A fascinating exchange between hard hitting questions and home run responses. Thank you for this.

I feel like most 19th century European war can be told through the conflict of France and Germany, the Franco Prussian war, Nepoleonic war and of course World War One and two. I would like to see a book on the life of these two countries.

Margaret MacMillian’s books, Paris 1919 and The War that Ended Peace, grow in importance as we muddle through international relations a hundred years later. Brexit, NATO weakening, and nationalizism are just three of the most recent movements, since this interview, that are driving allies apart.

Ms MacMillan again shows her breadth of knowledge and insight. Unfortunately the questioner is an idiot or perhaps is showing what he thinks of Americans with his less than interesting questions. What is a Kaiser ?? What is a Czar ?? Come on .. folks that come to listen to her are much more well versed than that .. it is a shame his questions were so sophomoric.

I was thinking that too... I was expecting him to ask "What is Europe?"

Who was to blame for the road to 1914, the WW1, Prof M Macmillan...? no dearth of targets for blame-game, Robert, the debate rages onn to date among serious historians, authirs, academicians, racounteurs embelleshing, exaggeratedly, amateur casual historiabs , so onn & so forth... I've already exhaustively penned down my pain stakingky researched account of the 1914 to 19q9 events in my books which i'd urge u strongly to read.... since u're a history buff... that's a luxury, only the highly privileged can afford u see Prof MM Alright, u tell me, for a change, who's to blame for the WW1...? ti begin with the supposedly cursed car, Graf and Stintz, Graf bros of Vienna - mfd sports car with open roof top, u know the number plate...Prof M M...? A 111 118.... do u read anything in it Robert...? i guess i do read something in the number plate of the supposedly ill fated sports car the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand, his Czech native ( apparently of lesser nobility!) Countess Sophie travelled on that fateful day of June 28, 1914...in Sarajevo.... The numerous tall tales of the spirts car, by raconteurs, exaggeratedly embellished, do read them carefully, Robert, for u'd surely find a few deep insights into those tall tales... Anyways, Prof MM, I've a different theory or a view, point.... U see, who/which, was the country, who gate crashed into the WW 1 at the fag end...? Mr W W ie Woodrow Wilson, who rode to the WH on a election propaganda promise to the Amerikan voters of "keeping Amerika out of the European war" once he was elekted, in the 1916 campaign... And once he was elected & inaugurated into WH in April 1917, what was the first thing he did...? rushing to Europe, plunging headlong into the WW1... to defuse, to bring it to a swify end ? or to register Amerika's attendance in the war, to claim their "fair-share" of war booty...? WW ie Woodrow Wilson was one of the most shady Amerikan presidents, pre 1945, Prof M M... True... his secret Jekyll island rendezvous.... birth of FED reserve....!!! Yet i do not get it as to why u claim of the previous century, ie 1814 to 1914 being peaceful & a calm Europe...? i said, "relatively"... Roberts.... although who'd know better...? off course who else but Prof M Macmillan...! yes... the entire century prior to 1914 was dotted with clashes, conflicts wars amongst the various European. countries, natiln - states, the unification of Italy, the forging of fragmented Prussia into, a unified Germany by Otto Von Bismarck in 1871.... the Crimean war in 1850z, the Serbian, Bosnian conflicts.... Ahh, the Serbia & Bosnia.... why did the Austro, - Hungarian empire wish to gobble up Bosnia...? That's the problem with u serious historians, academics Prof MM... even in the present times the expert commentators, studiously avoid, bringing up the implosion of Yugoslav, in early 90z - - post end of Marshall Tito, choosing to focus obsessively over the far east ie Russia - Ukraime war, going onn since 2014.... and this time has any country, European, US, Asia-Pacific bothered to join the war unlike a century ago in 1914...? No.... all they've been doing, for over 15 yrs now, is offer a running commentary from the sidelines, instead of rushing to the aid of either sides, to swiftly bring the conflict to an end, or to steer the warring countries to the negotiating table, peace talks.... "War'always been a big racket" Roberts... U've written another book on 1919 - Paris, too, Prof M M...? Yes... hv u talked at length of the most overlooked, ignored point of 1919...? the founding of the League of nations in January 19 20,. by the Paris peaceconference, that endee the world war 1... And the same was folded up & merged into the April 1946, est org, the UN....? April fool? by Woodrow Wilson, - - April 19 17 inaugurated president, who refused to be a member of the LoN...? anyways, what was the most significant event of 19 19...? the birth of I L O.... in October 19 19, by the treaty of Versailles... International labour Organisation...! and the hdqtrs located in? Genewa - Switzerland....!!! and the first Labour party founded in the year? 27 th February, 1900, England & Wales... 8 th May, 1901 - East Melbourne, Australia... ALP... now u tell me who, which country was responsible for the WW1 & also for not trying to end the war swiftly... Prof M M...?
