Nirvana strategically using their fame to promote other artists that influenced them tells you so much about kurt and about Nirvana as a whole. Kurt - but all of them really - will always be respected by the underground for how strict their morality was when it came to how to approach being famous in the music industry. I believe that they never "sold out" and in utero is a perfect example of that.

‘Selling Out’ is making the album they want and expect you to make. Nirvana ALWAYS HAD CONTROL OVER EVERYTHING. They didn’t sell out in the least, and if any of you were smart, you’d recall the band realized that Sub Pop wasn’t able to support them as artists. They needed to sign to DGC.

I saw Nirvana at the Club Soda in Kalamazoo Michigan in the fall of 1989. Fantastic show forever etched in my mind! After their set Kurt walked through the empty dance floor of that small club and I stopped him to say how much I loved the show. There were maybe 20 people there. We talked for a bit and I sang him one of my songs. Unbelievable!!

I think his talents as a lyricist are underrated. It was probably difficult for him to be truly objective about his own work; ie., sometimes great artists can’t comprehend their own greatness. They did their own thing and made some of the most unique music you'll ever hear. And they signed record deals and got famous. People mean to say that they changed their sound to appease boring people. That’s so very often not true. Most bands that intend to please as many people as possible almost always tried to and probably just sucked at it in the beginning. “Selling out” is barely ever a thing. It’s happened but it’s a very naive way of trying to communicate a feeling of losing intimacy with a band due to them being well known. People really project their own shit onto everyone else. They seem to think that Kurt was this was naive, innocent, mentally dysfunctional baby who didn't understand a single thing about the world and was confused by the most basic of concepts. Kurt knew above anyone that Nirvana was a business and treated it exactly as that. He shopped around for the record company to make them the biggest in the world, made the right connections, played the game and was incredibly savvy. Goldberg made him as famous as he wanted, he made Goldberg money and he adored Goldberg like a father. That's not to say his music wasn't sincere also but that this myth that he was some poor, confused, frightened little boy who didn't want any of it is ridiculous. He lost interest as his addiction worsened but he did everything he could to be famous.

The mention of Stevie Nicks' Bella Donna album made me remember how much I loved the duet she did with Tom Petty (R.i.P.) "Draggin' My Heart Around" which was featured on that album!! I never owned a copy of that album, but my exposure to that song was via the video for it which was on major rotation back in M-TV's first year when they only had a relative handful of videos to play per-day and was a regular feature over the years to come. That collaboration featured amongst the best male and female vocalists in the mainstream Rock genre at that time, and their combined performances on that song were complimentary to, and well-matched with, one another -- both for authentically delivering the tone of the subject matter in the lyrics and for the musical arrangement around their vocal performances.

I have no problem believing that Kurt was just as ambitious as any other artist that makes it to that level of popularity, but I think he was for the right reasons which isn't something that can be said for most other celebrities imo. Vanity Fair basically killed Kurt. It was the straw that broke the camel's back. People tend to forget that Danny Goldberg worked for Led Zeppelin and was already rich by the time Nirvana came along. I think Kurt gave it his best shot (as anyone would do) and accidentally overshot his goals. He didn't realize how mega big they were going to be and couldn't handle all the trappings that came with the level of success Nirvana achieved.

Courtney Love hired a guy named Richard Allen Wrench (stage name) to kill Kurt. Courtney had herself arrested to clear her name but after being released and finding out nobody found the body she hired a technician to install a security system in the place Kurt's body was. The same man killed El Duce, a guy who was offered $50,000 to kill Kurt but turned it down. Courtneys a murdering psychopath no talent junkie. The problem with the case was it was deemed a suicide by the police who first arrived and not by the proper homicide unit which disturbed the scene; so an investigtion will never be re-opened. He probably wouldve quit music and pursued art/painting in some way, who knows, but he loved his daughter and being a Dad, he didn't kill himself. Period.

