9/11 Stories: Will Jimeno - PAPD Survivor Of The Collapse

33 year old Port Authority police officer Will Jimeno and his supervisor, Sgt. John McLoughlin, were the ONLY two people who survived being buried under the collapsed twin towers of The World Trade Center. A 3rd Port Authority cop, Dominick Pezzulo, survived the collapse of the first tower but died, bleeding out, 2 feet away from Will, after the second tower collapsed on them. Their story was immortalized in the 2006 Oliver Stone movie “World Trade Center”, starring Nicolas Cage and Michael Pena. One of their rescuers, NYPD’er Scott Strauss (who is featured in another “9/11 Stories” segment) says what they experienced what 100 times worse than what you see in that film.
Will Jimeno came to the U.S. from Columbia with his family when he was just 2 years old. At just 6 years old he decided he wanted to be a police officer when he grew up. After graduating high school, and serving in the Navy, Will was sworn in as a Port Authority cop less than 9 months before 9/11. Married to his sweetheart, Allison, Jimeno was the proud dad of 4-year old Bianca. Allison was 7 months pregnant with their 2nd daughter. Will and Allison were proud owners of their first house, bought in Clifton, New Jersey 6 weeks before 9/11. On 9/11, Will says he was living the American dream. He literally skipped down the stairs of his new home that morning, so happy with his life.

Back in the early 2000’s i thought i was living the dream, got married, had good jobs, built our first home and the only thing missing was a child in our marriage. After testing we found out that it was me that had the issue, this day was the turning point in my life. So the wife and i got divorced, lost our new home and i had to move in with my parents in 2008. Well in 2010 i had a bad spinal injury that left my legs paralyzed until after surgeries and many years of therapy i am able to walk a little, I’m disabled now and then i lost my dad in 2012 to cancer and my mental health was spiraling down, i had many day’s of thinking about ending the mental and extreme physical pain i was experiencing but i hung in their and im still suffering to this day. The only thing that keeps me here is my mom and my sister because i have to help take care of them because they are in bad health as well. Its 2021 and I’m 48 and my life has not started over, I’m still living with my mom. You can do this, you have to stay mentally healthy for your daughter! You keep your head held high!!!

Bruce, with a lung condition, was not supposed to be in the towers, but he chose to go. The people who saved Will were asked several times to leave him due to the fire, but they chose to stay. How much better the world would be if we choose to do the harder thing, the kinder thing.

If my child died in that situation, knowing exactly how he suffered would be worse for me. It would haunt my every minute. I would prefer not to know the details. Some of those that lost someone that got no direct info imagine that somehow they got out injured and survived but due to trauma, have amnesia and will return one day. It's false hope, but it's hope nonetheless.

I’ve been listening to a bunch of these stories of survivors and I’ve found myself thinking about what the other survivors were doing and where they were at during the timeline of each new survivor story I hear. It really brings to life a city full of people experiencing this. And then fitting in my own experience watching this on TV. What an insane day. Thanks Will I needed that. I am a child abuse survivor and deal with PTSD. It's been 30+ years and still I get bitten by that darkness. I also deal with epilepsy, and my happiness now comes from being seizure free for 2+ years. I was having seizures so often that I couldn't live alone, cook, watch fireworks, or check out Christmas lights. Now as of August I live alone in a one bedroom, I cook, I take the bus. That darkness ate me alive while my seizures were an every day several times a day occurrence. The one thing that got me out of bed every day was my cat. Yup a cat. Now I have many days where I do more than just roll out of bed to feed her. I see some light at the end of my tunnel. ( I received a VNS implant, and it stopped my seizures along side my meds.)

WoW...for the past 20 years, when I saw the movie in the theater in the scene where Dom told them he was dying and took our his gun, I thought he was trying to end his own suffering and possibly be his way of making it "easier" for the others (which I would have completely understood in this circumstance), he was actually sending a signal in last ditch effort to try to get them all help, with his last breath.. God I hope they can forgive my ignorance and naivety. God bless those men.

When Will stopped his story to say: “if you are going through substance abuse or are in a dark place and thinking of giving up- think of all the people you’d be letting down, yourself and allll those other people….remember that you are loved”. That helped. This man is just constantly helping people, even in the middle of recounting a horrible, traumatic incident- he’s still stopping to think of others. Whether it’s by mentioning the full names and personalities of his lost colleagues, or sending messages to strangers, like the one above that helped me from across an ocean- this man is constantly thinking of others.

I came across the video and immediately clicked because I’ve known about Will’s story and his sergeant for years now. For the last 5 years ish, on the anniversary of 9/11 I watch their movie WTC. & every year I cry. I myself am a New Yorker & I was only 7 when it all happened so I’ve carried that pain with me. Michael Peña’s portrayal of Will made and still makes me cry like a baby. But this video was so needed and such a blessing to hear wise words of courage and hope to fight through the battles of life & look forward to each sunrise 🌅 Will reminds us how beautiful it is to be healthy and live. Hard to know whether that version was "Hollywood" or not, but according to Jimeno in this video, the officer who shot his gun shot it in the air to let people know they were there. I haven't seen the movie. I kind of overdosed for a while there from seeing that footage so many times and all of those documentaries, but maybe I'll try to watch it this weekend... I was working at Rockefeller Center at the time and had previously worked at the WTC, so needless to say, I will definitely NEVER FORGET!!!

