kelvin scale.

PokemonTom09 The problem is that the 'landmark' points in Fahrenheit don't really make sense in science. 0F is the freezing point of a saltwater solution. What's not specified is how much salt to use (or, for that matter, whether the salt even has to BE sodium chloride). 100F is the human body temperature, but that's also inaccurate. What part of the body is this temperature taken from? Is the person being tested for temperature in Africa or the Arctic? Meanwhile, 0C and 100C make sense. Water is an easily-available liquid with consistent properties. It's already the standard for many other metric measurements (for example, water has a density of 1 gram per cubic centimetre), and it has clear, defined freezing and boiling points.

To be honest, I feel like the reason why you think the age based education system is bad is because you're smart and you'd benefit from a different one. I, on the other hand, am dumb and lazy and probably wouldn't have gotten far without the incentive of a school that forces me to keep up. Also I would have liked to learn programming, but I also love languages, and having an international translator is completely inefficient and practically impossible in most uses of language other than very standardized written language and is also not the point of learning another language. I would fight you to death on that one and urge you to find another class to leave out. And, actually, it might make sense in English speaking countries, but in any other country, teaching English at an early age is extremely useful and important and can hugely benefit the children in question and improve their future lifestyles. Same for bilingual countries or cities.
@RKNGL9 жыл бұрын
Well the ranking into a skill system would have to fit more then just a test. Since us lazy people might have way less motivation, though I might not me stupid motivation is a huge issue that would be done away with with this system. I agree it is good to learn foreign languages a lot of the problems lies in when they teach foreign language. If people are going to learn another language it should be when they are younger.
@dex5x9 жыл бұрын
If your dumb and lazy but the age base system moves you along anyway you are just set up for failure because most classes ,especially math, you need to understand prior lessons to be any good so being held back until you learn those lessons would make it so you could actually learn rather than just get through school

There is a genuine reason why we group kids by age in school- if you grouped them by ability, you are creating A hierarchy, which sucks for the people on the bottom. This is backed up by the sociological research that suggests that children with less ability improve over time in mixed ability classes but get worse in classes where everyone is equally bad, research I'm surprised you have'nt studied if you have a degree in sociology, since I'm in my second year of studying sociology at (uk) college and Bowles & Gintis was the first piece of school research we studied. Other then that, great video! (Seriously though- Fahrenheit? Did you say that just to start a flame war, or...)
@FunkyDouch300010 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you have never been at the other end of the spectrum, in other words it sounds like you have never experienced the pain of being in a class you are way ahead of. It absolutely kills motivation for the best and brightest being held back in their favorite fields because they're not old and "advanced" enough for more advanced classes when they by all laws of reason should. There is a reason I hated secondary school, (several, really, but that is another story,) and that is that I was far too advanced for many of my classes, meaning I had to sit through curriculum I either already knew or I could have learned far, far faster than what I was allowed to by the curriculum and teaching methods. you know what happens when you intellectually hold people back who need to develop their minds? they can become depressed, unhappy, lose motivation, lose interest in things they found fascinating before, and it can in extreme cases lead to suicide. Still prefer that age group system? Another thing regarding the weakest students together: That is not quite how this would work, instead of being put in a "weaker" group they would instead pass on said subject until they're ready for it and placed in a group of fairly varying skill levels, but nothing like what our current systems are. No one is equally good at everything, so you might be 2-3 years ahead in math, and 2-3 years back in say English. This would be a brilliant system in a perfect world, but that is not how the world works. still a far better system than our current one though, I think.
@Thorntonian10 жыл бұрын
That's sadly not how it works in real life, as the genuine social studies I'd previously presented testify. Grouping kids by ability instantly creates a distinction in competence that affects the attitude of those being taught as well as those teaching. Take the Bowles and gintis study, which- to cut a long story short- proved that telling a teacher that a random child was a hidden genius improved that child's test scores in months, while other kids fell behind. And you're right, I never experience the anguish of being forced to spend time with mere mortals, being one myself, but it sounds to me like you're claim is being driven by your own experiences. And ego.
@FunkyDouch300010 жыл бұрын
Thorntonian ok, fair enough. Perhaps dividing kids by their abilities is not such a great idea, but at the very least they should be seen for whom they are, students with some academic abilities. for that matter everyone else should have their uniqe abilities and skills be noticed as well. the greatest crime our education system does (the norwegian one,) is that it sends every child down the same road in public school, never taking note of what they're good at,which in many cases leads to those students never realizing their full potential because they are afraid of overachieving and being looked down on by their classmates. this is more of a cultural problem than an academic one, but it does in many cases lead to being cast out socially. not the ideal solution either. I am curious to know what your thoughts on a good solution to this problem would be. You seem to have an interesting perspective.
@Thorntonian10 жыл бұрын
FunkyDouch3000 Easy. Smaller class sizes so that teachers give the students the level of attention they need, and a wider curriculum that captures more people's interests. And abolishing annual tests, which set unrealistic measurements. Oh- and universal free education. Because you're not going to pursue something that leavs you stripped for cash and "overqualified".
@FunkyDouch300010 жыл бұрын
Thorntonian I completly agree with everything except perhaps a wider curriculum. I don't think it's a good idea to force every single student through art, science, sports and so on unless they actually want to have those classes. but if you meant giving the students the freedom to choose from more classes and more in depth curriculum in the different classes, then yes. I would also add giving the teachers more freedom of running the class more the way they want to run it, instead of following a very strict curriculum and teaching plan, which makes the teacher proffesion a lot less atractive for students to choose. And universal free education is something most people will wholeheartedly agree on, myself included. Unfortunately, here in Norway at least, there is a critical lack of teachers, which means that making the classes smaller is physically impossible at this point in time in our country. there is also the problem of paying the teachers, in addition to more classrooms and equipment and what-not. Having teachers who can see to every student's individual needs is fantastic, unfortunately, with the way our education system is (the norwegian one,) that doesn't always happen. Our education system is terrible at noticing who the gifted students are (could be anything from science subjects to arts,) except for sports, and our cultural society makes it socially unacceptable being smarter or better than your classmates, further complicating the problem, which can also lead to being cast out socially. making it more of a cultural problem than an educational one, at least here in Norway. We live in an imperfect world, with imperfect conditions, and with politicians who do not work to solve these problems, but to get re-elected.

