I have great respect for Dr. Israr Ahmed, but I disagree with him on one point. He once advocated for Islamic democracy, using the example of choosing a drink among friends, where he likened it to a horse tied to a post, allowing limited movement within Islamic boundaries. My concern with this analogy is that Islam's principles are not continuous within a circle; instead, Islam is discrete. This means Allah has provided specific ways (maamlaat) for us to follow. For example, Islam allows only five types of partnership contracts; anything beyond these is considered Haram. Similarly, in matters like Nikkah, there are specific Islamic ways, and deviations are not accepted. For instance, if someone were to take seven rounds around fire and recite the Nikkah Khutba, it would not be considered a valid Nikkah, as this deviates from the prescribed way. Yet, when it comes to governance, we often prefer Western democracy over the system chosen by the Messenger of Allah, which is based on divine guidance. While Dr. Israr's example of choosing a drink is applicable in small, personal settings, it cannot be directly applied to state-level governance.
