Yes. 3D art is everything. Photography, video, science, art and so much more. Whenever i do a big project I research the topic a ton. To learn as much as I can about what I'm going to make. I went to school for video production at The Art Institute and took Photography. I use that knowledge all the time in 3D.

Thanks for the video. I agree 100% with what you said when talking about not having references. When i started 3d, I thought, its like cheating art. It's true that you are doing all of it 3d, but it's also true that 3d software does a lot of the heavy lifting. But when you dont have a reference? It's really hard. I have 0 art skills outside of the 3d pipeline, and the entire reason i clicked on this video is that I've hit a wall. Not only is my 3d skills not as good as i thought, but now im trying to pull together my own designs from scratch, and it's a struggle. Really rude wake-up call, honestly. i was questioning if i should refine my 3d skills or go learn more art fundamentals. I've always thought that learning to sketch would be insanely helpful for planning and quick iterations. Guess it's time to get a sketchbook.

The biggest regret I ever have as an Aspiring 3D Game Character Artist Is not studying Art Fundamentals in 2020 when I finally started to model my very first 3D model in September 2019 following a Blender 2.8 tutorial. I really neglected everything about art when whatever I was doing was Indeed Art which required It's fundamentals. Now I'm going back to the basics and learning more and more about art fundamentals and It really has improved my 3D work. Please, to any 3D artist, LEARN the art fundamentals, at least spend a year, then start 3D modeling, and keep learning art fundamentals on the Daily, You will forever going to set yourself up for success.

I saw someone asking on reddit a couple days ago how their 2D skills could help them in 3D. I told them that as long as they have good fundamentals in 2D you've already got 3D down, you just have to know how to pivot over