GREY! Whilst I realise you have a deep, personal love for science and technology, you really can't ditch Latin like that. It is the cornerstone language for so many others; I speak English, French and Icelandic and the only way of grouping them together is through my Latin education. Plus, it shows on your CV (which, by the way, comes directly from the Latin, curriculum vitae) that one is able to understand the mechanics and structure of a language whilst having the ability to learn volcabulary right from the page; no-one's first or second language is Latin.

I don't prefer Celsius because of science or metric or anything like that. I prefer it because of conformity. Most of the world uses Celsius, and I'm interested in getting to know more of the world. The way I learned to think in Celsius is by picking landmarks and assessing relative temperature from there. 0°C is cold as balls, 10°C is pretty chilly: early Spring or late Fall day in Washington, evening or night in Summer. 13°C is where I happen to feel most comfortable - I'm a cold/temperate weather kinda guy. 21°C is room temperature. 30°C is high Summer. Anything above 31°-32°C is very uncommon in Western Washington. Of course, living in Western Washington, I would use Fahrenheit to talk about the weather, but it is very rare that I ever find myself having little enough to do to justify talking about the weather. As far as I'm concerned, the only difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit when it comes to convenience is that Celsius has two prettier landmarks: 0° is water's freezing temperature and 100° is water's boiling temperature. So I learn both and use whichever one the people I'm talking to will better understand.
@christophertipuric226811 жыл бұрын
Can you tell me at what degrees Fahrenheit these landmarks are? I've never got the Fahrenheit system.
@mrchaserman3411 жыл бұрын
Christopher Tipuric 32 degrees is freezing, 50 degrees is pretty chilly, Darmekhanu prefers 55 degrees, room temp is around 70 degrees, and high summer(where he lives) is 86 degrees, but where I live in Iowa high summer is like 90-100. Where I live summers are hot as shit and winters are cold as shit, the temperature varies from like -15 to 100 degrees fahrenheit.

@doctorpc153110 жыл бұрын
***** well, 100 isn't the very best system, but because we use base 10, 100 is the square of the base, thus making it scale very well. And that is why 100 is such a nice number compared to 200. when you calculate anything with 200, most people usually do (2*the_same_calculation_but_using_100*) And to what do you even need 0,5C accuracy? That can ONLY benefit scientific studies, in which case they have absolutely no problem dropping a bunch of decimals in it. For everyday use even 0 freezing & 100 boiling wouldn't affect practically anything, so I don't know what you're talking about.

