This is a cab view of the JR Ome Line, which runs on the western edge of Tokyo. The Ome Line is a 37.2 km line between Tachikawa Station and Okutama Station, but this video covers the 11.6 km from the time the train departs from Haijima Station to Ome Station.
The Ome Line was opened in 1894 by the private railway Ome Railway between Tachikawa Station and Ome Station. At that time, a 762mm gauge was used, and the main purpose of the railway's construction was to transport limestone produced in the Okutama region.
Afterwards, the gauge was changed to 1067mm, and in April 1944, the line was acquired by the government and became part of the Japanese National Railways. (Japan National Railways was privatized in 1987 and became JR). The Japanese National Railways, which acquired the Ome Line, further extended the line, opening its current terminus at Okutama Station in July 1944.
Today's Ome Line has a modern appearance, and many U.S. Air Force-related facilities are built along the line from Tachikawa Station to Haijima Station, but from there onwards the line becomes more of an orthodox townscape. Even so, the mountain range of Okutama can be seen at the end of the line, giving it a unique scenery.
Beyond Ome, there are hills and rivers perfect for hiking. Many tourists ride this route on holidays. I will introduce the view of that section in my next work (however, the river is not reflected in the cab view (´∀`; )).
Ome Station, which appears at the end of the video, is a building that was used as the headquarters during the era of the private railway Ome Railway, and it is said that there was once a shopping street underground.