I think we will all remember where and what we were doing at that exact moment. How proud his children must be of their father. My dad was a firefighter for 42 yrs - it ended his life at 63 so my children lost so very much with a granddad and it kills me that he didn't see his grandkids grow up or my young son. I have need my dad so much over these years without him but he was the bravest person I have ever met and the stories that I heard after his death have given me great comfort. I am so thankful that this wonderful man has seen his children grow up.

My dad was lucky to retire after 32 years, but he did not escape unscathed. His back, knees, and now Parkinsons disease, which is 30% more common in firefighters. He's the most amazing man I know, one who would have done exactly the same as Jimeno and gone in there knowing he very well may never come out. I'm sorry for your loss. I know I will be lost without my dad whenever his time comes, but he has instilled all things good inside me that I am passing on to my children, especially his sense of duty.

I will honestly take your words, and lessons of life, and survival with me until I take my last breath. My father committed suicide many years ago, and I often felt like a part of me went with him that day and it has taken me several years to finally start living again. My father was only 39 years old at the time of his death and I like you understand the importance of life. and how short, and precious it really is. I have been in sort of a dark place since Covid, and I was looking for some inspiration and there you were. You are a beacon of light in an often dark world, and you are a national treasure. Holy moly your story of resilience and positivity is so moving. I thank you for your bravery in your heroism that day and story of survival to now. I can relate to moving forward with PTSD. Circumstances are not even comparable, apples and oranges, but I was in a major car accident where my car was the one that flipped across 6 lanes of a major Southern California freeway. Fortunately, physically I was ok for the most part, but absolutely terrified. I also had to have the mindset of I'm not going to let fear win. I was terrified of driving, but 3 days after the accident, I got in my rental car, bruised up and banged up and drove over an hour in Los Angeles traffic to pick up my son, who is an Army soldier, from the airport for him to get married 3 days later. If my son can fight for our country I sure as hell was going to work through my fear of driving. I will say though it did take me a few years to get anwhere near that particular freeway without shaking. Everyday is a blessing and I don't take any day for granted. God bless you and your family. I've listened to his story many, many times, and it's still just as captivating as the first time. Not only is he a very smart and enlightened man, he's a good man. I'm so glad that he had the selflessness to share what he's been through and most importantly, his insights on how he dealt with his trauma. So valuable. Your story is amazing. I know it wasn't for you, I can't imagine what that must have been like going through that. But you are a hero and I'm so happy you came out of that awful day. My birthday is 9/11...I turned 10 that day. It doesn't matter how old you were you remember that day. I remember the exact moment my teacher and my class got the news. It was also the first time I saw my dad cry. He said to me what has this world come to? Why would someone do something so horrific. He's military or was, he got out when I was born. He wanted to go back in when 9/11 happened, but his age stopped him (and his back lol) Thank you for your service and thank you for telling your story. Your message of love is truly beautiful. I am so impressed with your patriotism, sense of service and gratitude. As a Marine and former deputy, when you mentioned the Marines showing up, I lost it. What he endured is so horrific, but lime he said," if we take a negitive experiance and change within ours selves, we can make the possitive to give back to multitudes and that's were the mirical happens. Wow Will! Absolutely most interesting story of all of them. Incredible! Only yesterday I was listening to Scott telling his, and then halfway through yours, I realised that you were the trapped person he was speaking of! You filled in all the missing parts. I thought they were digging in the pile. Now I know how you were where you were. I was a bit confused, as I heard nobody was found alive in the pile. You most certainly was saved so that you could tell this story! How you explained all the things is very important to all of us. You have learned a lot from your life! I must save this, and get a copy of your book, too. Thank you so much for your words of wisdom and help. I'm sure you must have amazing children and they have a really good dad. They will always be proud of you as they go through their lives. Now I must look for your sergeants story. I hope he survived. I have just spent the last week watching all the interviews with survivors, and still have more to go, but I doubt there will be any that hold more of messages than yours, somehow. I wish you good health and a happy life. I'm so glad that you made it!

I remember feeding my daughter a bottle when I watch these go down and I wondered what everybody was going through in there and wondered and just prayed for all of these souls and it just breaks my heart I remember I remember like it was yesterday actually

Wow, what an amazing testimony on so many levels. I hope I can get a copy of his book, although I live im France nI also have my own memories of that day, although I was in midtown and we were evacuated from Rockefeller Center... I had previously worked at the WTC and lived in NYC fir neatly 10 years, so I knew exactly what he was talking about when he described where he was at Port Authority and his description of the WTC...ow so the shipping will cost a fortune!!! I can't figure out what kind of knucklehead (10 of them so far) would give a thumbs down on this 🙄 Love this guy!!! God Bless him and his family!

I keep coming back to these incredible stories and one thing that continues to amaze me is the stories told about those that weren’t so lucky. We’re very fortunate to be able to hear of the heroics from not only survivors but some of the victims as well. I would imagine the families of these victims are blessed to be able to hear about their last moments and how heroic they were that day as well. Truly amazing, thank you for your service and bravery sir. Hope retirement is treating you and your family well.

These stories are so important! I recall that day vividly from the safety of my home in CA, though a lot of those lost on the planes were from my area. But the details and memories of what they saw and who they saw before they died, has got to be welcome knowledge for the families. I hope all who were in Manhattan and the Pentagon or even in a grounded plane tell what they recall from that day. It’s a history we must not forget.❤️🇺🇸💙
