The Wandering Warrior

Күн бұрын

The Traditional Chinese Martial Arts as we know it today comes from a context of a violent Confucian culture plunged into societal collapse. The late Qing dynasty was a turbulent time, with famines and floods, opium epidemic and foreign encroachment, mass banditry and open revolts. Therefore many civilians learned 武術 Wushu. A thriving economy of martial artists developed, many dueled on 擂臺 Leitai (raised platforms) to prove their skills.

Nice video man 😎👍 Delving into that period of time in the late Qing/early republican really helps contextualize the how and why of Chinese martial arts today. Keep up the good work

Absolutely, I believe people need to understand the context of the art to understand how it should operate

Good to see you posting on this. Your discussion of the village militias reminded me of Joe Escherick's book on the Boxer Rebellion.

This is a great video for those millions of Chinese who had moved out diring that time and their decendents have no clue how bad it was in China for almost a century from the foreign western nations that drugged China amd the internal rebellions till the japanese invasion of china and the massacres of chinese people while China was still on their knees trying to recover from the brutalities of western colonialism and then the civil war in China...Chinese people all over the world should realise how much their ancestors suffered and not be divided amonst other Chinese regardless of which ethnic group they are in, be it the Hakka, cantonese, manchu..han chinese or non han..that is what the current Chinese government is doing right, right now and consider all ethnic group as Chinese nationals regardless whether they are han or not..i mean even the manchus now are considered han chinese and they are all united.. god bless china and the chinese people..we must unite as one people again because the western powers are continuing to divide us and make us weak to keep the oriental race on their knees...this applies even to the japanese and south koreans as they are puppets used as a battering ram to keep the whole of eastern Asians people on their knees and weak...subjugated to the anglo saxon empire under the false guise of their fake democracy which their own people are being abused and subjugated...

@@Chance_Logan Baguamaster Cheng Tinghua, a disciple of Dong Haichuan, founder of Cheng style Bagua and also a shuai jiao champion, was murdered by German soldiers when the Eight Nation Alliance was ravaging Beijing. They were abusing people, he beat some of them up but was then shot to death while trying to escape.

However, isn’t it sad that now as China seems to be a strong power, people are on average weak and Kung fu/wushu is on decline. You can watch Kung fu on movie screen but they are not widely practised anymore in real life?

Well, it seems the average person and the government aren't as interested in their own martial heritage 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@the.wandering.warrior What are you talking about fam? There are more Chinese sanda fighters in MMA today than any other time. Jingliang Li, Xie Wei, and Song Yadong and many other are carrying forward the legacy of Chinese martial arts.
@the.wandering.warrior

@@johnl9361 I'm definitely talking about something different than you are. I'm talking about average Chinese people and their traditional martial arts in response to @einsam_aber_frei and not about sanda in the sport schools and the rise of Chinese fighters in MMA. I think that's great, I love seeing it, but I'm also able to recognize that's not the same as everyone in a village practicing martial arts together after work. Do you understand what I am saying? It's not so much that average Chinese people are engaged in their martial culture, it's more than there's a pathway for professional athletes to get good. It's not wrong but it's different than what I'm referring to. And Chinese aren't unique in this, the average Westerner isn't catch-wrestling, boxing and learning basic fencing as a part of masculine martial culture - yet there is a rise in MMA. Maybe things will change. More people are getting into their own martial heritage.

Isnt shuai jiao a wrestling style of wushu
@championboy4782
@championboy4782 5 ай бұрын
@@HYPMAN100 more accurate to say that shuai jiao is 'folk' wrestling in China. Shuai Jiao encompasses various styles of Chinese wrestling, and it's different depending on where and whom you learn it from. Some older teachers outright teach you different things as 'fundamentals' to suit your body type. Though generally, it is a very strong style to specialize in. Few martial arts have such universal use for both no-gi and jacket wrestling