Yannick Weinz What's wrong with Fahrenheit? Both Fahrenheit and Celsius are equally arbitrary scales, you can't reasonably say that the freezing and boiling points of water are some sort of absolute standard for temperature. They aren't. The only absolute standard for temperature is absolute zero, but even then there is no truly non-arbitrary scale for temperature since the size of degrees in the Kelvin and Rankine scales are based off of the old arbitrary scales. So if Celsius and Fahrenheit are both arbitrary, the question is which is a more useful scale? I would make the argument that Fahrenheit is much more useful. The range of comfortable temperatures in degrees Cesius ranges from about 15 to 30. That's just 15 degrees where you live your life in. That range is degrees Fahrenheit is more like 60 to 90 - which gives you a much more useful amount of precision. And in Fahrenheit, the 100 degree mark actually means something to your life - 100 degrees is really freakin' hot weather. If the weather was 100 degrees Celsius, the lakes and rivers would be literally boiling. The only reason why you would encounter anything on the scale of 100 degrees C would be if you were cooking or burning something, in which case Fahrenheit again offers a nicer scale since increments of 100 and 50 are usefully spaced apart. In Celsius you're stuck digging down into the (usually unmarked) 25 degree increments if you want the same precision as 50 degree increments is Fahrenheit.
@ThatxOtherxDude9 жыл бұрын
We should use Kelvins
@Oinkmanfilms9 жыл бұрын
+DroidFreak36 in celsius the temperature often goes to -5 and 40. The accuracy of the weather's temp is less ambiguous (15 is obviously cooler than 20, but 30 is similar to 35 in farhenheit.) also no-one really needs accurate temperatures, so the point is kind of irrelivant. fahrenheit is based off the boiling of brine, while celsius is the boiling of normal water. celsius is clearly more useful because 0 makes sense as cold but 25 doesn't really make sense
@simsom43439 жыл бұрын
+DroidFreak36 Actually, celsius also has ".n" aka we don't only have full degrees (we also have degrees like: 14.5, 52.3 and so on), which means, a lot more precise. Also, what's the best scale? 0 = Freezing point of water, 100 = Boiling point of water... Or 0 = Really cold, 100 = Really hot In other words, celsius is a lot better.
@Forthelemon9 жыл бұрын
+Yannick Weinz Celsius wastes the first digit completely. In Fahrenheit, 10 is notably colder than 20, which is notably colder than 30, etc...and we use all the numbers, up to around one hundred, in our everyday lives to describe the weather. In Celsius, everything's around the -20 to 30-ish zone, which is just plain awkward. I use Celsius because it's what I grew up learning and it's what I'm used to, since I'm from Canada, but I absolutely see the value in Fahrenheit. However, sadly, it's much easier to get America to switch to Celsius than for the rest of the world to start using Fahrenheit, so for the sake of keeping things simple, Fahrenheit will have to go eventually.

Fahrenheit is incredibly ill-defined: 0 °F is the coldest brine Mr Fahrenheit could make at the time, and 100 °F is the average body temperature of some healthy adults he measured. In addition: Fahrenheit isn't a SI-unit, and doesn't convert as easily to Kelvin as Celsius does. While I would have liked for the world to switch to Kelvin, as that's an absolute temperature scale instead of relative, Celsius is the closest to Kelvin the world could agree on. Apart from the US obviously. Why anyone would prefer Fahrenheit, besides being used to it, is beyond me.

To those in the comments who want to be immortal, I say this: time is relative. A 1 year-old baby considers 1 year to be a very long time, as that is how long the baby has lived. A 63 year-old man considers 1 year to be much less significant, as he has already experienced 63 years; what's 1 more? If you were to live for, say, 10,000 years, months and years would be nothing to you. Cant remember anything you did yesterday? If you lived that long, you wouldn't remember anything you did in the previous YEAR. People who couldn't/wouldn't choose immortality would wither and die around you in what seems like seconds. Living to 150, maybe even 200, that probably wouldn't be so bad. But 10,000? A trillion? That's not even addressing the overcrowding and resource shortages that would inevitably occur. People may stop dieing, but they will never stop mating.

+Erik M. A 63 year-old man considers 1 year to be much less significant, as he has already experienced 63 years; what's 1 more? That has seem shown to be false. If that was true the elderly and children would experience 1 hour different, or a day. But they don't. TIme is only relative to gravity.

What your saying is that the human brain couldn't sustain it's normal functions as it aged. Immortality tech should fix that, even if it is an issue. Overcrowding would be an issue eventually. The discovery of immortality might prompt governments to explore space more and try and colonize other planets. Overcrowding could also be solved with other means. Genetic modification could make humans sterile. If people wanted to reverse it they could use genetic modification agents consisting of carrier viruses that'd edit the genes to produce sex cells again. You could do that with nanites too.

Learning another language is the best way to learn about the culture and history of other nations, far more so than any history class, that is, so long as you have a good teacher who is very knowledgeable in the subject. If a universal language is ever adopted, I actually do believe that a lot of the culture and history behind nations may be lost, which is an incredibly sad thing to think of. I don't understand how you can be against foreign language education. Computer translators will never be as good human translators, and they will likely always be inaccurate. Learning a new language leads to more opportunities and increased communication which leads to increased understanding, meaning (hopefully) less conflict. I will admit that many schools have an excess of foreign language classes, but that doesn't mean they should all be cut entirely. I have to say your stance on foreign language education is very close-minded and unlike you CGP.

I've been listening to the Hello Internet podcasts, and he's been talking about it for 2 or 3 episodes. @hayoungpark913610 жыл бұрын
Christine As a person coming from a non-English speaking country, I don't think Grey is hypocrite. By what you said, he doesn't consider the classes useful since kids don't remember them, and more importantly never use them. It's different with English. Just being fluent in English benefits you greatly in getting jobs, etc, and let's face it, it's the most "universal" language. Say you go to, let's say, the Great Wall of China. Although it's in a non-English speaking country, as it is a popular tourist destination in a developed country, it's logical (not saying it's "right") to expect to communicate in English there. In another language, not including Chinese, Not really. Oh, I'm not really agreeing on Grey's point, as I'm learning French now... But he kind of has a point to clinging on those beliefs. I'm trying to say that although other foreign languages may not be used in a man's lifetime, English will probably be encountered.