I grew up in the Seattle area. I saw Nirvana when they were playing battle of the bands at high schools. I'm a fan of Kurt's, of Nirvana, of all the "grunge" music that came out of my home town. Listening to Danny Goldberg compare Kurt and Courtney to John and Yoko makes me puke. Guys like Goldberg who swooped in to cash in on (and generate) the hype that swirled around Nirvana in 1991-1992 are nothing but corporate greed pigs of the highest order. The sad part was that everybody, even the most casual fan, much less those closest to Kurt, could see how TERRIBLE Courtney was, both as a human being in general, and as a "partner" for Kurt. Goldberg was at best an enabler of the disfunction that ultimately destroyed Kurt, all the while lining his pockets. While it is nice to laud Kurt's talent and artistic vision post mortum, and portray him as being "competitive", people like Danny Goldberg and Courtney Love seem to use such praises as a means to exculpate themselves from the tremendous harm they did to him at the time, and entirely avoid taking any responsibility for the truth, which is--> they were the very agents most directly responsible for his tragic, and preventable, suicide.

Blaming others for someone's suicide is extremely distasteful. No one is to blame. Kurt Cobain had a plethora of problems and didn't deal with them accordingly... sadly. 21:00 Bingo...this is thing that gets misremembered by most people. Pearl Jam was actually a more commercially successful band than Nirvana before Cobain died. By the time 1993 rolled around In Utero actually was not a huge album when it came out(it debuted well but fell off the charts quick)... Pearl Jam's Vs which came out a few weeks later was a massive success so Pearl Jam had 2 mega albums in a row whereas Nirvana had 1. It wasn't until Cobain's suicide that Nirvana obtained this next level success and all of their albums picked up a lot of sales after he died. Prior to Kurt's death Nevermind sold 5 million albums and In Utero sold 1 million. Pearl Jam on the other hand sold 6 million copies of Ten and 5 million copies of Vs. I'm only bringing this up because this part of the history gets confused as everyone thinks Nirvana was the biggest band during the grunge wave because of the entire "knocked Michael Jackson off the charts" which is an amazing thing but it's a false narrative if you try and measure who was actually bigger band and I'm a bigger Nirvana fan than Pearl Jam. Facts should be accurate. Yes, I always mention this fact myself, thanks for bringing that up. People always think Nirvana was gigantenormous when Kurt died - they weren't. Actually, their popularity was coasting a bit with "In Utero", even if they were still, of course, successful. Nirvana hit big with "Nevermind" but didn't tour the US with it. In the meantime, Pearl Jam was everywhere and Nirvana kind of lost momentum (which is probably, to an extent, what they wanted, even if Kurt was also paranoid about being broke again). It's not surprising in that, in my opinion, "Ten" is a very typical album of 70s classic rock in a way done in 1991 - it could appeal to a lot of people. I think "Nevermind" was actually more extreme than "Ten". The Pumpkins' "Siamese Dream" , that came out around the same time as "In Utero" and "Vs" was also a big seller in the US than "In Utero" at the time. That said, it's a US perspective. I'm french and Nirvana was the biggest band of the bunch in France when Kurt was alive, hands down. Pearl Jam only got to play a club in Paris when they toured for "Ten" - Nirvana played a 7000 seats venue, and they played well attended venues for the In Utero tour as well. Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden all played clubs in Paris when Nirvana was around. Actually, Soundgarden were playing a 1500 capacity parisian club when they were told that Kurt was dead. These bands enjoyed much more success locally after Kurt's death (as a new generation of teens got into Nirvana and "grunge"/alternative music). Of course, Soundgarden had opened for Guns n' Roses in Paris in 92 - but as I was saying, they were just opening up and most people there didn't know them yet! So, Nirvana was the only band of its kind that was big in France at the time - and of course it only grew post April 1994.

"In Utero" was a conscious move...Even "Incesticide" was also a low-key release that kept the audience fed as there was no new album recorded by late 92, but also a statement of "this is what we were/are" with more extreme tracks like "Beeswax" or "Hairspray Queen". I think about the facts that were left out of the first movie, and really look forward to the second one!!
