Are you planning a trip to Hanle from Pangong Tso via Chusul route or are you planning a trip to Hanle from Leh and wondering what are your route options?
Let's check some Route Details & Tips of these two routes to travel from Pangong Tso to Hanle via Chusul or Leh to Hanle
Route from Leh to Hanle by Road
This is the general route to Hanle that most people take to visit this ever beautiful place in Ladakh. You can reach in about 9 - 10 Hrs depending upon the number of breaks you take in between the journey. The route along with the distance between the subsequent places is as follows:
Leh - Karu (36 KMs) - Upshi (13 KMs) - Kumdok (19 KMs) - Kere (53 KMs) - Chumathang (34 KMs) - Mahe (22 KMs) - Nyoma (25 KMs) - Loma (22 KMs) - Hanle(51 KMs) = 275 KMs
You can cover Thiksey, Hemis, and Shey monasteries while going through this route if you haven’t covered them earlier while going to Pangong Tso. This route provides the best road conditions for all other routes.
So, if you are one of those who prefer a relaxing vacation and do not want to rush through places then, I will suggest making a three day trip to Hanle from Leh. Of course, I assume your body has been acclimatized properly by staying for a couple of nights in Leh and spending a couple of nights in Nubra Valley as well before attempting to sleep in the cold desert of Changthang at Hanle.
If you are short on time, then you can also exit towards Manali via Manali - Leh Highway via Hanle and then to Tso Moriri via this route only, but you need to ensure you have enough fuel to cover about 850 km without any fuel pump.
Route from Pangong Tso to Hanle via Chusul
There exist a direct route between Hanle - Pangong Tso as well and in most general cases, you will always be doing it from the direct route of Pangong Lake to Hanle via Chusul because you can exit Ladakh from Tso Moriri towards Manali - Leh Highway after visiting Hanle and Tso Moriri without coming back towards Leh.
Secondly, both Hanle and Tso Moriri are higher than Pangong Tso, so as per the acclimatization schedule, you should stay near Pangong Tso before spending the night at Hanle and Tso Moriri. However, all depends subject to the approval of permits for this route via Chusul.
Spangmik (Pangong Tso) - Man (9 KMs) - Merak (12 KMs)- Kakstet (4 KMs) - Chusul (24 KMs) - Tsaga La (33 KMs) - Tsaga Village (20 KMs) - Loma (23 KMs) - Hanle(51 KMs) = 176 KMs

You will be amazed to know Geology Students(my trek partners for last 5-6 years) from CARDIFF UNIVERSITY and BIRMINGHAM University are going through your articles and uploads for quite some time regarding their thesis work in Himalayas... you deserve a lot, i hope someday indians will recognise the work of people like you, SARVANA(india in motion). People here, mostly the motorheads can't think anything beyond the tarmacs....i wish someday u people will get the due credits... only thing i regret right now is.. why i didn't find you 2-3 years back.....i have been to ladakh 2 times in the crowded months of June-july & ended up traveling to more or less the same places.. I have read most of your articles and tbh it feels like all under one roof.. What i am going to ask will be little hectic for you still.... suppose you are having 10-12 days in ladakh in the month of March-April, you are traveling solo and would like to go for the public transport and a very basic village stays/self camping...., basically i wanna see ladakh in the winter months..... what places would you plan, what itinerary would u like to go with, which public transport will be the best.... ... please suggest me something which you could do if you were in my place.......i am in no hurry , u can take your time .....u better mail me at dieformanu2208@gmail.com. actually Dheeraj i asked u few days back (if you remember me) then i contacted a local guy from Darcha regarding the zanskar hike but later when i asked ,SARVANA (india in motion) for his opinion , he didn't find it promising to go there in those early days......some are suggesting goshan valley, Baltal etc. so please suggest me a customized trip...

Hi Dheeraj, cheers to you from a big fan of your travel videos. I have a query, I have contacted 2-3 taxi owners/drivers in Leh from the list which your channel posted. All of them says that route from Pangong to Hanle is still closed due to tensions between India and China and it is not allowed to visit Hanle at the moment. Is it true?
@discoverwithdheeraj
@discoverwithdheeraj 3 жыл бұрын
The route via Chusul is closed. You can travel to Hanle from Chumathang Mahe Nyoma route but only day visit is allowed. Night stay permission is hit or miss, sometimes given and mostly not.

As of the last updates couple of weeks back, Chusul permit is not yet allowed and they are not allowing the tourists on that route. I did hear that the route via Tangtse - Earath - Kaksang La may be allowed though. But you need to confirm from DC office only and lot will depend upon your date of travel. I will update it in my next monthly update video too.

Can you please advice on fuel. We are planning for Leh trip in May 2022. So we are planning to go on Hunder - Pangong - Hanle - Tso Moriri - Keylong. Our fuel station distance is almost 900kms from Hunder to Keylong can you please advice on this.
@discoverwithdheeraj
@discoverwithdheeraj 2 жыл бұрын
I think I replied you on Instagram. There are two possibilities only 1. You get fuel in some villages like Tangtse, Chusul, Hanle, Nyoma, Korzok, Chumathang, Sarchu 2. You carry spare fuel to make sure you at least have until Tso Moriri and then from Tso Moriri you should have enough left to go back to Karu petrol pump about 190kms in case option 1 does not work. So nutshell, you have to carry some spare fuel for sure. Start asking or topping fuel at Tangtse village.

Hanle as Sonam Guest House or Padma Guest House for stay. However, this year stay in mostly not allowed in Hanle and only day visits are being allowed. Secondly the direct route from Pangong Tso to Hanle via Chusul is closed for civilians and tourists are not allowed beyond Man - Merak checkposts.

@discoverwithdheeraj
@discoverwithdheeraj Жыл бұрын
Bhagwat bhai there is a new petrol pump now at Tangtse which is just 34 kms before Pangong Lake. If going to Tso MOriri after Hanle, you need to manage about 700 km without petrol pump on this route after Tangtse. If you go to Umling La, then add about 170 km more.

It is monsoon time in general up there in North and at some parts of Manali - Leh Highway (like before Baralacha La) and Srinagar - Leh Highway (like before Kargil) you might need to face monsoon hassles but once you get closer to Ladakh, then Ladakh being rain shadow region is least affected by monsoon rains. Landslides or slush or road blocks are pretty common in the month of monsoons but these landslides are cleared in a day or two unless there is a very major one. Having said that, rains does reach Ladakh nowadays but in general, it is overcast days or in form of light drizzles. I will suggest going through: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZW2q42fd8dmf8U
