Wanna not what's cuter than a big cat playing with a bag of cat nip? A pride of lions playing in a field of live cat mint rolling around like they are all high. 40 years ago a friend of mine had a 40 acre farm and also was the manager at a zoo. He had a pride of lions that his family had kept for generations. He had planted an acre of cat mint and when the lions went to play out in the field they would roll around in the cat mint. The look on their faces was priceless.

It's kind of amazing how much domesticated cats are like the big cats in the wild. My house cats are enjoying their catnip this summer, but they sometimes get drunk and get into a slight bar room brawl....nothing major :)

Chris France I don't think that's true. Cats have to be several months old to react to catnip. Whether or not they do is genetic and doesn't change.

Honestly, it's a neat idea but I would rather ward off a predator with negative stimulus rather than positive. As much as I wouldn't want to harm an endangered (and awesome) animal like a mountain lion, I would think something like bear spray would the be most reliable way to get a mountain lion to back off, especially if it was already rushing you. A decent shot from a firearm could do it too, but then 1, that's a very difficult shot to pull off with limited time on a moving target whereas bear spray has a large area of effect, and 2, if you do kill it, then you're going to have a fairly long and potentially expensive talk with the game warden or maybe even the police depending on state (or province in Canada) law. Not saying I wouldn't defend myself or my family if I needed to, but I would like to try and avoid killing such an amazing creature unless I had no other way.

Yazmin Ortiz If you want to work with animals, study science. Biology, especially. And see if you can volunteer at a shelter or rescue for (small) cats. You can probably do that at ten, if your parents come; definitely by fourteen, as volunteer hours. Lots of careers working with animals--trainers, caretakers, handlers, vets and vet techs... look into them, see what you like.

What keeps us from having them as pets is the simple fact that we have seen so many many MANY big cats end up in horrible situations because people tried to make them into pets. Seeing the cats pay the price for human mistakes over and over is really sad. We want to end the cycle not keep it going.

idk about lions, but regular cannabis (THC-containing products) is straight-up toxic to both domestic cats and dogs. (some folks have had success with CBD-only for certain stuff, but the research is mostly "the plural of anecdote is still not data" at best.)

Well the answer is YES. The big cats behave just like all my little moggies. Has anyone examined the plant to find out just why cats adore it? I actually once grew it in my garden, I found a big old fat cat had dug it out, and was sleeping in its ROOTS. So maybe the root of the plant is more powerful. I once filled an old sock full of catnip for my cats to enjoy. I woke up to an unknown cat in my house , and a sock ripped open and cat nip everywhere I looked lol!

It has nothing to do with species. For any type of cat, something like 20% just don't react to catnip. It's a hereditary trait, and most lions have it too.
